"Proud of the FBU and PaulEmbery for ensuring that we did not vote to support the GRA Self ID resolution at the TUC today. The FBU cares and listens to its female members"

I can’t be the only left wing feminist who no longer feels welcome in her party or her union? Where do we go?

NothingOnTellyAgain · 11/09/2018 16:27

"Never trusted them anyroads. Run by men for men"

This.

Trade unions have always been about men workers.

Oxfordterfarama · 11/09/2018 16:27

Has UCU been asked to comment on what’s happening to academics? Genuine question.

NameChangedAgain18 · 11/09/2018 16:24

Ever since my former line manager dumped massive workloads on me as the only junior member of staff. He was also my union rep.

I've also been in a position where my Head of Department was the department's union rep. The university tried to get him to step down from the union role but he refused. It seems UCU didn't have a problem with the obvious conflict of interest.

I note also that UCU has had precisely nothing to say about ongoing freedom of speech issues and the now widely-reported harassment and slurring of feminist academics.

RiverTam · 11/09/2018 16:23

Does anyone know (or know how to find out, I’m not on Twitter) if the NUJ abstained?

2BorNot2Bvocal · 11/09/2018 16:22

Unanimous - does this mean the prison officers association voted in favour of self-ID? They seem to be affiliated to the TUC?

KataraJean · 11/09/2018 16:18

I am already out of the UCU, and I won’t be re-joining. Ever since my former line manager dumped massive workloads on me as the only junior member of staff. He was also my union rep.
I also do not support calling staff out on a 15 day strike, as the leader of the UCU did, when she is not an academic herself and therefore still being paid.
How would a UCU member fight any disciplinary action for exercising freedom of speech on women’s rights if the UCU supports self-ID? Ditto any workplace actually, but academics are supposed to be thought-leaders.

DanaBarrett · 11/09/2018 16:16

We need a 'mumsnet party'. I've been thinking about it for quite some time now. I reckon MN is a force to be reckoned with and could definitely find a way to become even more influential than it is.

R0wantrees · 11/09/2018 16:16

So, the NEU voted for this, but Kiri Tunks is the President of the NEU. confused
Are the majority of teachers Women?

I suspect most don't know about it.

I'm not in a union but surely this is an AIBU thread?

Appalling. This it too big an issue to be nodded through on the advice of one committee. Just like Brexit. Thanks again to our lefty woke bros and their handmaidens.

arranfan · 11/09/2018 16:11

Trade unions policies on trans self id have been designed exclusively by their LGBT committees, without proper engagement of wider membership, or even the womens committees.

What is organisational governance like if policies emerging from committees don't have to be put out for challenge and revision by other interested parties?

The strategy of leaving policy in the hands of committees is what I am worried about with the Women's Equality Party if they don't adopt the principles of procedural justice.

Oxfordterfarama · 11/09/2018 16:06

I’m also out of UCU if they voted for this. They’ve asked us about supporting a new vote on Brexit, why not on the GRA? Bastards.

Pilgrim Tucker:

"Trade unions policies on trans self id have been designed exclusively by their LGBT committees, without proper engagement of wider membership, or even the womens committees. Explains the vote at TUC today. (Apparently the cracks in this are beginning to show behind the scenes..)"

I swear, every day I think less 'sinister' than 'Jesus Christ the people running the country seriously are this thick !!!!'

Knicknackpaddyflak · 11/09/2018 15:51

So basically a whole group of stunning and brave sob stories were told, editing out all but that agenda and that view point, and people were immediately asked to vote.

Not surprising they got a unanimous, unthinking, sentimental gesture of support then.

Ridiculous one sidedness. Particularly considering the TRA lobby are petrified of allowing any GC voice to speak (because they have an effect) while GC voices are delighted for as many TRAs to speak as possible alongside them - largely because they usually illustrate precisely what GC people need to point out as a Fucking Great Huge Problem With This Shiny Happy People Illusion.

Predictable response: a lot of the membership will be livid, they'll realise they made a major mistake, they wont be able to back track because of public embarrassment and they will look like idiots. Alongside the Green Party and the NSPCC who have tripped neatly down this black hole. You'd think people would start to catch on.

VickyEadie · 11/09/2018 15:51

It's absurd that a few months ago we were celebrating 100 years since women got the vote and now it's like "OK ladies, we humoured you for 100 years, but you've had your fun now".

I see it as a bit more sinister than that. More like "Time for you to learn that we're in charge and you're going to really regret thinking you had any rights at all, much less the right to safety..."

A century on, and we need Women's Social & Political Union again

Ereshkigal · 11/09/2018 15:37

You're right. We need an active women's union.

The way it's going we're going to have to form an entire parallel infrastructure.

Ereshkigal · 11/09/2018 15:36

Agree that the unions are a huge boys club.

littlbrowndog · 11/09/2018 15:35

LangCleg · 11/09/2018 15:32

We need a new social and political union of our own. None of these fuckers represent us

As Lisa Muggeridge says, the public sector unions stopped representing working class, low paid and public sector women long since. All in the service of triangulating on Labour Party policy. This is just the last in a long line of betrayals.

You're right. We need an active women's union.
