Lucy Masood:
"Proud of the FBU and PaulEmbery for ensuring that we did not vote to support the GRA Self ID resolution at the TUC today. The FBU cares and listens to its female members"

List is here. It's not just teaching, it's probably all of them. www.tuc.org.uk/unions

arranfan · 11/09/2018 19:12

Can anyone point to a list of which unions are involved? Was it just education unions?

Can't point at a list as yet.

Looks like Unison spoke/voted in favour:

This may be a daft question. But if it's education unions, how will that affect schools? Thinking about things like school trips, PE lessons etc.

Turph · 11/09/2018 19:11

very, very few men don't keep their cocks
Typo?

WarmWishes · 11/09/2018 19:01

If you are in a union you will know you haven't been consulted on this. As Pilgrim Tucker says the vast majority left it to lgbt committees to decide. Women weren't centred at all.

This is a big deal for so many women who will not be able to seek out union support if they have concerns over male sexed bodies sharing changing rooms, accommodation and all the usual. We won't be able to access their help if the GRA reform goes through.

So it could potentially exclude women from diverse cultural backgrounds from work when many already face significant barriers. Not to mention women who have experienced trauma and obviously women who simply do not want to share intimate facilities because they just don't want to.

I feel very angry. The unions apart from FBU have casually handed away our rights without any real consideration. It seems they have either accepted that TWAW or are too cowardly to speak out in this toxic climate or just don't take safeguarding seriously and are too ill informed to realise how very, very few men don't keep their cocks.

If you are in a union please, please do complain.

Thank you to the FBU who have abstained with a view to consulting with women. Obviously I would have preferred 'oppose' but I think right now, it was pretty brave.

ThefusilliJerry · 11/09/2018 18:50

I think the issue got traction among conservatives who saw it as akin to gay marriage - a quick win to show were not bigoted wankers anymore.
It’s now getting a bit of closer examination. Personally I think if a load of labour voters in marginal seats (you know who you are) were to email the right people indicating they’d switch from labour if the tories decide this in the right way that might concentrate some important minds.
My seat has a Tory majority of 26000 so I have no leverage with any of the fuckers

Xiaoxiong · 11/09/2018 18:35

DH is a member of ATL which is now part of NEU and said he had no idea that this was happening. How does this stuff usually go? Don't members get consulted?

Acopyofacopy · 11/09/2018 18:32

Haven’t rtft - I am a member of NEU and most certainly did not know about this.
How/where can I voice my objection?

theOtherPamAyres · 11/09/2018 18:27

The TUC will contribute to the consultation on the Gender Act. They will represent the views of their members.

How does one go about saying "not in my name"?

BettyDuMonde · 11/09/2018 18:26

Fusilli, this is a cross party issue, so don’t be afraid to bring a Tory perspective to the discussion.

Tories have the older, boys club connected transwomen, the left have the young, internet addled MRA types.

Procrastinator1 · 11/09/2018 18:08

Could women threaten to withhold their subs until this is reviewed, especially if women’s committees, if any, had no input.

Oxfordterfarama · 11/09/2018 17:55

Maybe fuslii but this mad law is being championed by the Tories!

I'll take some to think things over as can't imagine not being in a union. Always have been and believe in them. It might be worth leaving and re-joining if they change their policy on this.

VickyEadie · 11/09/2018 17:49

We support the right of all women (including trans women) to safe spaces and the continuation of monitoring that can help identify discrimination against women and men.

It's like the Karen White case wasn't all over the press last week.

ThefusilliJerry · 11/09/2018 17:34

I realise that my Tory voter’s cynicism may not be altogether welcome in this discussion but I do wonder whether TUC support for self Id is perhaps helpful. Outside confirmed left wing circles - and god knows they lost the plot on this long ago - the TUC is not generally regarded as a massively credible organisation. Indeed for many people to tell them the trade unions support something is often a reason for them to regard it with suspicion.
I like to look for silver linings. But I see this is awful and demoralising for female members.

ZuttZeVootEeVro · 11/09/2018 17:33

I feel that the TUC, oddly, does not understand the conflicts with the Equality Act 2010.

I think you are being generous. I think there are people within the TUC who understand full well, but want to remove sex as a protect characteristic and sex segregation. I can only speculate what their motives are.

BettyDuMonde · 11/09/2018 17:28

I heard this motion being described as woolly and pointless and not worth fighting over at this stage.

Glad FBU abstained, single sex changing facilities are vital for people who have to shower and change in the workplace.

Lucy Masoud is gonna be TRA public enemy number 1 today so send her some solidarity, if you can!

arranfan · 11/09/2018 17:22

Left Foot Forward on the TUC vote (brief): The TUC has just pledged to campaign on trans-friendly changes to Gender Recognition Act:
A motion pushing for a "simplified, free, statutory gender-recognition process based on self-declaration" was passed nem con.

leftfootforward.org/2018/09/the-tuc-has-just-committed-itself-to-campaign-on-trans-friendly-changes-to-gender-recognition-act/

pp. 31-32, motion 41

Congress notes the announcement on 3 July by the government that it will, finally,
be holding a consultation on changes to the Gender Recognition Act (GRA) 2004.
As trade unionists we support trans workers rights, and as champions of equality we welcome the increased visibility and empowerment of transgendered and non- binary people in our society.
Congress calls on the government to take note of global best practice on gender recognition and to change the current processes for gender recognition that are lengthy, intrusive, humiliating and not fit for purpose.
Congress calls on the General Council to campaign for a simplified, free, statutory gender-recognition process based on self-declaration and to support rights for gender non-binary people at work and in wider society.
Congress welcomes the government’s commitment that the provisions in the Equality Act 2010 will remain. We support the right of all women (including trans women) to safe spaces and the continuation of monitoring that can help identify discrimination against women and men.
Congress looks forward to the introduction of a social rather than medical model of gender recognition that will help challenge repressive gender stereotypes in the workplace and in society.

GulagMilkMonitor · 11/09/2018 17:15

Is there a procedure for this being over turned?

GenderApostate · 11/09/2018 17:14

I read the NEU magazine as it still comes here instead of my teacher DD’s address. Terrifying to think a teaching union has decided that the rights of Girls aren’t important.

silentcrow · 11/09/2018 17:07

I suspect most don't know about it.

This NEU member certainly didn't, and I suspect I'm one of the few that actually reads the magazine. Bear in mind NEU covers the old ATL now as well so that's a LOT of people knowing nothing.

Wanderabout · 11/09/2018 17:03

Or at least that is how I interpreted the Pilgrim Tucker tweet!

Wanderabout · 11/09/2018 17:02

WPUK are on twitter arguing people should stay and fight.

Pilgrim Tucker has also tweeted she thinks this is something not thought through and that can and will be changed.

GulagMilkMonitor · 11/09/2018 16:56

You're right. We need an active women's union

I’m up for this.
I’m a member of a union that I can’t imagine ever leaving but would welcome a serious union for women.

NameChangedAgain18 · 11/09/2018 16:33

Oxfordterfarama - I've seen academics tweeting UCU to ask them to come out in support of academic freedom / feminist academics, but radio silence so far.
