Attack on Fair Play for Women in the Indie

I'm non-binary and I was approached by an anti-trans campaigner on the street. This is what I learnt.

There are too many highlights (sarcasm) to mention. Lies too. The comment section is a bit of a treasure trove too.

The Independent was the only national not to apologize for wrongly claiming last November that FPFW lied about the number of transwomen in prison for sex offences.

Any chance the Independent is trying for another bite at the cherry? Surely not.

I couldn’t help it. I commented a few times. Especially with one person who was incredulous that someone would trust the bbc (who fact checked the FPFW study) over Yaz who apparently has a hotline to the MOJ.

nauticant · 11/09/2018 15:58

Years back I wrote to the editor of The Independent telling him that an article of apparent truth written by one of his journalists was an urban myth. I wrote that if this kind of stuff was going to appear and go uncorrected that I wouldn't read the paper. His reply was that he didn't much care.

IfNotNowThenWhen1 · 11/09/2018 15:07

The fear of not being addressed by the correct pronoun consumes my every waking moment.
It's EXACTLY like Adrian Mole Grin
Oh I miss Sue Townsend.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 11/09/2018 14:37

Someone's started another thread on this, describing the Indie peace as a "really thoughtful article".

How ironic! That's EXACTLY how women feel about women only spaces

I was just reading an article by Jane Fae written at the time of Tara Hudson's imprisonment and was struck by a similar sense of irony.

"But the guidelines go on: where there is no GRC, there are many factors to take into account. Identity. Steps taken. Risk to the prisoner. To other prisoners. All of which are meant to be addressed before the guilty party arrives at prison.

speaking of Tara, "In the general [male] prison population she is at immediate risk of assault, of rape"

www.newstatesman.com/politics/uk/2015/10/why-has-trans-woman-tara-hudson-been-sent-all-male-prison

So if we consider the four women who have been assaulted by a male, placed in female estate. Someone who has a 20 year offending history of violent sexual assaults against women and children. This could be re-written to centre them, the vulnerable female prisoners.

Except those speaking up for women in female estate are smeared by TELI and have little access to the media in comparison with Jane Fae.

Jane Fae (Independent Journalist) was a speaker at TELI's inaugural conference.

"Our inaugural conference last November launched TELI and took the form of a series of expert panels discussions on trans rights covering healthcare, justice and the impact of exclusionary provision, education and international protection. It was a very successful conference, enabling a forum for activists and lawyers to discuss how to progress the rights of the trans community."

our own spaces, curated and controlled by us, we can feel safe and comfortable, we can talk openly about things that we often wouldn’t be able to, like trans sex, we can let loose and smile and feel supported, and we can also discuss the most difficult parts of existing with people who get it and will show us nothing but kindness

How ironic! That's EXACTLY how women feel about women only spaces Confused

Ekphrasis · 11/09/2018 12:24

What strikes me about this piece is that the author values the importance of a 'safe trans space' to discuss matters important to them.

This is all WPUK and FairPlay for women want to discuss and protect for women.

This is the Twitter exchange between Owl and Andrew Gilligan about the FP4W statistics which were reported by THe Times (worth reading)
November 2017

from Erishkigal's comment on thread:

Also re IPSO judgement (complaint not upheld) which was about the Times article quoting FP4W statistics:

Andrew Gilligan comment, Zoe O'Connell (LibDem councillor) also made "equally stupid" IPSO complaint against him (reference also to the dismissed complaint made by O'Connell about David Davies hosting the 'We Need to Talk' Westminster meeting)

I actually wrote to the independent 2 weeks ago about the fact that they did not update their article which claimed FPFW were lying and which was later proven to be true by an FOI and was widely reported in other media. This is what they got back to me with

"Thank you for contacting The Independent. We are always pleased to hear from our readers, whether feedback is positive or negative.

We are currently in correspondence with Nicola Williams about this matter, and hope that the matter will be resolved shortly.

Thank you for taking the time to get in touch,

With kind regards"

Its been months since the FOI was released, its pretty poor journalism to not even add a postscript to the article or print a retraction in that amount of time.

Ereshkigal · 11/09/2018 12:03

Nic Williams got them to print a disclaimer on that stupid Owl piece that Owl's claims were under legal dispute.

Stickerladiesoftheworldunite · 11/09/2018 11:57

Thanks R0wan. I might contact the NUJ in that case. It's not honestly conveyed, accurate or fair.

In fact it's deliberately obtuse.

R0wantrees · 11/09/2018 11:42

When I said I'd be taking my complaint to the IPSO she took great pleasure in saying that the Independent is self regulating!

Hmm

there are though still standards set by the NUJ:
(extract)
"A journalist:

At all times upholds and defends the principle of media freedom, the right of freedom of expression and the right of the public to be informed.

Strives to ensure that information disseminated is honestly conveyed, accurate and fair.

Does her/his utmost to correct harmful inaccuracies.

Differentiates between fact and opinion."

R0wantrees · 11/09/2018 11:39

Datun I'm fairly confident that similar observations of this journalist's work were made of their previous pieces.

The Indipendent 'Voices' or 'Opinion' pieces have featured many prominant TRAs as well as heavily biased and factually 'lacking' comments.

Stickerladiesoftheworldunite · 11/09/2018 11:35

**This is what The Independent had to say about the article mentionef upthread (Get the L out at Pride) when I complained about misgendering the women as 'cis women'

'we do not consider "cisgender" to be derogatory, but rather simply a description of people who identify with the sex they were assigned at birth.'

There were numerous emails and the editor in question seemed to enjoy using cis in their replies.**

I believe that news editor, Elizabeth Cobbe, previously worked at the PCC. When I said I'd be taking my complaint to the IPSO she took great pleasure in saying that the Independent is self regulating!

Datun · 11/09/2018 11:23

That article is deceitful. From start to finish.

It's all childish, illogical nonsense, but claiming the MoJ denied FPFW's claims in a phone call? When they did the opposite.

I hope FPFW sue. But also the MoJ could take issue as well.

BarbieBrightSide · 11/09/2018 11:18

This stood out for me:

But what does talking to each other actually look like? When trans people have our own spaces, curated and controlled by us, we can feel safe and comfortable, we can talk openly about things that we often wouldn’t be able to, like trans sex, we can let loose and smile and feel supported, and we can also discuss the most difficult parts of existing with people who get it and will show us nothing but kindness

So if trans people feel safe and supported in their own spaces, why on earth are they campaigning so hard to get into women's spaces, where they DON'T feel welcomed? Surely the most sensible and productive solution would be to campaign for a third space for those members of the population who are transgender?

(BTW I have lost hours reading threads on this board and I do realize that this is not actually what is wanted by the most aggressive of the campaigners)

hackmum yes, sadly you are right, Dawn Butler probably would say something so trite.

R0wantrees · 11/09/2018 10:57

May 2018 Dawn Butlers speech in House of Commons during special session on homophobia, transphobia, biphobia she referred to a social platform that was calling for 'new section 28'

Important to note that she didn't name it, but a false allegation was originally made against Mumsnet by a MN intern (re data breach) and has also been repeated by a number of prominant TRAs, including those with political influence.

I don't think Butler is a deep thinker, to be fair

8/9/2018 Dawn Butler (Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities) & TELI:

twitter.com/UKTELI/status/1038468818492895232

cf the many issues affecting women raised at WEP conference that weekend and the breaking news that the perpetrator of attacks on 4 vulnerable female prisoners had a long violent offending history against women and children. Did Dawn Butler comment?

*I don't believe for a moment even Dawn Butler would say anything so trite as 'it's ok for other people to have their equal rights and their human rights'."

TELI have had a great deal of influence... despite their spelling!

RogerAllamsFangirl · 11/09/2018 08:20

If that's an example of TELI "lituracy", I'm glad they're not representing me.
