BISH - "proudly supported by....."

As @R0wantree linked to on the thread on crossing out 'gender' for 'sex' on school forms, but this deserves its own thread.

Take a look at 'BISH' website for teens.

www.bishuk.com/about-you/whats-your-gender/

Has a helpful diagram. People called 'he' and who look masculine tend to be tough, active and independent. People called 'she' and who look feminine tend to be soft, emotional and passive.

He goes into schools and youth clubs and gives training to teachers on sex and relationship education with this shit! bishtraining.com/

"Our genitals are on a spectrum in terms of: how much erectile tissue sticks out (clitorises and dicks and inbetween); where the prostate is; where the wee hole is; whether the gonads are inside or outside; vagina size. Many people are in the middle of this spectrum with how their bodies are configured."

WTAF? There is a spectrum as to where the prostate is? that makes just as much sense as saying there is a spectrum as to where the uterus is between males and females ! Confused

"Currently I’m heavily involved in the DO … project. This is a campaign to make great sex and relationships education happen in schools." www.dosreforschools.com/

BISH and the DO SRE FOR SCHOOLS project are both sponsored by Durex and DO involves serious people who know about biology like the Family Planning Association, Brook and the National Association of Headteachers.

....I hope they were just not paying attention. I think we could bring it to the attention of their twitter accounts that they are supporting the promotion of sexism and absolute biological nonsense into schools.

teh link contains what I would see as manipulative:

"I mean, if you want to be this basic then by all means be basic (don’t be basic). But please don’t tell other people that this is how they should think about their gender too."

Info like this should be accuarte and non judgemental. This website is the opposite.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 07/09/2018 10:56

and they wrote a whole article about how great it is (there's a thread on here I'm sure) but I can't access it since I switched the router child settings up to max :D

NothingOnTellyAgain · 07/09/2018 10:56

Twitter from Paris:

"Street harassment is an important issue. Yet many women enjoy some catcalls. Why does your feminism say those women are not allowed a voice?"

NothingOnTellyAgain · 07/09/2018 10:55

Not read the fucking thread but wanted to post

consent thing has "activists like Paris Lees."???????

Isn't that the one that says street harrassment is fantastic and any girls or women who don't like it are miserable prudes who are trying to spoil everyone's fun?

WOW they can FUCK OFF

IfNotNowThenWhen1 · 07/09/2018 10:46

Ohmyfuckinggod. It gets worse! He's actually (and in a very wheedling way) asking for cash to assist with spreading his lies and grooming!
Oi, mate. Some of us run our businesses ourselves, without, yanno, begging strangers for money.
And trying to get people to link to his site from reputable websites.. and the fact that he has to ask if you work "in porn" don't do this as it may look dodgy. .well "dur" as DS would say.
This turnip should be on some kind of register.
And, the fucking Wellcome Trust? The same Wellcome trust that funds scientific research? I fucking hope not!
I need to go do some work as I don't have a panhandling blog to fall back on..
Tosser.

How DARE this fruitloop tell children to draw porn ( expecting them to view it first??) or think about wether or not they might like anal sex?

This is much more effectively put than the post I was drafting.

The guide is overly invested in teenagers "thinking" about which sex they'd like

So instead of having the kind of sex you think you should have, try to think about the kind of sex you might actually want
Masturbating in front of someone
Having anal sex (with a penis, fingers or toys)
Biting
Think of your own too. Make a list of all the things you can do when you're not in the same room, together with clothes on, just underwear on, totally naked. What might you like?

So imagine what good first time sex might be like for you.

So just like people like to be touched in different ways people also respond in different ways when they are being touched. First of all think about this for when you are touching yourself. Look at the previous page [features list with anus (inside), vulva lips, breast etc etc] and think about every part of your body.

seafret · 07/09/2018 10:05

This seems to be the endgame of the trans attempts to appropriate intersex conditions - pretend that they're so common that any time you pull someone's pants down what you find is as likely to be a surprise as it is to be what you expected, so why would you think you have preferences?

Totally AAK. Grooming. Conditioning. Brainwashing. How is this not seen as conversion therapy? It is just pre-emptive, rather than reactionary. Chilling.

Justin doesn't appear to be finding the career of a Sex Educator to be all that lucrative.

He has plans though:
'Can You Help BISH?'

Promote online
I already get a lot of visitors per year and the vast majority of those are via google search, which means that for a few search terms BISH is at the top or near the top of the search results. Mostly search engines like well written and relevant blog posts, but they also like to triangulate the quality of the website by looking at who links to it. This is where you can help!

If you can link to BISH from your website that would be awesome. It seems that the best links for would be from government or academic institution websites, so if you can link for one of those that would be especially good. In particular if you could link to your favourite posts in the love, or about you section that would be awesome because I think those sections could do with a boost (and there is a lot of crap advice online about these I would like to counter).

From what I’ve learnt reading about Search Engine Optimisation, I may not benefit from being linked to from porn sites so if you work in porn maybe could you link from your social media instead?" (continues)

Funding
What I hope to do with all of your help here is to demonstrate how worthwhile a website like this is so that I can attract more funding (either from Durex or an additional source, like Wellcome Trust or someone similar). I have enough funding to do what I do (as a part-time job), but not enough to expand it, or promote it, or to pay for writers, or to pay for social media folk, or to create a moderated community like at The Mix or Scarleteen. The dream is to turn it into a charity or social enterprise.

So if you can help me find additional funding please can you get in touch? There must be some kind of funding available for an action research project or some such, but because I’m busy doing this I don’t know about it. If you’re an individual feeling a bit flush and fancy chucking me a few pounds to pay for young people to have free copies of the Activity Book, or to pay for posters, or just to buy me a pint that would be lovely too (but honestly this is not the main thing I want to come out of this blog post).

Thanks So Much
If you can do any of these things for me that would be really great. This has been really hard for me to do because I don’t like asking for help (fragile masculinity), but one of my main difficulties is advocating for my own stuff and what I really need is some help doing that. So even if you could just pick a post on here that you think is great and just share it with someone you like that would be awesome."

Hunny

I can't believe he blocked you either! You made a perfectly reasonable, polite point.

I suppose he just couldn't defend the blindingly obvious sexism of his diagram so decided to go down the "nah, nah, not listening" route.

Ereshkigal · 07/09/2018 09:33

Actually yes, of course I can.

Ereshkigal · 07/09/2018 09:32

Can't believe he blocked you when you were so polite.

HunnyBunnyXX · 07/09/2018 09:28

Justin doesn't appear to be finding the career of a Sex Educator to be all that lucrative.

After I tweeted the gender rubbish on Tuesday and my tweet starting getting attention, I asked him for some comment. A friend suggested something about getting a real job, to which Justin replied:"I would love a real job to be honest"
twitter.com/bishtraining/status/1037616245317795840

Hardly surprising that it is a struggle when basic facts like biology are wilfully misunderstood, harmful gender stereotypes are (possibly not deliberately) reinforced, and safeguarding isn't given high priority.

His response on the gender diagram was that he was trying to do the opposite of reinforcing stereotypes, but he really didn't think it through. If he had he wouldn't have listed all the obvious female stereotypes under feminine.

Also, first time poster, long time lurker - I've been more of a twitter person up till now. Thanks for all the efforts going in to protecting women's rights! Couldn't work out how to do quotes here, apologies as I was replying to a post up-thread.

FermatsTheorem · 07/09/2018 09:27

We were fucking flattered, thinking that they must have thought we were older and cooler than we really were.

This is a brilliant summing up of the problem, and utterly chilling in how it exposes what goes wrong. What teenagers think is going on in a situation and what actually is going on in a situation can be completely different (and that difference generally doesn't work to the advantage of the teenagers). The job of adults is to protect the teens while they explore their world, grow in maturity and develop the tools to read situations correctly, not throw them to the wolves.

stillathing · 07/09/2018 09:21

And this also should be part of learning about consent. When I was a teen a small group of men in their 20s used to try and hang around with us, offering fags and booze and trying to get off with us. We were fucking flattered, thinking that they must have thought we were older and cooler than we really were.

We were 14. Not fully physically developed. And woefully lacking in sex ed beyond "don't get pregnant". There is a real difference between two 14 year olds being sexual with each other and a man in his mid 20s being with a 14 year old.

Ereshkigal · 07/09/2018 09:19

This seems to be the endgame of the trans attempts to appropriate intersex conditions - pretend that they're so common that any time you pull someone's pants down what you find is as likely to be a surprise as it is to be what you expected, so why would you think you have preferences?

YY.

stillathing · 07/09/2018 09:16

if and fermats I completely agree. Great to talk about body parts and sex frankly and use the right names. But an ADULT should not be overly involved in what specifically makes a TEENAGER feel sexy. It is absolutely a form of grooming to normalise this level of involvement.

AngryAttackKittens · 07/09/2018 09:11

Many people are in the middle of this spectrum with how their bodies are configured.

They're really not. This seems to be the endgame of the trans attempts to appropriate intersex conditions - pretend that they're so common that any time you pull someone's pants down what you find is as likely to be a surprise as it is to be what you expected, so why would you think you have preferences? Suck that ladycock, lesbians!

FermatsTheorem · 07/09/2018 09:02

Cecily, it wouldn't surprise me. I work in the public sector and our training website actually lists the costs of attending courses, and it is not at all unusual for courses to come in at £800 to £1000 per participant per day.

(If you think about it, for a genuine course, that's not unreasonable. £100 per hour would be pretty cheap for a professional billing for services, and you're not just paying for the face-to-face contact time, you're paying for the lesson prep time, which will be 4 or 5 hours for each contact hour. It is of course a complete joke for a shower of shite like this course.)

CecilyNeville · 07/09/2018 08:51

"All my courses are for up to 16 participants and cost £1200 per day (plus travel and accommodation costs)."

Bloody hell, his rate! Is this normal for in-school training? I worked in the voluntary sector for a decade, and attended plenty of pointless, wanky 'training', and the fees for facilitators can't have been as much as this.
MNers, some of you should become sex education trainers, and make your fortune:

ifonlyus · 07/09/2018 08:41

ifnotnow "I have not considered alerting him to the various places he might like to be touched, or what specific sexual positions he might prefer. I figure that young people need to know a) the biology b) about having boundaries and c) about contraception. What they may or may not like in bed is something that(surely?)they will figure out in their own time, gradually, with someone their own age. How DARE this fruitloop tell children to draw porn ( expecting them to view it first??) or think about wether or not they might like anal sex? Who do I complain to? I'm fucking livid."

Yes to all this!!

PeakPants · 07/09/2018 08:40

Fucking insane

TimeLady · 07/09/2018 08:36

We're back to the promoting porn connection again, aren't we? For 14+ (so under age)

Follow the money.....

Starkstaring · 07/09/2018 08:33

I watched a bit of "Naked Attraction" the other night - a contestant sees 4 potential partners naked from the waist down, then chest high and face last.

Whilst I was a bit Shock that anyone would do this, compared to the BISH stuff it seems pleasantly simple and factual and grounded in biology.

FermatsTheorem · 07/09/2018 08:33

Ifnotnow - yes, this, 100%

I've told DS the facts of life. I've talked about sex being great fun so long as you both really want to do it and respect one another as human beings. I've talked a lot about consent. I've talked a bit about porn (he's still very young). What I have not done, and have no intention of doing, because it would be utterly inappropriate, in fact bloody creepy and wrong, is going through the joys of sex page by page and saying "ooh, this one's one of my favourites... no, this one never did it for me, but what do you think?"
