Who's going to the WEP Conference this weekend? Fancy a thread?

I'm the only person I know going. I would be interested to get others MNers thoughts on the conference and the agenda as it happens.

And of course the emergency debate.

Thanks again for the updates. Really useful to have so much info.

I'm home and already in bed. Journey back was a breeze thankfully compared to the traffic nightmare on Friday.

I've spent most of the drive reflecting on the GRA debate and these are my impressions (bear in mind I'm obviously coming from this from a particular viewpoint:

Those that were pro self id:

Compared the trans struggle with that of lesbians and gays 50 years ago.
Went into hyperbole about inclusivity and equality for all women.
Were articulate and persuasive.
Seemed assured that they would stay in the party and win the day.
Seemed less willing to listen, and in some cases were dismissive of concerns.

Those that were concerned about aspects of self id (i.e. not even against it):

Had direct experience of providing services to vulnerable women most at risk from predatory and/or abusive men.
Seemed more willing to talk, debate, find a third way.
Seemed more willing to walk away from WEP if they felt they had "lost".
Had to be more apologetic in language and tone, had to preface remarks to reassure people they weren't transphobic.

It seems even the most respectful, gentle request for concerns to be heard were viewed negatively. The completely inoffensive FPFW leaflet was held up by one speaker as disgusting. God knows what they think of Sticker Woman Grin

Whatever my reservations about the WEP and her I think this is brave

Me too Eresh, I need to see where they are going before I can give up all hope with Labour.

RNBrie · 09/09/2018 15:43

Talk here is that a lot of these subjects (including GRA) can't wait for another conference in 2 years and we'll need a process for changing policy in the interim years. Possibly by electronic voting for all members. Just off the record chat at the moment.

R0wantrees · 09/09/2018 14:24

Thanks to all who attended, spoke and shared from the conference.

Its an important speech I think.

I hope.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 09/09/2018 14:04

Link to Sophie Walker's full speech here (given time constraints she cut it short)

Thanks orange. Sounds positive but 2 years 😩

RhymesWithOrange · 09/09/2018 13:24

I'll be signing off for the next 7 hours. I'm ducking out of conference early because of the length of my journey home. Sorry. Hopefully @Cwenthryth and others can summarise the afternoon.

Oh and Cwenthryth spoke brilliantly. Very proud of her and all the brave speakers this weekend.

@LemonJello - the party is essentially at a massive crossroads re GRA. It will decide what actions to take now, and I think it's likely that it will encompass consultation with all party members, not just those attending conference.

My understanding is that no policy will be passed on this until the next conference. Which will be in two years time?

I don't know what that means for the GRA consultation.

So what does this mean now? Sorry I have no clue how these motions and committees work.

RhymesWithOrange · 09/09/2018 13:04

Smile you are welcome.

GC women. Sensible women. Caring women. Intelligent women. WEP needs you.

Just want to say that I’m still here, I spoke earlier, I’ve been talking with and supporting many people who spoke. I can’t keep up with things here on the ground and post/keep up with this thread at the same time but will endeavour to do so later on. I will say am immensely proud of the debate we just had. Hugely proud that we as a party heard so many women’s voices.

FinallyHere · 09/09/2018 12:59

Thank you very much @RhymesWithOrange , i was keen to attend but family commitments got in the way. As a founder life member, I had been concerned with what i had been seeing and reading about WEP but am seriously hearted by what i have read here.

Thank you for your sterling efforts, its been great to be kept updated.

arranfan · 09/09/2018 12:50

It's been referred back to policy and data committees.

And the make-up of those committees will be crucial.

RhymesWithOrange · 09/09/2018 12:48

This is the longest and and most impassioned debate of the whole weekend. About 20 speakers. It's been referred back to policy and data committees.

Ereshkigal · 09/09/2018 12:35

Well done Sophie and the GC speakers!

RhymesWithOrange · 09/09/2018 12:33

Sophie reaffirmed the party's position on gender id.

Everything she said was spot on. Asking questions should not be framed as transphobic. Need to understand impact on sex based spaces and services. On representation. On lots more. She was awesome.

Subsequent speakers for the motion are getting more love than against.

For anyone who is a little hazy on just what Bindel has been through around this issue, she recently detailed it on Twitter: threadreaderapp.com/thread/1037668994269040643.html

Ereshkigal · 09/09/2018 12:12

I'm encouraged hearing what Sophie is saying. On Twitter

But the legal definition of a woman was changed in 2004 (God I wish we had a time machine!

In legislation which followed 'behind the scenes' lobbying by Press for Change and kept out of the press (see Christine Burns quote in Guardian article linked previously)
So was this properly scrutinised?

Ereshkigal · 09/09/2018 11:53

We are getting the scraps here. Fuck that.

Ereshkigal · 09/09/2018 11:53

YY. Also moves the Overton window.
