MNHQ threadpulling- the Manchester Pride thread

I am very disappointed to see this message when looking for the Manchester Pride thread:
‘thread deleted
Message from MNHQ: We think the wording in the OP post is a bit much - so we're going to take the thread down now.’

That was a key thread with constructive resources about an incident at Manchester Pride which could have been a homophobic (against lesbians) hate crime and was arguably inciting violence and wishing to stop free speech and peaceful legal demonstration at London Pride.
The incident was - from memory as described on the deleted thread- a compere on stage at Manchester Pride saying that the Get the L Out demonstrators at London Pride ‘should have been dragged off by their saggy old tits’.

Something nonsexist and inclusive like that, you know, really in the true spirit of Pride and everything.

Constructive resources had been linked to on the thread about investigating and dealing appropriately with the incident- including one of the Get the L out protestors was posting on there. There were links to ways of joining in the listening exercises run by the organisers (suggested to try to prevent a repeat next year.

Various posters were saying they had felt uncomfortable with the atmosphere at Pride given comments of that kind.

The thread itself was really constructive and responded to an important issue about inclusivity for women and lesbians. I think it really was in the spirit of MN.

I don’t recollect the wording of the OP but surely that could have been edited rather than delete the whole thread? There wasn’t an issue with the thread as a whole.

I am really disappointed @MNHQ about this imbalance on the use of the ban-hammer.

Could I respectfully ask you please to kindly consider putting this thread back in your ‘pending decision’ category - so with a chance of reinstating the thread while you reconsider the balance- rather than deleting the whole thread because of wording in the OP?

Thank you and sorry for the extra work- we do very much appreciate MN as a place to talk within the guidelines and lurk and we do recognise that modding is very resource-intensive. We do also appreciate that a lot of the time you don’t pull threads that you are strongly being urged to. Flowers

The thread itself just wasn’t hateful.
It was discussing speech that was hateful. The speech was encouraging sexualised violence against lesbians- a protected group. Someone on stage addressing a crowd at Pride about ‘violently’ dragging lesbians off ‘by their saggy old tits’?

I find it concerning that just the OP wording- so not the thread posts themselves and not its title- could be enough for a whole important thread to be binned.

Why couldn’t an OP thread be edited and thread left to stand? I didn’t think that was how the rules worked. It wasn’t a Swiss cheese thread. I get it that those are pulled eventually.

I tend to agree with MNHQ on many deletions, but this whole thread? Really?
Such a clear example of misogyny and lesbophobia?

It did seem like a strange decision to me. And a saddening one. We really, really, really need to be able to discuss the increasing discourse of encouraging violence against women among supposedly liberal types and this was a prime example.

I don't normally disagree with mumsnet decisions on pulling posts but that is ridiculous.

PyeWackets · 03/09/2018 07:38

It's exhausting isn't it. The threads run long enough for women to put their time, energy and effort into it then, poof! Shows you why we still need to keep going though, even though the odds are never in our favour.

We ARE making headway, people ARE listening. So, even though women are having their words deleted as they aren't nice enough, we will keep going. When women's words are deleted from a feminist board on a site aimed at women it highlights the need for feminism.

Wow, I thought that was a balanced, thoughtful and informative thread. More importantly a factual thread. There were no insults being thrown around that I saw.

Can’t understand why it was pulled at all. If transright activists don’t like their behaviour being judged and discussed maybe they should not behave how they did?

Poor show MNHQ.
