Had a chuckle at this this morning

Meyer described herself as a trans woman. Is Berns suggesting trans women should not exist?

JellySlice · 16/08/2018 09:49

Then what aspect of the TW would you suggest she use to demonstrate that aping a stereotypical aspect of X doesn't make you X, doesn't entitle you to claim that you are X?

You find her aping offensive. That's the while point!

LassWiADelicateAir · 16/08/2018 08:58

If you wanna feel insulted you can always find a way to be insulted

Why would I feel insulted? It's nothing to do with my being insulted.

Berns' use of the mock accent and that song is racist. There may well be plenty of reasons to criticise Meyer but mocking (it is not a parody, it is mocking) her accent and the fact she is South African ("I've never met a nice South African") aren't valid ones.

RoseTheHatt · 16/08/2018 07:54

there is an entire YouTube industry devoted to making fun of Dennis

As is only right and proper.

MrGHardy · 16/08/2018 00:44

"You can put that spin on it or, as another poster put it it, just came across as a personal insult with a bit of xenophobia thrown in."

If you wanna feel insulted you can always find a way to be insulted.

You said it yourself, you don't like MB. Hence your bias in interpreting this as an insult rather than a parody.

LassWiADelicateAir · 16/08/2018 00:10

I hadn't listened all the way through and just noticed that Berns tagged the Spitting Image song on at end. That makes the comedy South African accent a very cheap shot and as far as I'm concerned blows the apologies for it on here out of the water.

If you are going to mount (in my view pretty flimsy) defences of Berns then Meyer's parting shot could be a reference to Moscato's infamous twitter post of the same phrase.

Re Riley Dennis- there is an entire YouTube industry devoted to making fun of Dennis.

RoseTheHatt · 15/08/2018 23:56

Tbf she’d have to be a saint to resist the likes of the eminently mockable Riley Dennis and his ridiculous girlfriend squealing about how, like, they’re just so gaaaay 🙄

Bespin · 15/08/2018 22:13

I think that she mocks a lot of people and I think. she could make her points without doing that.

Noqont · 15/08/2018 22:12

Love this. Particularly the suck my dick. Tells us all we need to know really.

LassWiADelicateAir · 15/08/2018 02:11

Not sure what point you are making. Do you expect me to defend either of them?

The Spitting Image one is from 1986- pre the fall of apartheid. It was of its time. Actually her video made me think of it, and that it was of its time and not really for recycling now. If Berns is aware of it then her choice of comedy South African accent is more questionable.

The other one is probably from Q8 , which was early 80s. And it isn't funny.

placemats · 12/08/2018 22:41

Was it less politically correct than these?

LassWiADelicateAir · 12/08/2018 22:18

MB was clearly making the point that aping a behaviour stereotypical of a group does not make you a member of that group

You can put that spin on it or, as another poster put it it, just came across as a personal insult with a bit of xenophobia thrown in.

Sweetsongbird1 · 12/08/2018 21:02

I think she is great and there was plenty to keep me going while I had a few hours kid and dh free!

You can’t be every ones cup of tea all the time and no one is perfect - I don’t expect or think MB is - I just like her point of view and she draws to to issues I would have missed. So for me I like watching her Wine

VickyEadie · 12/08/2018 19:18

MB was pretending to be South African for an obvious reason.

The whole thing was swimming in irony.

RoseTheHatt · 12/08/2018 19:00

Why don’t you like her Lass?

JellySlice · 12/08/2018 18:45

Not excuses. Explanations.

You don't have to like what MB did.

Unlike transpeople, most of us here feel that you are entitled to your own beliefs and opinions, and do not have to swallow ours with a glass of Koolaid.

SisterNotCisTerf · 12/08/2018 18:39

Well you don’t have to.

LassWiADelicateAir · 12/08/2018 18:38

Not buying these excuses.

JellySlice · 12/08/2018 18:32

Bother, meant to say TWs' behaviour, and NATWALT, of course.

JellySlice · 12/08/2018 18:31

MB was clearly making the point that aping a behaviour stereotypical of a group does not make you a member of that group.

The transwoman was objecting that another transwoman was not aping womanly behaviour or appearance. Was not 'womaning' well enough for them.

SisterNotCisTerf · 12/08/2018 18:28

Yes jarring is a good word. It pointed out how ridiculous TM and others are. MB is no more South African because she did an accent than TM is woman because she wears lipstick.

JellySlice · 12/08/2018 18:27

I couldn’t help but see the imitating her SA accent as a mockery of TMs imitation of woman.

Frankly, many TMs' behaviour is a mockery of women.

NATMALT, obviously.

TransplantsArePlants · 12/08/2018 18:27

Sister

Yes. That's what MB was doing. Jarring, wasn't it? And that is the point she's trying to make.

SisterNotCisTerf · 12/08/2018 18:19

Meyer is from a white South African background and that is the accent she has. Why mock that?

No that’s not what I meant. I meant she was using an element of Meyers identity, something that makes her, her, and imitating it. In the same way Meyers is imitating “woman”. As in “if you can imitate part of who i am then I can imitate part of who you are, see how you feel about that” kind of thing. She wasn’t mocking her for being South African, she was mocking her for imitating women.

RoseTheHatt · 12/08/2018 18:11

Why don’t you like MB, Lass??
