Looks like Grindr are setting up a trans version... but the name...

They've chosen is "kindr".

Given the disturbing underground usage of the term "kind" is that not an odd choice?

They've not said exactly what the new app is but from the video it does imply it's trans-focused.

I’m curious how a non-discriminatory dating app would work - does it make random matches of people who are then morally obliged to have sex?

bd67th · 11/08/2018 00:30

What will happen is that people will remove banned language from profiles but still either convey the same message in code or else reject the people they don't want further down the line. Banning language doesn't make a white man want sex with an asian one.

I'm also thinking that letting assholes out themselves as assholes early on benefits the wider community. If someone's profile says "no fats", I'm not going to cry, I'm going roll my eyes and block that profile because even if I was thin, I wouldn't want to date a judgey twat like that.

Public Service Announcement:

This thread is one of those that appears to be attracting a lot of reports leading to deleted posts. We might have a "moderation by twitter" event going on.

TheDishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 10/08/2018 23:56

Why is it well done to grindr? Its the exact opposite! They are having one app for all the 'other' Hmm to go where racism is not allowed, therefore one where it is? No racism on kindr but if you are a racist try out the original grindr instead. One for white, slim people? Tackling racism would surely be to ban it from their app in the first place?

Bingpot · 10/08/2018 23:52

I can't help but see it as a power play. There's an obvious and undeniable connection to paedophilia, both in the name and the slogan's wording ('play'). But if you make it, you're a transphobic bigot. Feels like we've been baited.

And aside from that, 'sexual racism' is not a thing. No-one owes you a diversity shag.

DJLippy · 10/08/2018 23:18

A great endorsement here

Hangingaroundtheportal · 10/08/2018 23:05

Also, just seen the tagline

'It's time to play nice'?

Eeeeeeeeeek!

Hangingaroundtheportal · 10/08/2018 23:01

I have to say, I immediately read this as 'kinder' as in to rhyme with 'grinder'. But yes, once someone said there was a problem I quickly realised the German 'kinder' association. Especially because we also have 'Tinder' which rhymes with that.

A bad choice I would say. Couldn't they have come up with something else?

ConfessionsOfTeenageDramaQueen · 10/08/2018 22:55

Well, for the people coming from Twitter - this isn't some Mumsnet conspiracy: there are a number of comments under Grindr's original tweet commenting on the poor choice of name.

This thread isn't about the concept at all (although as others have pointed out it's a pretty flawed concept to create an app that filters out racism because your original app apparently can't) it's about the choice of name, which seems inappropriate for a hook-up app whichever way you interpret it.

Let's just say that this isn't being run by branding genuises.

SisterNotCisTerf · 10/08/2018 22:43

If you want to be/date a racist go to Grindr. If you don’t, go to kindr.

SweetGrapes · 10/08/2018 22:41

Sorry Grindr not tindr

nauticant · 10/08/2018 22:40

So have I got this right?

Sorry but it seems not. As pinknews would have it, grindr users can be racist and grindr is looking to launch a version where the racism is filtered out. Apparently.

SweetGrapes · 10/08/2018 22:37

So have I got this right? Kindr is the non racist one, therefore they are acknowledging that Tindr is the racist app?

And they had no idea whatsoever that kinder means child? None of them went to or have kids in kindergarten?

Yeah, right.

nauticant · 10/08/2018 22:36

Back in 1999 I watched in utter astonishment that Lucasfilm had gone out of its way, at considerable effort and expense, to include in that year's most anticipated film a character based on racist stereotypes.

At the point I realised that there can be no end to the blindness and stupidity of committees.

CholloDeNombre · 10/08/2018 22:28

It's a ridiculous name for an app, or a campaign. Far too many undercurrents and associations - it takes a five second google search to recognise that.

Which makes me wonder why I'm not employed as a research assistant for new apps, because I think I'd be ace at it.

Datun · 10/08/2018 22:24

It would make more sense to have a set of ticky-boxes "I am..." and another set "I am interested in..." and then use the ticked boxes to match people.

That's what I was thinking. On the other hand, even putting the options in might prompt the feeling of exclusion/racism.

Either way. It's a good idea to try and reduce racism. But sexual racism is something different, I feel.

I think, yet again, that racism is being appropriated. To make a point.

SisterNotCisTerf · 10/08/2018 22:22

Ah ok, yes sensible enough.

SisterNotCisTerf · 10/08/2018 22:22

Surely instead of creating a whole new “racism free” app, which is essentially validating the “racist dating one”, Grindr could actually just address the racism on the existing app and delete racist users?

nauticant · 10/08/2018 22:21

No, you haven't. I'm just saying that following the speculation upthread, that I've participated in, I've now decided to step back until I learn more.

SisterNotCisTerf · 10/08/2018 22:19

Have I done/said something that is dangerous nauticant?

anonymouseagain · 10/08/2018 22:17

Nintendo spent a fortune deciding on "Wii" to name their console and in Geordieland it was promptly dubbed the "Wi-i", pronounced “why I". "Kindr" is about as well-thought-out as names go.

TBH, I don't see how stopping people from putting "no fats, no blacks" in their profiles is going to actually improve matters. Instead of seeing straight away that a guy isn't interested, you'll chat and send pics and then find out, wasting both yopur times. It would make more sense to have a set of ticky-boxes "I am..." and another set "I am interested in..." and then use the ticked boxes to match people.

Datun · 10/08/2018 22:16

I've never been on a dating app, so I may not be getting it. But if someone is putting something racist on their profile, even unkind, can't that person be put on a warning/deleted?

nauticant · 10/08/2018 22:12

I'm saying there might be mischief afoot and there's no harm in being aware of this and cautious SisterNotCisTerf.

Datun · 10/08/2018 22:00

sexual racism, and transphobia and body shaming'.

Sexual racism is not being sexually attracted to a particular race? That is acceptable. It's unavoidable.

Transphobia and body shaming often means claiming a penis is female and don't say otherwise just because that doesn't meet your 'impossible beauty standards' of what it means to be female.
