Chuggers target 91 women for every 6 men

I've worked in charities for years and have trained Street and door to door fundraisers.

I've never known of an agency over here telling fundraisers to approach women with prams. If I found out my fundraisers were doing that is bollock them. I've bollocked fundraisers for using street fundraising to pull women.

A few years ago UK research found that men signed up to women and vice versa. So if there are lots of male fundraisers Vs female the figures don't entirely surprise me.

Fundraisers aren't allowed to block your way and I don't think they should ever be putting their arm round your shoulder. There are strict rules set down by the fundraising regulator.

Bad fundraisers annoy the hell out of me. I once told one I didn't give a shit about baby seals. 😁

One came to the door with a trainee and asked would I donate to a deaf children's charity

When i said no thank you ....she said oh do you not care about deaf children?

And i said no, i dont think she was expecting that

And another was rude to me ...stupidily rude as i was interested in signing up....but she blew it and now ive no time for them any more

(My success at deflecting them with my appearance differs with the season...but i have resting murderer face soooo....)

We regularly have a dog charity with some shiny cheesy-smiled who regularly uses "Hey gorgeous. Do you like dogs? A gorgeous girl like you obviously loves dogs!"

1. I'm not gorgeous, I'm clearly showing my age. You and I both know it.
2. I'm 40, I'm not a girl. I don't look remotely young enough to in 'girl' territory. Again; you and I both know it.
3. How can you possibly assume from my mere appearance that I look like I like dogs?

I always wondered what these 'Chuggers' were.

I've never met one. Now I know why.

The beard, permanent scowl and brisk marching pace probably help too.

It's shocking how manipulative they can be. I once got: "Excuse me, Madam, could you spare 5 minutes to save a child's life?"

I had one at the door once. She had a Glasgow junkie drawl (awwweriggggtttt maaaannnnn hooooowwwrree you todaaaaay) and proceeded to tell me that I was lucky to live in such a lovely house and how surely I'd feel that I'd like to contribute to some poor people who aren't as fortunate as you etc etc.
Eh no...i worked hard and its my house and I don't need a fecking guilt trip on my own doorstep thanks very much. Door closed.
I give plenty to charity but I stop as soon as they bug me.

I wonder what the figures are on how much people give to charity by gender. If they focus on women it is probably because it works. I've never signed up on the street (or at my front door) and I've never increased my donation when they ring up. That one annoys me too. But I do feel sorry for them on the street and in the call centre.

I look through them. If they get in my way I say NO very loudly and carry on walking. The cheeky chappy insistent ones (give us a smile love, etc) get a firm FUCK OFF. They're annoying me, why should I be polite?!

I once had one run right in front of me and used his clipboard to stop me walking on. Now, I don't usually swear in public, but it was a natural reaction that day. He got it both barrels.

Where I live the local hospice has actually started sending them door to door. It's ridiculous as I'm often home alone during the day and don't feel comfortable answering the door to some random man. It's a good cause and I feel some empathy for then doing what they feel they need to do to bring in donations but at the same time a lot of their tactics are just really wrong. There need to be new laws I think.

LOATHE the cheeky chappy type ones. I had one in Newcastle a while back who wouldn't accept no and fell into stride beside me and then PUT HIS ARM AROUND MY SHOULDERS. He took one look at my face and instantly fucked off but how dare he? And another (not legit, I think, selling "joke books for disabled kids") who did a loud hoity-toity style "ooooOOOOooooh!" waving his hands about and generally trying to shame me when I said a perfectly polite no.
Fucking hate the bastards.

I hate chuggers even more now.
I usually just keep walking, either say 'no, sorry' (socialised response) or 'no, I'm already late' (another built in apology). They're generally just kids doing a job so I don't like to be unkind.

I tell them I'm only 16yo....even though I'm blatantly a few decades older!

It's the whole "allright me darlin, see you've been having a nice day shopping now don't you care about the lesser-spotted Guatemalan dung beetle a lovely lady like you" shite they pull. I've complained to the charities in question before when they started pulling the sexist shite and commenting on my appearance.

Since I got older, more stressed, and more fat I'm less visible to them now but they get nowt more than a "no thank you" from me.

The door-to-door ones ring, then peer through the window and start gurning and waving at you if you ignore the door.

My town is infested with chuggers, can't ever go shopping without being accosted by them 2-3 times in one afternoon. And I've definitely seen them target women mainly.

I'm usually a polite but firm "no thanks" whilst continuing to walk on. But I find myself being rude to those 'cheeky chappy' types that try the flirting techniques. Don't insult my intelligence you little wanker!

I don't actually say this out loud, kids around n' all that! But my well-rehearsed eye-rolling bitch-face says it all.

I feel no guilt whatsoever about giving a brisk, cheerful, loud NO THANKS and continuing to walk without breaking stride.

Doesn't surprise me at all. It's the moving into my path that I object to. I just swerve round them BUT I always feel guilty - they're young, maybe their first crap job and no doubt are working on some sort of commission.

I just say no and keep walking. I don't care if they think I'm rude. I also told one charity I do donate to that if they ever again phoned me to ask me to increase my donation, I would be cancelling it entirely.

Bastards - you can bet it's in the training, women already earn less if working, or are SAHM/working part time, and then they come after us for extra donations because we're a soft touch.

My response to this research is so what if they do. There really isn't any effort required to ignore them and walk on as the Dowager says.

And no it doesn't mean you are behaving like a man - you are behaving like an adult.

I just say a firm NO and walk on. Like a man, I suppose. They usually recoil in horror, probably because I generally look quite feminine and smiley.

I'm like a bloody chugger magnet - god knows why, because I have strangely never yet handed over my bank details to a smiley youth with a clipboard in the street and don't plan to. I will remember this statistic though and maybe start asking them what their male:female ratio is.

While I do my best resting bitch face, I was out with my mother and she's a chugger's dream.

She hates to be 'rude' and is the epitome of female socialization so I can see why they target like they do, but am working on her...
