I realise how much precious time I have wasted on social media (Twitter, mainly) and yet only 17% of people use Twitter.

So I am vowing to spend much less time sparring with strangers (and bots?!) and to do what I can in the offline world.

I'm still tentative about putting my head above the parapet, but I've come to see that there is SO much you can achieve offline, even from the comfort of your sofa and/or without revealing your work to the wider world.

Examples:

Visit your elected representatives. I've met two face to face at their surgeries and both were hugely positive experiences, with real promise of follow-up. It made me feel more hopeful than I have in some time. Correspondence and meetings with elected reps are confidential.

Crawl ALL OVER your local council/NHS Trust/local education authority website. Read everything on there that relates to their equalities policies. Work out what the implications are for girls and women and then get writing. Write to the elected representatives but also write to Chief Executives, directors etc. Royal Mail used to say that 'nothing gets through like a letter' and it's really true. But equally, emailing is good too.

Subterfuge leafleting. Generate a leaflet/flyer: simple, clear messaging with a clear call to action. Point people towards WPUK or FPFW websites or create an anonymous blog (set blog up for free using Blogger or Wordpress) that sets out any particular local concerns. Buy a pack of Blutak and take a wander around women-only spaces and stick them in toilet cubicles or walls/mirrors: toilets and changing rooms in leisure centres, department stores, cafes and restaurants, public buildings, art galleries, theatres - EVERYWHERE!

Contact your friends to raise awareness of these issues. I've got an issue with one of our council policies and am discovering that virtually no-one was aware of the policy. It has sparked others to write to their councillors etc.

Form a feminist group. Meet up regularly for a drink/coffee to talk about what you can all do individually or collectively.

Try to get stuff in your local paper/media. Anything to break through into the mainstream to raise awareness whether it's a stunt (Man Friday style or whatever) or a hard-nosed review of council policies that you publish on a blog.

You won't believe how much power you really have if you organise!

This is not to say that being online has no value. Mumsnet has been so important to me, gathering intelligence about the trans/self-ID agenda. But most ordinary people do not engage online and we know how easy it is for trolls to infiltrate online groups.

Going to obey my own advice now, so signing off...

I'm looking forward to Cesira's cartoon willy from the other thread, as I think people round here might balk at the more penis-y penis. IYSWIM.

madja · 10/08/2018 16:22

Thanks for all these ideas. This is what I need to do, get out into the real world more and make an impact. I just had no Ideas on how to do that.
So thank you, my cogs are now whirring!

CherryAustin · 10/08/2018 16:13

Well, that's my plan too. I'm also thinking of going round pubs & cafes, putting them on tables and seeing if people want to talk - the last part depends on skin thickness; I'll have to pick the right day!

WarmWishes · 10/08/2018 12:09

Thanks for this. I am going to print them off.

I was thinking of surreptitiously leaving then in supermarket/restaurant/cafe toilets. Community notice boards.

Is this the sort of thing? Any other ideas/places?

CherryAustin · 10/08/2018 02:18

I meant to add that it would be nice if people could put the flyers on their various cloud accounts (and Instagram?) and let their terfy contacts know, too. I think a network of sources, sharing the materials, could be helpful because we need to make it as easy as possible. Turning them into physical leaflets/stickers/whatever is work, and so is distributing them & starting conversations where possible. That has to be done by each campaigner or group, but at least we can let one another use our documents & designs.

I've got to admit my printouts - done on a cheap inkjet & cut with a razor blade - are less than perfect. If you see one with smudged ink and a raggedy edge ... I'll be thrilled it's made it into the wide world Grin

CherryAustin · 10/08/2018 01:58

This is a flyer collection - and an annotated copy of the GRA consultation explainer - that some of us put together last month. You're most welcome to download 'em and edit as you see fit.

Feel free to PM, twit or fb me with any you'd like added to the dropbox. If we can manage to get a wide selection of materials online so that various terfs Wink may access them, all the better.

I've found that the online world is great for meeti like minded people and finding support, but a rubbish place to debate anything: it's really difficult to persuade anyone to shift their thinking even a tiny bit.

Meanwhile in real life I have had a huge influence over many of my friends. They are much more open and talking to them is a far more productive use of my time.

Beamur · 09/08/2018 22:43

Funny thread just started about a sticker campaign being reported on in Pink News. It could be a summer of stickers!

WaddIelikeapenguin · 09/08/2018 22:11

how that one is brilliant!

Someone suggested adding leaflets to supermarket notice boards - i have noticed lots of our local country parks etc also have local info type notice boards too Wink

howonearthdidwegethere · 09/08/2018 21:48

Oooh oooh! Friend found this in a loo (in central Edinburgh). Told her she shouldn't have taken it down but left it there and snapped it with her camera phone, though. eye roll

Thank you OP! These are great ideas for that I want to put into action in real life.

I'm based in the Republic of Ireland, where this issue is smaller and less overtly divisive (most likely because it hasn't impacted things like All Women's Shortlists etc...yet. )
But I am starting to read up on our equality legislation and learn who is involved in what organisations, how to make contact and how to be involved.

I wouldn't even dare to go public yet until I have a better sense of who supports what. There is a general assumption among mainstream feminist groups that any questioning of this issue makes you a terf - even among Repeal the 8th campaigners who I would have a lot of respect for. It is so disappointing.
I am so impressed by Ann Sinnott and the women on this forum, who have been a real inspiration. Thank you.

howonearthdidwegethere · 09/08/2018 21:30

Why on earth was that deleted, MNHQ? (I'm new on here but can't for the life of me work out why.)

I think this was the link you shared, BetsyM00:

Here's another example of a homemade leaflet:

I didn't post an image, I just posted a link.

Don't know why it was deleted. I'll pm it to you.

ArcheryAnnie · 08/08/2018 22:13

BetsyM00 would you be willing to link to where that image you posted was? I think if you just post it as an image again it'll be deleted again.

BetsyM00 · 08/08/2018 19:10

I'm on the web and just below where you type your message in there are three "Choose File" boxes to click for adding images to your post.

Your images don't show up in preview, but it does work when you press 'Post Message'.

howonearthdidwegethere · 08/08/2018 17:39

Thanks, BetsyM00. Those are great!

Btw is it possible to upload an image on these boards? How do I do it?

BetsyM00 · 08/08/2018 14:20

For those in Scotland there are some leaflets and stickers here.

placemats · 08/08/2018 12:02

Please do not link back to a Facebook page. The whole idea of this is to get offline. I've been doxxed because I liked ManFriday on Facebook. Not that it has impacted on my everyday life.

seafret · 08/08/2018 11:21

Wow! Thank you for the links and tips on barcode thingies LaSquirrel and HaXXor :) will try to get my head round it. Strugging brain-wise but will have a look ASAP.

And also look at those links to stickers and posters etc.

I am thinking of doing a range of posters, some with questions eg "why do some group want to change the law to allow men to selfID as women and access women's toilets and changing rooms?" Or something more challenging/ provocative posed as a sort of neutral question like "why are boys being allowed to self-ID as girls, join the Girl Guides and share tents without parental consent?" - to try to avoid the accusations of 'hating', then put some info about the dangers and women's rights and links to orgs. Might do some tear off strips too.

Or will wait for the FPFW stuff. Yay!! Than you!

WarmWishes · 08/08/2018 09:59

Oh this is great! Thank you!

GirlScout72 · 08/08/2018 09:57

Hey

Just chipping in, concur with all said here. Just to say FPFW are in the process of producing leaflets and fliers and postcards exactly for this purpose, it'll all be on the website soon. There'll be packs that you can request posted out to you.

Cheers

GirlScout.
