As I was saying about the police.....

Wtf is "misgendering"?! Genuinely have no clue what this might be and whatever it is was totally and utterly non-intentional.

To those who doubted - this is 100% genuine.

To those who thought I was being rude that night - I'd like to make the point that nothing I said was directed at the person. I was making genetic statements for the purpose of conversation, not carrying out a personal attack on one person.

If this stays up then I will post a screenshot of the text I received from the PO.

OP for your own personal “safety” (from a legal perspective) I would just refuse to engage with the complainant on anything even close to trans issues. If they bring it up you can either leave the room/area/conversation or just look at them blankly until they finish speaking and remain silent. They can only have the conversation if you respond. Don’t give them anything to use against you.

Winniesalot · 08/08/2018 09:50

Vicky - yes, it seems almost impossible these days to have a calm, rational discussion on this topic. And being reported for a hate crime after one such conversation does not help matters!

I met a TG man in a pub a few weeks ago when I was there with friends. I accidentally knocked his drink over and the table was soaked so I bought him a new drink and invited him to sit with us.

He was 18, hasn't yet had hormones but fully identifies as a man. And the group of us had a lovely conversation about TG issues, how you know you are, at what age can you be considered for surgical treatment, when does he think his transition would be complete, should younger children be allowed to decide their gender ,etc. He invited questions and when we apologised for potentially causing offence with them, he said "No, no, no. I'm perfectly happy to answer questions. In fact, I like it because I can set the facts straight."

Now doesn't that approach promote understanding and probably tolerance as well?

The problem is not "trans people" at all, but rather the idea that biological sex is somehow less relevant than an unverifiable internal declaration of gender identity now, and the drive to enshrine this into law.

I've been told how evil I am by more than one woman (I don't mean trans) merely for wanting to discuss this calmly and rationally.

Ereshkigal · 08/08/2018 09:30

I think its also worth considering the influence that charities & organisations such as Stonewall, Mermaids etc play in reinforcing ideas of what a hate crime is.

YY.

heresyandwitchcraft · 08/08/2018 09:27

And to those wondering how a conversation between acquaintances got reported to the police - I can only say that the person involved seems incapable of actually HAVING a conversation about TG issues. Any discussion = hate crime apparently.

This is exactly my concern on this topic. We have even seen the reactions of other posters who basically echo this point of view, and my question to them is: when and how are we allowed to speak about these issues then? Because I think having a calm, rational, facts based approach here is important, but we keep getting accused of hatred for even wanting to just talk about real concerns around actual changes to the law that affect who falls into the category "female" legally. I do not condone any transphobic abuse. The problem is not "trans people" at all, but rather the idea that biological sex is somehow less relevant than an unverifiable internal declaration of gender identity now, and the drive to enshrine this into law. Because I don't agree with that principle, and I think it's vulnerable to exploitation by genuinely bad actors. In fact, I think we have already seen examples of such exploitation, that somehow always get dismissed by the "no true trans person" fallacy argument.
The silencing tactics surrounding any part of this discussion are making things worse. If gender-critical concerns are all "bunk" then the least we could ask for is a constructive dialogue so that our minds could be convinced that some safeguards will be put in place regarding freedom of speech, freedom of belief, women's rights, female political representation, accuracy of data-keeping including tracking previous convictions under a different name and gender, and provision of single-sex spaces (to name a few).

I must say, OP, I agree with Crow. Narcs don't give up easily, so if that's the case here, do mind how you go.

And generally: those rushing in to angrily defend vexatious reporting of petty spats to the police on the basis of most oppressed/stunning, brave might like to consider that promoting narcs as poster children for the cause might not be the best strategy.

Thanks Rowan, that's really interesting. It's a sorry state of affairs that this person is potentially diverting police resources away from those who are actually being discriminated.

Hey ho, not to worry, it's all about them and not the wider issues Hmm

There was a thread a few months ago which may be of interest and is perhaps relevent:
OP womanformallyknownaswoman wrote:
"What's essential is dealing with reports and complaints of any kind is discerning between a usual, a persistent and a querulant (unusually persistent) complainant.

The persistent complainants’ pursuit of vindication and retribution fits badly with complaints systems established to deliver reparation and compensation. Extract from a report on Unusually Persistent Complainants against the Police in Scotland:

The research on which this report is based arose from my view, shared by many others, that increasingly organisations are required to manage people who make persistent complaints. This small group of individuals can consume a disproportionate amount of an organisation’s resources, pursuing what they believe are legitimate complaints, for longer and with more intensity than the majority of the population would consider reasonable.

The key to managing unacceptable complainant conduct is to manage your own response to it (New South Wales Ombusdman, 2009A) and the importance of adequate training, supervision and managerial support for complaints handlers can not be overstated.

They used the term ‘querulousness’ to refer to a constellation of behaviours and attitudes, which may, or may not, arise secondary to a major mental disorder. The key is that it is a problem behaviour, the causes of which can be many and varied. The behaviour involves “the unusually persistent pursuit of a personal grievance in a manner seriously damaging to the individual’s economic, social, and personal interests, and disruptive to the functioning of the courts and/or other agencies attempting to resolve the claims” (Mullen and Lester, 2006)."

Winniesalot I don't want to scaremonger but just watch your back for a few weeks. If the person is a narc they won't take kindly to being told their complaint is of no consequence.

Winniesalot · 08/08/2018 09:09

And why wait for 7 weeks to report it?????

OP posts:
Winniesalot · 08/08/2018 09:01

Salem - but if she was spoken to about wasting police time, I have no doubt that would provoke a complaint about the PO involved being discriminatory and whole internal investigation being demanded...

Datun · 08/08/2018 08:58

Thanks for the update, OP.

It's a testament to the current distorted climate that everyone is mildly surprised that the issue was dealt with in an appropriate manner.

OP, thanks for coming back and updating us.
I'm am glad you're okay Brew Cake

Triumph for common sense!

LangCleg · 08/08/2018 08:28

Narcs gonna narc.

Ereshkigal · 08/08/2018 08:27

This is so grandiose! Makes me wonder whether the real problem here is a narc Cluster B person rather than anything to do with the person being trans or not.

Was my first thought.

AngryAttackKittens · 08/08/2018 08:23

Good to hear that the police treated this complaint with precisely the level of seriousness that it deserved.

Makes me wonder whether the real problem here is a narc Cluster B person rather than anything to do with the person being trans or not.

I suspect that the trans part is just a convenient cause to hang the sense of aggrieved entitlement that goes along with being a narc on. If it was possible to file charges against people for not believing you're a genius they'd try that too.

LangCleg · 08/08/2018 08:02

Glad it's all done and dusted using common sense, OP.

TG person wanted this dealt with "at the highest level"

This is so grandiose! Makes me wonder whether the real problem here is a narc Cluster B person rather than anything to do with the person being trans or not.

the narcissistic personality is characterized by a pervasive pattern of grandiosity, hypersensitivity to evaluation by others, and lack of empathy

Cartertheunstoppablesexmachine · 08/08/2018 07:32

Thanks for your update OP and so glad that common sense prevailed.

Still aghast that this individual wasted everyone's time.

Talk about entitlement - demanding it be dealt with at the highest level, when some genuine causes cannot even get a police officer out these days.

But that's the selfish, narcissitic nature of some.

user1457017537 · 08/08/2018 07:31

When home invasion is being downgraded to Civil Trespass by the Police I find this a massive abuse of Police resources, even if the visit was to close off and tick boxes re the non- incident.

SimonBridges · 08/08/2018 07:23

No, Lasquirrel. That is not true at all.
We must both grow up, that does not happen at all, so I have been told anyway.
