What is with all the thread zapping?

I can understand that this one ("DH and Jess Bradley") was iffy, and based on unsubstantiated hearsay.

But this one ("have you ever doubted your views" had been going for quite some time, was almost at 800 comments, and then zapped. When I asked around about it (I was just about to settle in and read it finally) women did not think it was 'troll hunting'.

Basically, it does not seem right to let it go to 800 then kill it. Particularly because it throws out all the work that women have put into it - a kind of devaluing women's work issue. If there was an issue with troll hunting, why didn't the mods jump in and put a stop to it? Why let it run so long (and it went for a week or so I think) then kill it?

What say you @MNHQ?

As the OP on this thread, I request you swim off now Turtle. You have derailed enough, you have not contributed, and you have possibly made more enemies than friends, because you won't abide by their request not to @ them when active on the thread. You will find the same thing within the feminist forum. Although you don't much like talking about feminism, more about yourself it seems.

So ... toodles!

I didn't realise you could turn off that @ nonsense. I'm doing that - I absolutely hate getting emails that someone has @ed me. It feels like someone demanding that I pay attention to their opinion. So I just delete the email and refuse to look.

IDontEatFriedTurtle · 09/08/2018 12:19

If we can't have a disagreement about @ing protocol on Fwr without it being a bunfight I think we are probably fucked.

AngryAttackKittens · 09/08/2018 12:11
Hmm

Not my protocol, something that's pointed out here all the time. If for whatever reason you're determined to turn that into a bunfight you're going to have to do it without me, because I can't be bothered.

IDontEatFriedTurtle · 09/08/2018 12:07

Which bit was shirty, my response as recopied above was pretty polite actually. I am making a request that people do use the At so I don't miss things? I am disagreeing with you. Confused You said I posted a "fuck you rant" and la squireel said I "think the world revolves around me". You have been rude. Deciding protocol for an entire board that you don't own and demanding others follow it is rude.

AngryAttackKittens · 09/08/2018 11:54

If anyone's being rude it's you. A request was made, you got shirty in response. That's on you, not anyone else.

IDontEatFriedTurtle · 09/08/2018 11:54

Surely you must be able to edit that in your settings, so you don';t get an email? I don't think @ is poor manners or they wouldn't have given it to us an option? hmm I prefer to be atted as otherwise you miht miss that someone responded to you.

My fuck you rant. Hmm

IDontEatFriedTurtle · 09/08/2018 11:53

ot sure why "don't do that, it's annoying" should prompt a "fuck you, I do what I want!" rant in response.

I didn't say fuck you.

I am not allowed to have an opinion on how I can post, but you're allowed an opinion on how everyone else should post? Do you not see what you are saying or what? Yes, I will continue to post as I want, I find it incredibly annoying to miss posts directed at me because some people don't know how to @ people.

IDontEatFriedTurtle · 09/08/2018 11:50

Also it doesn't matter that this isn't AIBU kittens because all those AIBU threads still move into my TIO list. Maybe some of you only post on FWR so you can keep track easier as they are slower moving.

There is fuck all reason for you or lasquirrel to be rude to other FWR posters though for disagreeing with you.

AngryAttackKittens · 09/08/2018 11:49

A quick browse will show lots of people asking not to be @-ed. This is not something I came up with all by myself.

Not sure why "don't do that, it's annoying" should prompt a "fuck you, I do what I want!" rant in response.

IDontEatFriedTurtle · 09/08/2018 11:37

That is the protocol in the feminist forum anyway.

Do you mind sending me a link to this protocol? Grin I'm pretty sure I haven't seen it in 8 years on MN. I don't remember getting a vote on it, who wrote it?

So glad the world revolves around you Turtle.

yes, I think the world revolves around me because I use the ability to @ people, to you know, @ them. Hmm Don't be ridiculous.

LaSquirrel · 09/08/2018 10:49

So glad the world revolves around you Turtle.

Hey, see what I did there? Bolded your name. That is the protocol in the feminist forum anyway. That way you can lazily skim and respond to some post with your name bolded. Magic.

I do if I am properly involved in a thread Rufus but if I actually did that with all the crap I read, I'd be basically glued to MN.

Attack kittens, I have been using FWR for years and years the @ option is pretty new so as far as I can tell no one has decided the etiquette/protocol and people can do as they like. Just because you find it annoying doesn't mean other people will. I'm not going to trawl hours of posts in the off chance someone wrote me because some people can't be arsed to spend 5 minutes adjusting their settings.

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 09/08/2018 10:24

I always check and see if anyone has said anything about my post

A couple of times ive made what i thought was a completely innocuous post thats been misconstrued (or more likely i didn't explain myself very well) and ive felt ive needed to explain myself further...or defend myself!

But thats cos im needy Grin

And paranoid!

Ive switched that @ thing off

AngryAttackKittens · 09/08/2018 10:08

This is not AIBU, and no, I'm not going to faff around with my settings just because someone wants the general protocol followed by most people on this particular board adjusted for their convenience.

IDontEatFriedTurtle · 09/08/2018 10:05

Thanks Rowan, I use tio but the point I was making is I might comment on 10 or 20 threads a day, but I don't read every post after in case someone responds to me. I dip in and out to tell people they are very unreasonable and then fuck off unless I am atted

R0wantrees · 09/08/2018 09:48

IDontEatFriedTurtle

There's an option above to see the comments just of threads you've started or contributed to, also to mark threads to follow. Its a useful function.

Talk: I'm on / I'm watching / I started

IDontEatFriedTurtle · 09/08/2018 09:39

No, but I very rarely have 15 conversations at once either in RL. And I never let the person I am talking to continue to chat away while I ignore them to have an entirely different conversation about BLW. So it's not really the same at all. If you only post on FWR and you follow every thread, you may well be able to keep up with every time a person responds to you but I don't and lots of other people don't either. I'd prefer someone actually let me know they are talking to me if you hadn't actually @me just now, I'd have no idea you responded as I 'd already stopped paying attention to the thread.

thebewilderness · 09/08/2018 02:02

@IDontEatFriedTurtle

Do you normally text people or tap them on the shoulder to get their attention while you are having a conversation with them?
I do not think so.
We @ people who are not currently involved in the thread.
It probably would never have developed as an issue if MRAs had not used it as a means to harass women on FWR. Kinda like a barking dog.

thebewilderness · 09/08/2018 01:58

@ing people is considered bad manners when they are on the thread having a conversation with you.
Do you normally text someone while you are talking to them?

AccioWine · 07/08/2018 15:50

I was wondering how many of the reports/ complaints were coming via Twitter, but thought that felt a bit paranoid. Maybe I should dig out that tin foil hat again...

LeiaTheSlaya · 07/08/2018 15:48

It would be interesting to know if MN are analysing this though.

It would make interesting reading that's for sure.

Who was it that got the stats on number increase on FWR visits? Maybe this could be part of a follow up?

IDontEatFriedTurtle · 07/08/2018 15:35

Also please don't @ people, it sends them a message every time you do it and is generally considered poor etiquette.(Even I know that and I'm not exactly Miss Manners)

Surely you must be able to edit that in your settings, so you don';t get an email? I don't think @ is poor manners or they wouldn't have given it to us an option? Hmm I prefer to be atted as otherwise you miht miss that someone responded to you.

R0wantrees · 07/08/2018 13:55

I don't think the Twitter report account is running but there's still a lot of Twitter watching and discussing which posts/ threads to report.

I'm sure MN will be getting reports from many members who don't engage on the board but report regularly from different perspectves. It would be interesting to know if MN are analysing this though.

LaSquirrel · 07/08/2018 13:33

Are MN still taking reports from Twitter, and outsiders (ie non members)? Because that is more than a little crazy - all other forums that I know of, you have to be a forum member to report a comment or thread.
