Scottish schoolkids to be taught to ‘choose their own gender’ in class

According to The Sun: It says that children need to “learn about what we mean by gender, that this is different from the sex we are assigned at birth”, and that “gender is about how we see and present ourselves in the world”.

Here

I’ haven’t seen the new guidance but it will
Become part of the Curriculum for Excellence and is aimed at children between five and nine.

It doesn’t make sense to me. Apparently it starts off explaining to children that girls and boys can all play football and cry etc (hurrah!)

But later will talk
About how we aren’t necessarily the gender we are assigned at birth.

But that doesn’t make sense. If we start out saying that gender stereotypes don’t matter because girls and boys can play football then what is the point of telling children they can choose a gender?

Surely the point is that there IS NO SUCH THING AS GENDER rather than reiterating the stereotypes but tell little kids that they can choose?

Good morning children.
Who can define 'triangle'?
No, Fred, a triangle isn't 'any shape I call a triangle'. Anyone else? Yes, Olivia?
That's right, a triangle is defined as "a shape with three straight sides and three angles."
How is a square different?
Correct Poppy, a square is defined as " a shape with four equal straight sides and four right angles." Well done.
Can you correctly identify the differences between these shapes now children? Of course you can.

Now, who can define 'gender', 'girl' and 'boy', so that we can all choose the one that applies to each of us?

Oh wait, that page seems to be missing from the curriculum...

Because I fit into hardly any female stereotypes beyond having the biological bits and that’s about it. I’m rubbish at the rest of it yet have never queried if I’m a man.

You make a good point, YeTalkShiteHen - I'd be inclined to say the same about myself.

YeTalkShiteHen · 05/08/2018 20:09

Is this a patriarchal reaction to us managing to begin to break down gender stereotypes in the first place?

Genuine question MNHQ, please don’t take me wrong.

TheWomaninTheSturdyPajamas · 05/08/2018 20:07

They'd need to have a list, surely. FINALLY, we'll all know what we're supposed to be doing.

TerfsUp · 05/08/2018 20:03

Ooh! Is Swedish multimillionaire genius supermodel a gender? If so, I've picked mine.

Ta.

thebewilderness · 05/08/2018 19:59

Of all the various lies that adults tell children this may well be the most destructive. Labeling children deviant if they fail to conform to sex role stereotypes is child abuse plain and simple.

leyat · 05/08/2018 18:55

We will be addressing this in the work we do. It is crazy to think you can at once say that gender is social stereotypes and innately what we are. These poor kids. This is basically indoctrinating them. They should not be taught genderist ideologies in schools full stop. The only thing schools should be doing in addition to ensuring they comply with the EA and the PSED is ending stereotyping, something that is clearly objectively harmful. And that's it.

Re Mhairi Black, she is a brilliant politician. She has got it wrong re gender identity though, but she also likes a lot of tweets that would be considered 100% t*. I think she, like most people, doesn't yet really understand/see what is happening.

ijustwannadance · 05/08/2018 18:43

What a ridiculous waste of funding.
Lets go into schools and teach the kids something that is completely unecessary and confusing.
What a fucking joke.

Lucked · 05/08/2018 18:28

it looks like advice rather than a rule.

"It’s for schools to decide how they deliver RSHP education, based on the needs of the children or young people in their classroom.”

So the catholic schools will be giving this a wide berth although I hope they tackle gender stereotypes.

Mossandclover · 05/08/2018 18:15

If you look at the links between the TRAs in the Jess Bradley III thread then it might become more clear what the agenda is.

Flowerylampshade · 05/08/2018 18:12

Fucking glad I don't teach anymore.

Datun · 05/08/2018 18:10

I still want to know how these little kids choose their gender.

Ffs

This is so backwards.

Kids, let's have your toy and clothes choices. Right that means you go in this box.

What is the name of the box? Does it indicate, in any way, whether it's linked to being male or female??

What if my choices don't perfectly align with the box? What if I change my mind?

BACKWARDS.

Agastache · 05/08/2018 17:49

What the unholy fuck do these people think they are doing?

YeTalkShiteHen · 05/08/2018 17:41

Safeguarding is NOT bigotry

Sums up my position on self ID beautifully.

womanspeaking · 05/08/2018 17:39

The problem is that all politicians have been caught on the hop with this and are just too scared to stand up to the bullying.
Under the guise of anti-bullying and anti-discrimination transgender groups have been invited into schools. The trouble is that they are not just talking about acceptance of transgender people. They are challenging the very basis of science and biology and literally gaslighting children into accepting the unacceptable - eroding boundaries and safeguarding all over the place.
Put this alongside the positioning of anyone as a bigot who objects to the penis being a female organ or who is concerned that the rainbow umbrella includes people who should not be allowed anywhere near children or women when they are vulnerable, and we have the perfect storm.
Until and unless politicians are able to front out the bullying TRA / organisations, and firmly insist that children and women are entitled to penis free spaces, there will be real harm happening. Safeguarding is NOT bigotry.

placemats · 05/08/2018 17:24

Sorry I got that wrong. She was describing who was calling her an ugly cunt. Online abuse. In Parliament. Still, even though I've majorly fallen out with the Labour Party, would never countenance the LibDems and might just vote Conservative if the proper person was on board, sadly that doesn't include my constituency, I know of them all, the most sexist and disgusting is the Conservative Party.

Got the same sort of gasps as a woman would if she was breast feeding.

VickyEadie · 05/08/2018 17:19

I like Mhairi Black. I think she's a talented and intelligent person. I believe her attendance record at Westminster was badly affected this past year by illness, for the record.

She's not the only person I admire to have swallowed the transactivist line without seeing the dangers and implications, however.

Mossandclover · 05/08/2018 17:16

Mhairi Black is an MP isn’t she? Scottish Education is determined by Holyrood and MSPs who are in coalition with the Greens. Though the SNP are like the Borg and vote en masse - they represent the party not constituents.

YeTalkShiteHen · 05/08/2018 17:16

She wasn’t called it in Parliament, she used the word in parliament so as not to censor what she faces (and other high profile women) daily.

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 05/08/2018 17:11

Thanks again for the links.

LassWiADelicateAir · 05/08/2018 17:08

Who called her this in Parliament?

Mhairi Black was the first person to use that word in Parliament. I can't find any reference to her being called it in Parliament.

Tinycitrus · 05/08/2018 17:05

I like Mhari Black. I’m sure Westminster is not easy for her and she is very young to
Be navigating this.

The trans issue is a difficult one isn’t it. On the one hand it feels good to be progressive and inclusive and supportive of people who just want to live a certain way. You don’t need to look further than that to feel the warm glow.

But when it comes to what is taught to young children in schools who are just exploring their own identities and don’t understand the difference between sex and gender - then thus idea becomes an article of faith. A dogma.

Mhairi Black was called an 'ugly cunt' in Parliament. No prizes for the sex of the person issuing the slur or the party they belong to.

YeTalkShiteHen · 05/08/2018 16:57

It's as if being able to swear equals being intelligent

Because that’s the only reason anyone would agree with her? That’s pretty narrow minded no?

I agree with her on many points, granted not this one, but I do actually agree with a lot of points she makes and I also like the blunt way she puts them across. Prevarication and obfuscation are all too common in politics.

Tinycitrus · 05/08/2018 16:56
