anyone like to ring and explain they are opting out of organ donation because of claims of TRAs that they will be allowed to have our uteruses?

sociopath I agree entirely. My whole family are very vocal on organ donation because without it a very loved family member wouldn't be alive now. My dh is not massively keen on the idea but entirely understands my wishes and would still donate. Like you say, when you're dead, you're dead! You're not feeling anything anymore. Don't be selfish. Help other people to live an amazing life.

OldCrone · 05/08/2018 12:34

Pretty certain the weirdos that are promoting this stuff will be more interested in wombs removed from healthy young transmen than used ones from us ‘old crone types’...

That is being looked at
Could the female-to-male transgender population be donor candidates for uterus transplantation?
But the recipients are female.

Not pulling that transman donor completely outta my ass, btw.

sociopathsunited · 05/08/2018 12:32

PS I realise I'm going to get flamed and abused fort saying I'd ignore his wishes. I've told him that. If he chooses to opt out, then that's that. If he leaves it ambiguous, I'll choose for him. He knows this.

Wrathofjurgenklop · 05/08/2018 12:29

The HTA raised many questions concerning the boundaries of the use of human tissue kept for medical research, and rightly so.
At the time all types of samples used in pathology departments came under scrutiny. My worry is that the supply of human organs is there for someone with a business plan, here in th UK or elsewhere in the world.

It goes without saying, but I'll say it anyway.
I fully support the excellent research undertaken to advance medical knowledge to save lives. Organ donation is just one of the incredible advances.

sociopathsunited · 05/08/2018 12:29

barefoot that's an argument I have with husband. He's not a donor because he doesn't like needles. WTF? You're DEAD!!!! So I asked him if he'd recieve a kidney if he needed one and it stopped him in his tracks, because the answer, he realised, was yes.

He still hasn't signed up, but when opt out comes in, I will not be supporting him making the effort to opt out. Nor will I say that his wishes were to opt out if something happened now. I will not sit and let him be a hypocrite.

Bowlofbabelfish · 05/08/2018 12:28

There’s nowhere to plumb it in to. The womb isn’t just floating around - it’s attached to support ligaments etc and supplied by arteries and veins and nerves. Technically I guess you could shove bits and bobs aside to make an actual cavity but it’s all the supply and support that’s missing. This ain’t going to happen any time soon so PLEASE don’t remove yourself from the organ donor register because of it.

Nobody is going to be implanting wombs into men any time soon. What IS important and DOES need discussion is why these demands are being made, how this small vocal group of activists see women as objects to be used and harvested and how this trampling of women’s rights is happening across multiple fields at once. That’s the important stuff. What this shows up about their views of women.

FloralBunting · 05/08/2018 12:28

I'm not on the organ register and will be opting out of the new system. I fundamentally disagree with changing the relationship between the authorities and the citizens so that the voluntary gift element of donation is lost, and the government presumes that they own you.

However, I would never discourage anyone else from doing what their conscience dictates, and would only underline that everyone really needs to have the conversation with their family so their wishes are known and clear.

The ethical debate about a hypothetical use of transplant technology is really not a good idea to make a central plank of any argument about TRA influence.

Oh, and screenshotters gleefully making hay with this thread, be aware that a disagreement about this issue proves nothing except that you have created an atmosphere where women are so scared of your intentions they worry about wild scenarios like this.

Clairetree1 · 05/08/2018 12:27

you criticised a poster who has worked with disadvantaged women for 20 years for not volunteering to help them in her free time.

no I didn't, I asked her how much see volunteered and the answer was zero.

Why does wanting men to be treated fairly mean I don't want women to be treated fairly?

why can't everybody be treated fairly?

And said that straight white men were being disadvantaged by feminists. Very odd.

Jesus. The name is familiar. Haven't AS'd but I am pretty sure I have seen the OP post idiocy on other topics.

Bingpot · 05/08/2018 12:24

I am somewhat distrustful of the OP given their comments on the latter half of the 'Can men be feminists?' thread.

You don't really seem the type to be GC given how odd your attitudes to women you are. And before you claim false, you criticised a poster who has worked with disadvantaged women for 20 years for not volunteering to help them in her free time. And said that straight white men were being disadvantaged by feminists. Very odd.

BarefootHippieChick · 05/08/2018 12:23

My opinion is, everyone is entitled to make their own choice, but frankly, if you choose not to donate then you shouldn't be allowed to receive either. (Obviously if you are unable to donate for medical reasons then that's completely different. )

sociopathsunited · 05/08/2018 12:23

Question about the physical characteristics of an xx body compared to an xy.....its not like there is a gap inside the xy abdomen where a womb might have gone, is there? I have vague memories of biology at school and am under the impression that the xy torso is happily filled with organs. No empty holes.

What would they remove in order to squeeze in a uterus, hypothetically? A few feet of bowel? Half the liver? Or is it supposed to just slot in nicely with no objections and no inconvenience to the xy tissue and organs, like xx stuff always is?

Bronners78 · 05/08/2018 12:21

My other question, would you also opt out of organ transplant to deny me, for example a kidney if I needed it?

PeakPants · 05/08/2018 12:17

we have a health service that has just been ordered to offer fertility treatment to transpeople or face legal consequences

Wrong. A human rights watchdog expressed its opinion that the current practice was unfair. It doesn't mean the NHS has been ordered to do anything at all.

Also, they were talking about egg-freezing and sperm donation and stuff like that, not womb transplants. They already offer those services to people having medical treatment that will make them infertile. I don't think it's top priority personally but we are not talking womb transplants on any level.

On behalf of anyone with a family member who is in need of a transplant, I beg you not to try to put people off donation. From your posts, it's obvious that you don't have a clue.

I don’t like the idea that a woman’s womb could be experimented on, in order to pacify the TRA fruit loops

Organ donation is not the same as leaving your body to medical science. Being on the organ donor register does not mean your body will be used in lab research.

PeakPants · 05/08/2018 12:07

personally, I don't think it will be possible, but that is not the point

TRAs insisting that it is possible and they will do it is making women not want to be organ donars

I can't even begin to explain how utterly stupid this makes you sound. According to the NHS website, someone dies every day waiting for an organ. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO TRANSPLANT WOMBS TO MEN EVEN IF THE NHS OFFERED WOMB TRANSPLANTS WHICH THEY DON'T. How much clearer do you want it to be? Should I try to put people off donation because I think the government will steal my brain and transplant it into UKIP-supporters?

This thread has made me really angry. My friend has a son with cystic fibrosis and he will need a transplant in the future. The thought of anyone even suggesting that women should opt out of something as important as this due to some idiotic claim by TRAs is just mind-boggling.

PositivelyPERF · 05/08/2018 12:06

I’m sure everyone knows it’s not possible, but it’s the attitude of the creepy fuckers, that people have an issue with. I don’t like the idea that a woman’s womb could be experimented on, in order to pacify the TRA fruit loops. We have a health service that is pandering to the TRAs and letting men on female wards, so we know they will keep feeding the men’s egos.

TacoLover · 05/08/2018 12:02

Don't phone in unless you want to make us all look unhingedGrin

What's the point of taking yourself off a register which can save multiple lives for something that isn't even scientifically possible yetConfused

Bowlofbabelfish · 05/08/2018 12:02

jurgen I don’t know how this would affect the HTA. It’s a valid question to ask.

A lot of VERY important and valuable medical research is done using human tissue. The rules for using it are very strict and the researchers who use it are aware of the privilege it is and how altruistic donors are. I have worked in the past with people looking at Intrauterine growth restriction, multiple types of cancer (I’ve used human breast tissue preps myself) and one of my best friends works on blood cancers and uses donor tissue.

It is important that people are given the opportunity to opt IN to such things and I would hate for this to reduce the number of organ donors.

Opt out I disagree with - on a visceral level. Any work of this kind has to be informed and voluntary

PositivelyPERF · 05/08/2018 12:02

It’s a shame womb implants weren’t possible, when I had my hysterectomy. I would have been delighted to donate my womb to one of them. They could have really know what it was like to ‘feel like a woman’. Yup. They could have had the agony of endometriosis and a ovarian cyst. The ignorant pricks would have been welcome to my womb.

PeakPants · 05/08/2018 11:57

Man, please do NOT phone in, anyone who is tempted. Way to make the GC movement look totally unhinged.
First off, nobody should be discouraged to opt out of organ donation- it is a vital lifeline for many with serious illnesses. Anyone trying to encourage people to come off the list should give their head a wobble.
Second, wombs are NOT on the list of organs that they take anyway. The NHS does not offer womb transplants.
Third, there has been NO successful case of implanting a womb into a natal male body. It will literally not happen in our lifetime and I would venture to say, ever.

Wrathofjurgenklop · 05/08/2018 11:51

Medical Ethics? There will always be groups that push the boundaries.

The financial gain fron a technological and physiological breakthrough is immense.
Many of us have a gut feeling about this.
We should listen to it.

Like Babelfish, I also carry a donor card.
Purely voluntarily.
