Labour councillor quits in row over facilities for trans people - The Times

Anne Sinnot, Labour councillor (Cambridge) has resigned.

"Ann Sinnott stood down from Cambridge council claiming that the authority was treating women with contempt and was acting in “dereliction of the law”. She said a policy that resulted in single-sex facilities, such as toilets or changing rooms, being “abolished at a stroke” was undermining women’s rights and was a breach of the equality act."

I don't have a clicky link or share token. Hopefully someone else will add?

I’m so glad to hear that. We are all behind you.

Onwhitehorses · 03/08/2018 11:59

Mmm I get that Ann, but still worth fighting all the same. It's the beginning of a slippery slope.

AnnMSinnott · 03/08/2018 11:58

LemonJello. Fight continues.

AnnMSinnott · 03/08/2018 11:58

See my comment elsewhere - in Cambridge it is far more than using incorrect terms for ES2010 protected characteristics.

LemonJello · 03/08/2018 11:58

Ann! Thank you so much for taking a stand for women FlowersFlowersFlowers

You are an incredibly brave and principled woman.

Can I ask, do you have plans to continue to fight this?

Onwhitehorses · 03/08/2018 11:56

Have emailed Derbyshire County Council multiple times about claiming gender is a protected characteristic on their website. Not ever had the courtesy of a reply. If you feel like joining me emailing them, please do.

Hi (waves)
Not here for long though. Just want to make sure you all have accurate knowledge about what's going down.

AnnMSinnott · 03/08/2018 11:55

Bespin That was an error by the journalist/subeditor. The numbers relate to only those with GRC, not 'Transgender'.

EmpressOfSpartacus · 03/08/2018 11:53

Welcome to MN, AnnMSinnott!

Really good to see you here.

Popchyk · 03/08/2018 11:53

Hi Ann,

Brilliant to have you here.

Agastache · 03/08/2018 11:52

Ann.

Respect.

AnnMSinnott · 03/08/2018 11:52

Thanks! - perhaps identify yourself via another forum?

Am only here - Hello Everyone - to provide info and to correct faulty understandings.

AnnMSinnott · 03/08/2018 11:49

Yes it's incorrect use of terms for EA2010 protected characteristics: Gender instead of 'Sex'. Transgender and/or Gender identity instead of 'Gender reassignment' (in GRA2004 the term is Transsexual'). This was true for many other local authorities, most quickly acted to rectify.

In Cambridge, there was an actual amendment to existing Equality policy, which plunged the council into inequality:

"Transgender people will not be excluded from gender-appropriate single sex/single sex segregated facilities operated by the council."

What do you find funny about DonkeySkin's post?

Is it funny that people suffering from gender dysphoria are not given any psychiatric help and are just given hormones and surgery?

Is it funny that children who are confused about gender issues are given medication which will permanently change their bodies, rather than sympathetic counselling?

Is it funny that women and girls are going to have to accept men in places which should be exclusively female?

I can't find anything funny in DonkeySkin's post. Please enlighten me.

OlennasWimple

"Women, don't worry your pretty little heads about this stuff, there's no need to be concerned. Now run along and let the men get on with the important stuff"

Hilariously (or not), this is almost word for word the reply I got from Labour's Daniel Zeichner (Cambridge) a few months ago, after raising concerns.

Only got halfway through this thread, so now back to reading. It's encouraging and depressing in equal measure...

Oops

Nice to know there are some people out there I could honourably vote for. Well I could if she hadn't just resigned and was in my area. But they exist!

MipMipMip · 01/08/2018 14:56

Ooh what did the OOO say?

BettyDuMonde · 01/08/2018 13:51

I’m loving the news that she set herself an ‘out of office’ auto email response before resigning (according to the Cambridge news site I read).

Shero of the week!
