Horrible news story - acid attack on 3 year old

So, the horrible news story about an acid attack on a three year old child. I can't be the only one who thought his dad or step-dad would be behind it? How sad is that? My assumption when I first heard about the story was that the dad would be punishing the mother. I know, I know - not all men etc but ffs!

The entire justice system needs to be rebuilt with the reality of male pattern violence and the near-certainty of repeat offending in mind.

Sloth, I completely agree!

YerAuntFanny · 27/07/2018 07:24

It's been "confirmed" (as accurate as media confirmation can be I guess) that there are 5 men involved.

3 Slovakian, 1 Afghan and the father who, speculation suggests, is also Afghan.

Coyoacan · 27/07/2018 04:41

Afghan ‘assylum’ Seekers I believe.

I googled this case and the article I read referred to another non-muslim ethnic group. Does anyone know for sure? Please don't use this horrible case to inflame racism

newtlover · 26/07/2018 23:02

you are confusing culture with race, Gaspode
it sounds like this was a man who was angry that 'his' wife had escaped his control, so he punished her by hurting their child
if you think that reaction is limited to any particular race you are very naive
it's culture, patriarchal culture, that varies slightly in it's expression from one social group to another, and fundamentally is about men controlling women

YerAuntFanny · 26/07/2018 22:49

My immediate thought was that the Father had accidentally caught the child with acid rather than the Mother.

Of course, this type of "revenge" crime is never acceptable but somehow it makes it easier to digest if I imagine that no one actually intended to hurt an innocent child.

AncientLights · 26/07/2018 22:38

I haven't been following this horrific case (TRAs favourite adjective, but accurate in this case unlike their usage), but it is very easy to get stuff that will cause serious damage. Oven cleaner will do it. I've been spending womanly weekends togged up in goggles, breathing masks & gauntlets stripping paint with Nitromors. Swallowing that=multi-organ failure.

Gaspodethetalkingdog · 26/07/2018 14:54

It was in the Times today - she was being ‘punished’ for appearing on the TV without a veil. All you ‘racist’ shouting people defending this?

AWomanIsAnAdultHumanFemale · 26/07/2018 13:03

I don't think it is a race problem, just like I don't think its a male problem. The stats for these sort of attacks support neither. It's everyone's problem.

Men hurting their children to get at the mother is a male problem. (Well it’s a female and child problem as they are the ones that actually suffer) The fact he chose acid to do it is another issue, but men hurting children is a thing.

WaxOnFeckOff · 26/07/2018 13:00

Lichie, neither of those scenarios are the case in this crime but I do hear you and I agree it has become everyones problem.

nocoolnamesleft · 26/07/2018 13:00

As soon as I heard how young the victim was, I just knew the father was going to have been involved. Isn't that bloody depressing? To mutilate one's own child in order to punish the mother for a perceived slight? How fucking appalling. And how fucking appallingly predictable. I'm not saying acid attacks are all male violence. But injuring/killing your children specifically to punish your ex? Overwhelmingly male.

FermatsTheorem · 26/07/2018 12:59

But the point is that this attack was not gang-related, it was specifically connected to DV - and pouring acid over your own child as a way of getting back at your wife having the effrontery to leave a violent relationship is a highly male crime.

You do get the occasional female "family annihilator" but they are very, very rare. The vast majority of parents who carry out acts of violence or murder against children in order to "get revenge" on an absent spouse are overwhelmingly male.

Lichtie · 26/07/2018 12:55

I don't think it is a race problem, just like I don't think its a male problem. The stats for these sort of attacks support neither. It's everyone's problem.

Most of these attacks are by young people in gangs. I think I read 30% of attackers were female, and over 50% overall were white.

WaxOnFeckOff · 26/07/2018 12:44

I think it IS a race problem. Well a religious problem within a male problem. We need to stop shying away from calling it out. It doesn't mean that all people in that religion agree with this behaviour any more than it means all men do. Pretending that it isn't a factor of this particular crime is not helpful.

HolyPieter · 26/07/2018 12:24

Racist much, Gaspode?

This is a MALE problem, not a race one.

Gaspodethetalkingdog · 26/07/2018 12:18

Afghan ‘assylum’ Seekers I believe.

AWomanIsAnAdultHumanFemale · 26/07/2018 12:13

I knew straight away it would have been the father or someone acting for him. I just knew.

What is pissing me off is lots of comments on social media saying “he’s not a man” “a real man wouldn’t do this”

Bullshit. It is always men, real men, actual men that live with us, commute with us, drink with us, serve us in shops. This is men. People need to stop pretending this isn’t a man thing.

SlothSlothSloth · 26/07/2018 12:02

None of the people involved in this will get the life sentences they so obviously need in order to keep women and children (and likely other men) safe from them. They will probably be out within a few years.

The entire justice system needs to be rebuilt with the reality of male pattern violence and the near-certainty of repeat offending in mind.

FermatsTheorem · 26/07/2018 12:00

Sadly, when I first read about this and early reports said that the police had ruled out racism or gang-related crime as possible motives, my immediate next thought was "oh, that means it'll have been the father." It makes me so bloody angry that we're simply not taking domestic violence seriously as a society.

Juells · 26/07/2018 11:31

'fractious'. What a ridiculous word to use.

AveABanana · 26/07/2018 11:18

I've read so many reports that the mother was fleeing a "fractious relationship" or wanted to make a fresh start - not one where they directly that she had escaped domestic abuse. Is that because of potential prejudice in the trial? Because it's pretty offensive otherwise.

Iused2BanOptimist · 26/07/2018 11:12

It was always going to be an angry ex.

Digressing slightly - WHY is this stuff still available for people to get hold of?
Ok my chemistry A level was a long time ago but anyway, I honestly wouldn't know what to buy or where to get it from. (OK five minutes with google would probably enlighten me). Is it for sale in general DIY stores or suppliers? Is it for plumbers to clear drains or mechanics topping up car batteries or something? Because I've lived quite a long time without EVER needing to buy acid.

I know we have crap politicians etc but why don't they go for the occasional non controversial quick win and ban this stuff from sale except for tradespeople with a genuine use who purchase it through their company with special permission, all traceable? Apart from anything else there have been so many of these attacks it must be costing the NHS a fortune in plastic surgery depts.

Maybe they get it on the dark web or something and would continue to do so but Banning it would be a start.

lola212121 · 26/07/2018 10:54

@Freespeecher we don't know the motives for sure

Freespeecher · 26/07/2018 10:52

Wasn't the reason for the attack that she was seen on TV without a veil?

Pretty thin grounds for such an extreme attack.

FlippinFumin · 26/07/2018 08:15

It is amazing the number of things that will never happen that actually happen eh boatyard Hmm

boatyardblues · 26/07/2018 08:14

They had sought safety at a refuge apparently.

Sadly this case amply demonstrates the lengths some men will go to in order to further their abuse of their partners and children. I had assumed a familial link when I heard about the distances involved. Of course, “this never happens” and there are no circumstances whatsoever when an ex-partner would exploit a loophole in the law to accesss a vulnerable woman or child. Hmm
