Is transgenderism a cult?

I normally give anything that might have a hint of a conspiracy theory about it a wide berth.

So I'm wondering what others think of this essay by Jenn Smith, who is (by his own definition) a trans identified male.

I find many of the arguments compelling and the only area where I might part company is in the suggestion that for people like Trudeau this is some part of a bigger plan. I think Trudeau is just painfully woke.

foxyliz26 It sounds like your client is dealing with a lot of ‘closet’ homosexuals. They can sleep with a man while kidding themselves that it’s ok because they present as a woman. Though a woman smells and tastes completely differently from a man, even if the man is post op, so I’m surprised they don’t notice that obvious detail. 🤔

Gncq · 14/07/2018 08:38

Yes it is a cult.

Starkstaring · 14/07/2018 08:07

It's a cultish ideology that feeds off some sort of zeitgeist.

Just remember that actual trained medical professionals are surgically altering and making lifelong medical patients of vulnerable people in support of the ideology.

Bespin · 14/07/2018 08:02

to be honest I thought I did well I was quite drunk last night after a staff do. lol

The hysteria and mob violence surrounding raising concerns and questioning the necessity for extra legislation is untoward - especially when the general move is to minimise and simplify law. It really is.

And the silence of the home secretary to a bomb threat in her constituency plus the bystander bullying of many in public life shows them up for the cowards they are.

By not standing up when one sees injustice, one condones it. So many people are disappointing in their lack of balls

thebewilderness · 14/07/2018 04:29

No debate.
No questions.
No desisters.
Bomb threats for the heretics.
Sometimes it is hard to tell the difference between a religion and a cult.
I suppose most religions started as cults, the ones that didn't start as internal power struggles.

The question in my mind is always the same.
Can you mandate belief?
Can you codify a belief system into law?
It has been done before. It never ends well for the people or the government.

womanformallyknownaswoman · 14/07/2018 04:18

Asking questions is a basis for discussion and learning.

Ridiculing those asking the questions and those sharing their experience is bullying and domineering. "Dad knows best and if Dad doesn't know, the rest of you had better shut up for Dad's fear of being shown up".

If one can't listen to dissenting voices then one can never hear the truth of the world.

I remember the day I was initiated. Got my robe, mask and handbook.

Don't be stupid.

womanformallyknownaswoman · 14/07/2018 03:40

Nothing like a bit of word salad to spice up the thread /s

LassWiADelicateAir · 14/07/2018 02:36

That one works along similar lines to people who police their own swearing because they think it makes them look coarse or common - its a form of mind control, and it limits free thinking and freedom of emotional response
.
what absolute tosh

Seconded as to what absolute tosh that comment is.

Bespin · 14/07/2018 02:05

is gender critical feminism a cult?

it ticks most of the boxes that poeple have been holding up.
no of course its not a cult and neither is trans FFS. appropriating the word cult which as a very specific meaning for a who class of poeple is not painting your debate in a good light. but by all means keep linking to auxk things that go totally tin hat by the end as this can only reinforce the view that it's conspiracy theorists.

Most of the transgender organizations tick all the cult check boxes.
They are even beginning to select leaders who must not be questioned.
The only box they had previously not ticked.

ALittleBitofVitriol · 13/07/2018 23:31

UpstartCrow

Where are the studies on detransitioners? How have TRA's reacted to the suggestion it should be studied?
Someone posted a video recently that purports to be a critique of Fair Play for Women, and they were scathing at the fact they had a a link to 'detransition'.

There's your cult behaviour.

Don't forget how detransitioners were banned from the Philadelphia trans health conference. And how any detransitioner gets the 'no true trans' treatment...

The letter sent out by Labour's LGBT (sic) group (read about it in this thread) to the people who signed a perfectly reasonable letter printed in the Morning Star, asking for dialogue and for women to be able to talk about issues without being threatened:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3305189-LGBT-Labour-sending-out-Orwellian-letters-to-Morning-Star-letter-signatories?pg=1

Looks a wee bit cultish to me.

Ereshkigal · 13/07/2018 19:33

It's definitely a cult.

When a guy can tweet about the pain of his terrible unacknowledged periods and PMT, and thousands of impressionable desperate-to-be-woke young people thank him for educating them, that they had no idea of THE AGONY OF MAN-PERIODS and retweeting it to their own networks, what the fuck else can we call it?

Yes.

Ereshkigal · 13/07/2018 19:18

Thanks to the likes of you, mumsnet won't let me describe myself as see-eye-ess, even though I am. I am not allowed to describe Trans Exclusionary Radical you-know-whats in a simpler way than I have done.

Oh no! Shock how inconvenient for you that you can't neatly dismiss and slur women you don't agree with.

Imnobody4 · 13/07/2018 17:51

I can't help feeling there's an element of displacement and existential anxiety involved. I can't remember any movement so obsessively self absorbed. The amount of energy going into defining your precise, unique gender identity is breathtaking. Meanwhile democracy and western civilisation collapses.

ReluctantCamper · 13/07/2018 17:13

No reply from @AuntMsVanillaRose I see

when they came back I had high hopes that they were going to explain the reasoning behind spraying insults around

but no, turns out they are a member of the eurgh transphobes brigade after all

god those people are tiresome

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 13/07/2018 17:03

That's a bloody brilliant article. Thanks for posting it, Macareux. Absolutely fascinating.

Marking my place to read this properly when I get home

LookTwoFingers · 13/07/2018 13:39

A belief system requires faith, allows questions, your own interpretation of ideological text and personal individual relationship with a higher being.

womanformallyknownaswoman · 13/07/2018 13:29

People who actively seek this out maybe do it for different reasons and tend to be the ones who end up in the power wielding positions?

What a depressing world sad

yep, unfortunately - once seen it's hard to unsee and hard to think there are enough good people around sometimes. Hence why here and forums like it are so important. We are the voice of sanity and reason.

I feel for your friend - yes illness is another vulnerable point as unfortunately is exiting from DV - many women get recruited by cult-like churches where I am, after coming out of DV and desperately looking for a good community. Many are asset stripped. It's insidious stuff and largely ignored by police etc as it's the mind control and grooming which somehow is downplayed and dismissed in adults - as though they deserve what they get :(

The Cluster Bs are the worse type of abuser - these have psychopathic tendencies so know how to hide and keep within the letter of the law if not the spirit and they are the ones who end up in power. They need to be limited as they know no limits themselves.

The denial of detransitioners is interesting to me from a cult perspective. Christianish cults often talk about people who have left the cult in the terms "They went out from us, because they were not really one of us to begin with".
