And apparently, later in the thread, the reason we don't talk about transmen as much as transwomen is that feminism is not about the men.

JFC my head hurts.

FFS, do these self obsessed ninnies wake up in the morning and think "What outrageous statement can I say today to make it more about MEEEEEE?"
Get off bloody Twitter and go do some useful work!

Bowlofbabelfish · 09/07/2018 08:50

I’m a new scientist subscriber- will be responding to that one when I feel up to it ...

LaSqrrl · 09/07/2018 08:50

Awww look, I screencapped it. So bespin cannot change their mind on the intersex co-opting thing.

Locked you down lovey!
So do please make a note somewhere not to appropriate intersex again.

Indeed Ofew. Takes a particularly special attitude to look at women’s issues around medical treatment in childbirth and decide that the really coercive and violent bit is when the midwife sees a penis and says “boy”.

starcrossedseahorse · 09/07/2018 08:45

Twitter at the moment is a cesspit of hatred for women being paraded around like a badge of honour.
There are too many people who believe this crap. We must challenge wherever we can.

We are under threat from this cult-like ideology and we must fight back.

LaSqrrl · 09/07/2018 08:44

totally agree Bowlofbabelfish Intersex conditions say nothing about being transgender. Thanks for making this clearer

Good, does that mean we will hear no more from you co-opting intersex conditions for transgender political point? Because that would be swell.

hackmum · 09/07/2018 08:41

Does anyone subscribe to the New Scientist? I receive regular emails from them about articles, and one the other day began:

"How to think about… Gender
"At first it seems straightforward. After a brief inspection of its genitals, a baby is assigned a gender. But look more closely, and this simple idea begins to unravel.

"Society thinks men are more active than women, and women are better talkers, for example – but biology suggests there is no clear distinction between male and female brains. How much of our gender identity is related nature or nurture?"

Very disappointing to see a publication like the New Scientist talking about a baby being "assigned" a gender! I clicked through, and the first few paras looked a bit more sensible, but I couldn't read the rest of the article.

LaSqrrl · 09/07/2018 08:39

But hey, never mind about the real violence going on in labour wards. Let's talk about some made up nonsense instead.

Ah yes, that old 'qualified medical observation and paperwork' thingy, ever so 'literal violence'.

TRAs, you sound like dickweeds with the 'coercively assigned' bullshit. Nice peak transing of the regular population though, well done!

coercively and violently assigned male at birth

Yeah, the newborn is slapped on the bottom by the midperson and if it cries, is declared to be male.

Bespin · 09/07/2018 08:22

totally agree Bowlofbabelfish Intersex conditions say nothing about being transgender.

Thanks for making this clearer

Bespin · 09/07/2018 08:20

hi Ofew sorry that sentence would make more sence by adding the Babies don't have a gender because they are babies and haven't yet been socialised into a gender. bit to the end of it like. you say thank you for that. hope it clarified see working together we can do this

Bowlofbabelfish · 09/07/2018 08:19

People assign baby's a sex at birth mostly that matches the gender which they can not know and sometimes the sex unclear or wrong in the case of some intersex people

No they don’t.

Nobody is assigned a sex at birth.

A baby’s sex is observed at birth.

If there is any doubt at all, there is a mechanism for delaying reporting until genetic and physical investigation has taken place.

Intersex people are not some sort of unknowable ‘in between.’ The vast majority of those with DSD conditions are easily observed to be one sex or the other at birth. Again if any doubt genetic testing.

Intersex conditions say nothing about being transgender.

Ofew · 09/07/2018 08:16

Bespin
People assign baby's a sex at birth mostly that matches the gender which they can not know

Do you seriously believe this? Babies don't have a gender because they are babies and haven't yet been socialised into a gender.

TRA would have us believe theirs is a progressive movement, but the really progressive thing to say about new born babies is "baby's sex is observed as being (e.g.) male. Let's bring him up so he is not bound by gender rules of any sort.

Ofew · 09/07/2018 08:08

Obstetric violence is a thing. But it's not this. Women in childbirth experience human rights abuses and literal violence (of the real violence kind) very frequently - procedures being carried out without consent for example. This goes largely unremarked on (save the work of charities like Birthrights).

But hey, never mind about the real violence going on in labour wards. Let's talk about some made up nonsense instead.

Moonkissedlegs · 09/07/2018 08:01

At least he is peak transing people!

Transwomen were 'coercively and violently' assigned male at birth.
Bespin · 09/07/2018 08:00

sometimes we don't help ourselves now do we. I can see what she's trying to say but the language you choose makes the difference. People assign baby's a sex at birth mostly that matches the gender which they can not know and sometimes the sex unclear or wrong in the case of some intersex people for who this is a issue and I would not. wish to appropriate there fight but support it.

MsBeee · 09/07/2018 07:58

No no that’s really good. Violently assigned at birth.

What about all the girl pregnancys terminated just because they are the female sex. Do that in India and China there is now a serious imbalance of the sexes.

Oh silly me, if they had identified as men in the womb they would have been ok.

UpstartCrow · 09/07/2018 07:56

How does placating men help 'overcome heteropatriarchy'? Or anything?

Babdoc · 09/07/2018 07:50

I’ve never worked with a midwife who says “ Congratulations, I’m assigning this one a boy!”
Babies aren’t assigned anything. They simply ARE boys or girls.
So called trans women are men who don’t like and don’t fit in with the artificial gender stereotype of masculinity imposed by the patriarchy. Good for them. They should help us women to fight all social gender nonsense. They should just be happy as men who happen to like dresses or long hair or whatever. But no, instead they try to claim, with no basis in biology or reality, that they are somehow “women”. That they “feel like” women. How would they know what women feel? All women are different. Men have no idea what even one woman feels, let alone a whole sex. And then, as typical entitled domineering men, they demand the right to take over women’s sport, toilets, refuges, changing rooms, etc.
This is not acceptable to the majority of women. And we need consulted before any attemot to legislate for this takeover.

TallulahWaitingInTheRain · 09/07/2018 07:48

Nope. They are often coercively and violently indoctrinated into masculinity during their formative years but if that's a problem for you you should be on our side you numpties

Moonkissedlegs · 09/07/2018 07:38

I read that tweet and just think 'oh just shut the fuck up'

'Coercively and violently assigned male at birth'?

I don't know...again it feels a bit misogynist. Women give birth, they are not coercive or violent about it, most of the time it's a rather beautiful thing. It feels like another way to take something from that?

Plus it feels a bit 'first world problems' as well. I know there are still issues in obstetrics in our society, but giving birth round these parts is, both historically and geographically the least 'coercive and violent' its ever been. Most babies get through birth OK.

So saying that observing the sex of a newborn is 'coercive and violent'.......... get a grip, you don't know you are born (literally)!

Alltheprettyseahorses · 09/07/2018 07:35

I'm guessing they don't know about scans then.
