And apparently, later in the thread, the reason we don't talk about transmen as much as transwomen is that feminism is not about the men.

JFC my head hurts.

I just watched a Travis Alabanza Ted talk where they talk about it being "assigned without consent", so really comparing being sexed to being raped, or at least using similar terms.

Sex isn't recorded without consent or violently or coercively.

It's just recorded. Observed as the fact it is.

Surely the only violence, coercive or without consent things around that are due to then being forced into a box by your immediate surroundings. If your family and world view isn't restricted or manipulated due to your observed sex, where is the violence?

CisMyArse · 05/11/2018 20:40

Not RTFT but look how many likes it's had. God - how utterly depressing that people actually believe this rubbish.

To continue your point, JungDisciple, if midwives 'know' who is trans (or maybe it's easier to say know the baby's gender) then how do they know it? Is it based on some scientific test or is it a feeling/intuition? With trans ideology being what it is, I'd plump for the latter. So if midwives know this, how do they know it? Maybe it can be learned, in which case we could surely all learn it. Or are midwives really the dangerous creatures described all those years ago in 'Malleus Maleficarum'?

Whatever. This ex-midwife knows that external genitalia are a very good guide to sex in the vast majority of cases and that the gender bollox starts with the pink & blue cards, presents, nurseries etc that we seem so in love with now.

JungDisciple · 04/11/2018 10:25

They think the midwives should have known they were going to become trans?! What about the 99% of the rest of the population who want their sex correctly recorded

Mookatron · 16/07/2018 18:58

No problem. I think we agree.

It is a shame that there's such conflict between transpeople and feminists who ultimately - I think - want the same thing: i.e. to be allowed to behave as they wish, not be controlled by what social norms say about gender etc.

I think we're concentrating on individual behaviour without questioning the norms that cause it, when those are the very things we should be disputing.

HairyStorm · 16/07/2018 18:45

I wasn't meaning to be patronising, just pointing out that agreeing that gender is constructed doesn't cause any difficulty in knowing what a woman is if you accept the standard dictionary definition of the word.

Yes, the words for adult human females and adult human males are loaded with gender assumptions. Hence the ongoing attempt by feminists to decouple the word woman from the feminine gender.

Apologies for implying you yourself were ignorant of the difference between sex and gender. But there is a widespread lack of understanding of what that difference is, from which a great deal of the madness stems.

Mookatron · 16/07/2018 10:39

Well that was patronising. I'm well aware of the difference between female and feminine, thanks.

The terms 'woman' and 'man' are loaded with gender assumptions and do not equate to 'Female' and 'male'.

We need to talk about the features of what it is to be a woman or a man before we talk about reassigning gender because we will find that the problem lies in those features and definitions, not in biology (for the most part).

HairyStorm · 15/07/2018 23:36

the trouble is that if you agree that gender is a construct then what even is a woman?

Easy.

A woman is an adult human female.

You've fallen for the lie that "woman" and "man" are genders, and that this is something separate from their sex.

Women are humans of the female sex. The gender usually assigned to them is the feminine gender.

Woman is not a gender.

Equating woman with feminine is sexism 101.

Mainstream understanding of basic feminist principles is totally arse about face these days. It makes me want to weep.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 15/07/2018 16:54

I'm just astonished that people who are so aggressively entitled and often so aggressive can also be such fucking snowflakes.

Quite, Dance. They're only too keen to dish it out but get incredibly angry if anyone even slightly dissents from their claims.

bellinisurge · 15/07/2018 07:59

I didn't dress my female baby in pink stuff with "Mummy's little pwincess" on it. My mum didn't for me either.
I don't force my dd to do "girl stuff" whatever that is.
But she is a girl and I am a woman. We do the things we enjoy doing. And no one forces either of us.

ALittleBitofVitriol · 15/07/2018 04:40

Gileswithachainsaw

So how were these babies conceived and born in the first place?

Ah, you clearly haven't been indoctrinated with the horrific Queer Kid Stuff YouTube channel. Here's how they explain reproduction - hint, random disembodied reproductive organs!

Mummyoflittledragon · 15/07/2018 04:38

Shame on this transwoman for so disrespecting her mother and the midwives, who cared for her, and her mother during her pregnancy, birth and post partum.

There is nothing womanly in this dialogue.

OlennasWimple · 15/07/2018 03:31

Trigger warning This article talks about actual violence in the delivery suite Angry

thebewilderness · 15/07/2018 02:16

Sometimes the fact that Genderism is an exercise in creating a supra class of narcissists that must be prioritized at all times becomes very obvious.

RedToothBrush · 14/07/2018 18:13

When are the midwife arrests going to start? Arrested for causing years of torture through misgendering.

I suspect that some would like this to happen because that means there are less midwives to look after all the men giving birth.

Oh. Wait.

Bingpot · 14/07/2018 17:57

I mean, it really explains why the TRAs are fond of the phrase #nodebate. How can you have a debate with such obtuse, irrational thinking? Such a willingness to misinterpret basic words, basic science?

Mookatron · 14/07/2018 16:01

I actually understand what this person is trying to say - but the trouble is that if you agree that gender is a construct then what even is a woman? What is it about being a woman that this person is if they have been brought up male/masculine? That's the question we have to answer before we start reassigning gender, IMO.

Pratchet · 14/07/2018 15:50

For everyone's enjoyment, including Bespin, who I hope will get the joke

ILoveDolly · 14/07/2018 15:13

I think there is an argument for the egalitarian treatment of babies, and moving towards less gender specific treatment of small children but like a lot of things said now by TRAs, there is no real connection to real world. Ok. What should we do instead of look at genital formation. Babies don't have any sort of self identity at birth apart from what others can observe.

Igneococcus · 11/07/2018 15:48

"How to think about… Gender
At first it seems straightforward. After a brief inspection of its genitals, a baby is assigned a gender. But look more closely, and this simple idea begins to unravel."

From a New Scientist mail I received this week. So depressing.

PersonWithAVulva · 11/07/2018 15:30

The only people who are 'coercively and violently assigned a sex at birth' would be intersex people who were operated on when born. I believe this does not happen now, and I fucking well hope it doesn't, but to imply that this happens to trans people too, rather than the doctor just acknowledging the sex of the baby...well its bloody nonsense. As usual.

mmmgoats · 09/07/2018 13:32

@slothslothsloth I daren't read it, it won’t be good for my blood pressure

beldaran · 09/07/2018 13:01

Crikey, we'd best arrest all those coercive and violent midwives and doctors for child abuse then! Of and let not forget the sonographers too!

They are all terribly guilty of committing literal violence......Hmm

SlothSlothSloth · 09/07/2018 12:31

I am familiar with the TW who wrote that tweet... she wrote “Gender Nihilsm”, an academic text much discussed in the trans twitter world (though significantly less, I would imagine, within actual academia). If you google it you can read it, but be warned that you’ll want to tear your hair out within minutes...
