Why are these men so contemptuous about lesbians' and women's rights? And what the fuck do they imagine it has to do with them?

More to the point, Stephen Fry is male himself - he will have much more empathy for trans women than for lesbians

This. It's also interesting that he brought intersex into it, it's very clear who Stephen listens to.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 08/07/2018 18:40

'Stephen Fry is gay himself - he will have much more empathy for the hate and transphobia trans women experience every day than for transphobic lesbians trying to hijack pride over a few Tweets they've found online about a female penis.'

Lesbians get an awful lot of shit still, from both homophobes in general and misogynistic gay men. Absolutely no surprise that Fry is neither aware of nor bothered about the attacks on lesbians, but it ain't a sign of his tremendous empathy.

Wanderabout · 08/07/2018 18:39

Datun you have said yourself you are straight - you underestimate the solidarity LGBTs show towards one another.

That tweet shows no solidarity to the Lesbian protesters.

SimonBridges · 08/07/2018 18:37

for transphobic lesbians trying to hijack pride over a few Tweets they've found online about a female penis.

As I said, women spent years with no one listening to them talk about the female experience, now no one believes the lesbians.

Floisme · 08/07/2018 18:37

And maybe you have underestimated the solidarity women - gay and straight - have for one another.

daimbars · 08/07/2018 18:34
  • Can someone tweet Fry, and tell him that. That the lesbians were asserting there is no such thing as a female penis.

I can't see someone with his level of exposure dismissing that.*

Here's Stephen Fry's Tweet if anyone missed it.

Wearies the soul indeed.

Does not surprise me one little bit after watching him over the years. Women are an oddity to him and a long way 'other'.

The tweet makes him look like he does not know what he is talking about. He just has no clue what it was about and is dragging up old attitudes in this debate. It is beyond passé.

SimonBridges · 08/07/2018 18:32

He has deleted it it seems.

busyboysmum · 08/07/2018 18:28

Yes looks like he has deleted it.

SimonBridges · 08/07/2018 18:26

As someone else pointed out on twitter women have had 100s of years of not being believed when talking about the female experience. Now lesbians are not being believed when talking about the lesbian experience.

As a very high profile gay man he would have done much better to just stay quiet on the whole thing, regardless of his views, just like Sandi Toksvig, Sue Perkins and Claire Balding are doing. I’m sure those women have opinions on this topic, and I wouldn’t like to guess where they lie, but they aren’t voicing them.

Bingpot · 08/07/2018 18:23

I can't find his tweet - did he delete it?

Datun · 08/07/2018 18:23

Loads of people have tweeted him about it, myself included.

Got it. That's most of my 'benefit of the doubt' cards used up. (And I had loads).

Floorplan · 08/07/2018 18:19

Thanks Upstart, bloody hell what a thing to say.

Ereshkigal · 08/07/2018 18:15

He was good as Jeeves and Lord Melchett. But no reason to expect anything other than boring male privilege and bog standard misogyny from him.

Well said.

He's obviously getting the usual pats on the back Angry

Ereshkigal · 08/07/2018 18:14

Yes I also caught that, abouttoblow

I know I said this on the previous thread but the snide, underhanded way he used (the word we're not allowed to say) with a question mark as if he didn't know what it meant has really pissed me off.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 08/07/2018 18:12

Wonder how he would respond to the old 'would you sleep with a transman with a vagina?' test.
(But I don't tweet so not going to be me that asks him.)

Datun · 08/07/2018 18:10

It's infuriating.

Fry might well be a misogynist.

Frankly, I've come to the conclusion that it's almost the default position. One has to consciously challenge it, in order to not be one.

But there are quite a few people who do not understand the issue. I don't think the public is at all conscious of it.

Sexual harassment is what is being objected to.

Can someone tweet Fry, and tell him that. That the lesbians were asserting there is no such thing as a female penis.

I can't see someone with his level of exposure dismissing that.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 08/07/2018 18:10

'Wanking on as if women's and lesbians' rights are identity politics but trans ideology isn't.'

Ha ha ha yes.
He hasn't really thought this through very far.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 08/07/2018 18:09

AFAIK 1.3 million people follow Fry on Twitter because he is (was?) funny, not because he has any particular wisdom or moral authority.
He was good as Jeeves and Lord Melchett. But no reason to expect anything other than boring male privilege and bog standard misogyny from him.

ImAGoofyGoober · 08/07/2018 18:08

He’s always hated women, doesn’t surprise me he has no support for lesbians.

Yet so many women seem to idolise him Confused

Ereshkigal · 08/07/2018 18:07

Wanking on as if women's and lesbians' rights are identity politics but trans ideology isn't.

I wonder if he thinks that the statement "gay men are male homosexuals " is bigoted too.
