Such fantastic news and real progress. The leader of the opposition has come out in favour of the Nordic model.

This is real progress. Sarah Champion and Jess Phillips must have been instrumental in explaining why this model is needed to Jeremy Corbyn who had previously voiced support for full decriminalisation. Full decriminalisation legally favours the corporate prostitution industry (pimps and buyers) over the safety and dignity of the women who end up in prostitution.

The Nordic model is the name for a legal approach to prostitution where the woman (or man) selling themselves for sex is decriminalised and is not prosecuted. Support services are provided for people leaving prostitution. Pimps, brothel owners and buyers who make money out of or buy women for sex are criminalised.

This model is in use in Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Northern Ireland, Canada, France, and Ireland. Rates of trafficking drop when the model is implemented as it reduces the demand for buying women for sex.

Can't say I'm particularly interested in what the usual john contingent who always show up to comment on threads like this have to say.

@AngryAttackKittens I'm a sex worker. Any interest in what I have to say?

Surely hearing from punters is a good thing as well. If nothing else, they are the only ones who can tell you why they choose to see sex workers.

Baroquehavoc · 08/07/2018 12:45

The SNP conference endorsed the Nordic model at conference last year but so far has done nothing to take it forward unfortunately.

That's a shame. It's so easy for govermment to say that they support this, but even easier to do nothing about it.

Brazenhussy0 · 08/07/2018 12:31

Very good article by Dr. Kate Lister (March 2018):

Brazenhussy0 · 08/07/2018 12:19

@notsolittlegreb

You are not mistaken. Over 90% of sex workers do not support the Nordic Model because we are well aware it puts us at significantly increased risk of harm. (Since it's implementation in Ireland, violence towards sex workers has increased by about 70%, while no arrests of punters have been made.)

notsolittlegrebe · 08/07/2018 12:13

My understanding was that a significant proportion of sex workers don't support the Nordic model and believe it makes them less safe? Or am I miss informed?

Brazenhussy0 · 08/07/2018 12:10

The hypocrisy here would be funny if it wasn’t over such serious issues.

Self-ID – puts women at risk in favour of an ideology, proponents refuse to listen to the women who will be affected by it, disregards evidence that doesn’t fit the narrative.

Nordic Model - puts women at risk in favour of an ideology, proponents refuse to listen to the women who will be affected by it, disregards evidence that doesn’t fit the narrative.

But because the Nordic Model happens to fit with your ideology, that one gets a free pass to put women (and men) in the sex industry at risk of harm. If you genuinely want to help the women in the sex industry, campaign for other options for women and better support that means we won’t ‘end up’ in the sex industry.
Don’t pull the rug out from underneath us leaving us with no alternatives but to continue in our jobs under much more dangerous circumstances.

If you insist on viewing the majority of us as victims, in what other situation do we ignore the voices of victims and tell them that we know what’s best for them? In what other situation do we ignore victims when they tell us what support they need to keep them safe?

I do not support self-ID and I do not support the Nordic Model.

(@LassWiADelicateAir I exclude you from this. You’ve already said elsewhere that you’re not that fussed about self-ID. We may disagree strongly about sex work, but you are no hypocrite and, for that, you have my respect.)

Trafficked women and children aren’t likely to respond to surveys.

SardinesAreYum · 08/07/2018 12:05

Agree is good news.

I have no interest in policies that encourage men to sexually exploit women, or to see women and girls as consumable objects even more than they do already.

Paying for sec should be stigmatized. Reducing demand is a good thing for society.

OunceOfFlounce · 08/07/2018 12:03

Such a relief. Can't believe it took persuading for him to realise this but phew.

SardinesAreYum · 08/07/2018 12:01

Bleat?

ChattyLion · 08/07/2018 12:00

This is good news. When is Labour going to stop harrying party women for objecting to authoritarian misogyny though?

I hope he has the influence to take this forward and to make it party policy. If no men choose to use women in this way it can be real progress. Thank you to the women pushing on this.

Tackytriceratops · 08/07/2018 11:43

I don't support corbyn. But do think if he publicly backed the Nordic model, all his brain washed sheep fans will take notice and believe It's The Right Thing To Do.

BettyDuMonde · 08/07/2018 11:40

Good.

Well done Sarah Champion!

Yes me too.

TallulahWaitingInTheRain · 08/07/2018 10:46

Really good news. A thing that has been making me feel most like we're descending into a dystopian nightmare has been the apparently blanket support across our political parties and leaders for the decriminalisation of commercialised rape.

Yy to hoping it's endorsed at conference

Writersblock2 · 08/07/2018 09:53

I support the Nordic model. I don’t support Corbyn.

Writersblock2 · 08/07/2018 09:52

He’s still an idiot and this isn’t enough to make me vote for him. Is that what he thinks he’s doing? Appealing to women? He was very vocally anti-women. He can go fuck himself.

Brazenhussy0 · 08/07/2018 09:51

selling a service not our bodies* that should say.

Brazenhussy0 · 08/07/2018 09:50

Hi Brazen, the number of women who choose prostitution are a vanishingly small number. The vast majority are vulnerable abused women.

  • That's incorrect. Please see the links on the other thread (or I'll start copying and pasting all my posts here and nobody wants that Grin)

The law needs to protect the largest number of people and take a stand that women are not commodities that should be bought and sold.

  • Women like me are the majority and the Nordic Model does not do anything to protect us or the vulnerable women in the industry. As I said, it makes our work more dangerous.

No women are not commodities that should be bought and sold, we absolutely agree on that. However, sex workers are willingly selling a service nor our bodies.
My body is still mine before, during and after a booking. I have sexual agency and I believe women have the right to choose who we have sex with, when we have sex, and the reasons we choose to have sex with someone are our own.

TerfsUp · 08/07/2018 09:41

Jeremy Corbyn can go fuck himself. And when he's done, he can fuck himself some more.

QuarksandLeptons · 08/07/2018 09:38

Hi Brazen, the number of women who choose prostitution are a vanishingly small number. The vast majority are vulnerable abused women. The law needs to protect the largest number of people and take a stand that women are not commodities that should be bought and sold.

Hyper capitalism which promotes that anything should be able to be bought or sold if there is a market for it suits the prostitution industry. It doesn’t make it right.
