I just read on another thread that Justine is meeting with Penny Mordaunt soon.

In Justine's words: 'You should also know that I’m due to meet soon with Penny Mordaunt to discuss “any ideas you may have on the women and equalities agenda’' and I will of course reflect the strong opinion of many Mumsnetters wrt to this issue and ask her to do a webchat too.'

I thought this was worth highlighting so people can leave comments here for @justinemumsnet to mull over and raise with Penny. Perhaps, Justine, you could print them all off and hand them over to her when you see her.

Thank you.

Anne - I agree completely. I suggested this on another thread, but how about the voices of mumsnet compile an open letter to Penny? Laying out the basics - starting with what a woman is and why it is important to acknowledge our biology?

WhereDoWeBeginToCovetClarice · 06/07/2018 20:41

Why is updating the GRA so pressing?

When it passed in 2004 thousands of transsexuals were easily able to apply and very few failed apart from a handful of cases where there were small administrative issues. Why is this application process suddenly so demeaning? Is it because the original influx were already certified transsexuals in the days before crossdressers and other autogynephiles started claiming they should be classed as women? Why the change in definition of transsexual/transgender to now include them?

AnneEyhtMeyer · 06/07/2018 20:32

These questions should be sent direct to Penny Mordant not left to be ignored or watered down by Justine. I have zero faith that Justine will represent our views following her outrageous comments.

TheBiologicalWoman · 06/07/2018 17:26

Oops quoting Chuchill! Had dictators in mind and lack of free choice, Freudian slip 🤣

TheBiologicalWoman · 06/07/2018 17:25

Oh and why is it acceptable for the Speaker of the House John Bercow to air his misogynistc views during the consultation?
And quoting hitler. There are too many dicks dick-tating right now.

TheBiologicalWoman · 06/07/2018 17:23

Why would you throw women under the bus like this?

Does this Government actually care about biological women and their daughters?

Why are you not listening to us?

What do you think of those slurs of Terf and Cis? Why is that not called out?

I'm gutted that we would be treated this way and just bullied and assaulted and threatened. Who protects our rights?

R0wantrees · 06/07/2018 16:05

Will Penny Mordant as 'Women's & Equalities' minister be looking into those public figures & representatives of charities who have targetted abuse and smeared a series of women?

Will she also agree that terf is a sexist slur?

LangCleg · 06/07/2018 15:58

How does Penny Mordaunt propose to undo the damage done to the integrity of the single sex exemptions in EqA in the wake of Maria Miller's disastrously prejudicial and biased report that proposed to remove them. Since then, organisations - for example, women's DV orgs, the Guides, YHA - have removed their exemptions in an effort to "get ahead of the law"

Further to this, I would like to know how Government plans to respond when the first serial rapist - someone like John Warbuoys - has exploited these new unisex spaces that were previously sex-segregated and used them as hunting grounds? What will Maria Miller say when the "Caledonian Sleeper rapist" or the "YHA rapist" is up in court and the public is baying for blood?

To that list of organisations who've gone ahead of the law I'd add: The YHA, The police, Swim England and the Caledonian Sleeper

R0wantrees · 06/07/2018 12:54

It's a bit left field (not in the party political sense) but I wonder if Penny Mordant MP might add the following books to her summer reading list?

(I know the newspapers often run articles about this around now)

George Orwell 'Animal Farm'
George Orwell 'Ninety Eight Four'
William Golding 'Lord of the Flies'

I would suggest Germaine Greer's 'The Whole Woman' as well.

Bowlofbabelfish · 06/07/2018 12:22

Has penny read the ATH manifesto?

What are her thoughts on it?

PencilsInSpace · 06/07/2018 10:56

I would like to draw Mordaunt's attention to this unrolled twitter thread which discusses the different and contradictory meanings of the terms sex, gender, male, female, man and woman, as used in the Equality Act, the Gender Recognition Act and the consultation document.

Clarification is needed from the govt & @PennyMordaunt, because this is not academic, it has serious and widespread implications.

I would like Mordaunt to state clearly what she means, in terms of all these contradictory definitions, when she confidently asserts that 'transwomen are women'. I would like her to explain how this could possibly be the starting point to this debate when 'women' has no clear definition.

FemaleHumanAdult · 06/07/2018 09:54

Do you think that the class of people born with vaginas have any experiences that are unique to that class, or suffer any forms of marginalisation, oppression or violence which affect then exclusively or disproportionately, as compared to the class of people born with penises?

If so, does the class born with vaginas need or deserve any protection in law, or spaces away from the other class, or rights or opportunities to redress the balance? Should we track rates of crime committed against the vagina class by the penis class? Should we track whether there's a pay gap between the two classes? Whether there's a difference in rates of representation in elected office, in STEM fields, in media, in corporate leadership positions? Should this group have their own sports, private spaces, opportunities to talk together and organise to fight their oppression, marginalisation, brutalisation?

If so, what word can we use to describe the vagina class - all of them, and only them - so that all of the above is even possible?

SweetGrapes · 06/07/2018 09:49

Who is a transperson?

I am stuck at the first question as I am not sure if I am. Under the old rules, I am definetely not as I do not have dysphoria.

But it seems the new rules do not have a diagnosis of dysphoria as central to being trans. So cross dressing (wearing trousers) every few days and feeling masculine (reading maps well, don't coo over babies, enjoy carpentry and diy, no makeup, no high heels, stem education and job) should be enough.

Is there an objective criteria or is my say-so enough?

Floisme · 06/07/2018 09:43

I would ask her to define 'woman' - which should be a piece of piss seeing as she's the Minister.

I would ask her what the point is of calling for consultation if you don't believe the central question of that consultation is up for debate,

And I would ask her why she believes transwomen are women but not that transmen are men. Because if she did, she would be arguing for transmen to inherit.

BabyItsAWildWorld · 06/07/2018 09:20

Penny, for clarification please:

You believe that transwomrn are women, even the ones still with a penis, and those who intend to keep it?

I think the general public need to know this so we can decide whether we agree.

BabyItsAWildWorld · 06/07/2018 09:17

I'm going to repeat Langclegs question as it is crucial:

How does Penny Mordaunt propose to undo the damage done to the integrity of the single sex exemptions in EqA in the wake of Maria Miller's disastrously prejudicial and biased report that proposed to remove them. Since then, organisations - for example, women's DV orgs, the Guides, YHA - have removed their exemptions in an effort to "get ahead of the law".

Notthatwomanagain · 06/07/2018 08:53

Penny do you actually think it is bigoted and phobic of women to want personal spaces free of people who have a penis or have lived a life with male socialisation and privilege?

Can you see any other oppressed group being expected to just give up their spaces without complaint or fear?

Do you accept male violence and truly believe there won’t be situations where men will use self ID to be access vulnerable women?

Do you agree that classes including sex classes should be allowed to organise and campaign as a class?

Do you honestly honestly not think that chromosomal sex class is real?

If so what is a woman? Can anyone declare themselves a woman and if so based on what?

TellsEveryoneRealFacts · 06/07/2018 08:49

Question for Penny:

If people have been changing sex for decades, how many:
a - Men who 'became' women have gestated a baby?
b - Women who 'became' men provided sperm for a woman to gestate a baby?

If the answer is 'none' - then the project failed.

Thus the GRA needs to be repealed as it turns out - nobody did actually change sex after all.

LangCleg · 06/07/2018 08:31

Why, in a public consultation attempting to tease out the difference between sex and gender, does the "easy read" document conflate sex and gender in a way that obfuscates the object of the consultation?

Does Government wish to confuse people because the consultation is nothing more than a tick box exercise?

LangCleg · 06/07/2018 08:29

I want to repeat my question, because it is important.

Women and girls in the UK have already lost ground because of Ms Miller's failure to grasp the issues and implications and insistence on listening to extremist trans lobby groups such as ATH. What does Ms Mordaunt plan to do to address this?

TheVastMajority · 06/07/2018 08:22

The NHS is at breaking point. Non-urgent operations, from varicose veins to tonsillectomies, breast reductions to Haemorrhoids are going to taken away.

How then do you propose to justify elective, cosmetic surgery on patients with gender dysphoria, if you remove the requirement to have a formal diagnosis ?

What will be offered - breast removal on a healthy young female yes, breast reduction that causes intense back pain for an older women...no.

What about cosmetic surgery to feminise male faces? Vs removal of unsightly but benign skin lesions. Are the NHS going to kow-tow to the translobby at the expense of other NHS users?

Secondly, given the instances of detransistion, and the reluctance of academia to allow research into this area because its not Woke, what are you going to do to ensure that the people allowed to have gender reassignment hormones and surgery are not suffering from other psychiatric issues? There's extensive data to show that most trans individuals also have concurrent psychiatric issues, like depression, anxiety, and personality disorders. Without the gatekeeping service of time and psychiatric assessment, are the government not opening themselves to huge lawsuits in the future for negligence.

Finally, what are the government going to do about the fake information peddled by stonewall and mermaids, both of whom have unbelievable amounts of influence in all spheres of public services? Are the government going to take some action to stop the propaganda?

birdbandit · 06/07/2018 07:48

Has Penny read the description of Gender Dysphoria as defined my the DSM V, (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders). Page 456 to help.

Does the sexual arousal aspect of the definition reflect what she believed we were talking about? Does she understand that "Trans" is an umbrella term? Does she, after reading this, feel mislead?

Does Penny understand the difference between dysmorphia and dysphoria?

Is Penny comfortable with sharing her space with someone who has been diagnosed with Gender Dysphoria, who has (as defined by the DSM V) an arousal response to role playing a "feminine" personality?

Does Penny believe we should all be accommodating, unwittingly or unwillingly other behaviours which have a sexual motivation? Or is it "ok" if no touching takes place? For example, should we change or perception of "flashing" if the perpetrator identifies as a nudist? Should we be more progressive and accept this as their right to their own sexual identity?

birdbandit · 06/07/2018 07:33

If you take the biology out of "woman" what are you left with, other than stereotypes for performed femininity, and do you agree that these are what should legally define what a woman is?

TufVoyaging · 06/07/2018 07:19

If you stated in a pre election manifesto an intent to remove all sex segregation for women, the right to female only health care professionals for women, and that the government would be anti science and proposing to punish people for blasphemy against the new anti science beliefs do you think you would have won an election? Knicknackpaddyflak, this is such an excellent point, and one I will be asking MPs
