The snake eats its tail: Twitter furious that Scar Jo is playing a trans man in next movie

It's been announced Scarlett Johansson is going to play a trans-man in an upcoming film called Rub & Tug.

Apparently Scar-Jo dressing up as a man and a trans woman in the film is offensive "trans face" according to lots of people losing their heads on Twitter.

The irony is utterly breathtaking...

Bit of an ad hominem attack, but okay. I prefer to use cisgender, being a trans person myself. I'm not going to alter my vocabulary and I don't expect you to do so either.

I'll direct you to the MN posting guidelines around trans issues. The c-word is seen as a goady term. We're not allowed to say certain things and neither are you.

PositivelyPERF · 04/07/2018 08:43

I prefer to use cisgender I prefer to call men who want to be women, or women who want to be men, by their actual sex, rather than their fantasy. Strangely enough I get abuse over that one.

ArcheryAnnie · 04/07/2018 08:41

I prefer to use cisgender

Your preference still doesn't make "cisgender" anything other than a sexist, homophobic term which tries to normalise the ludicrous idea that women somehow have innate structural privilege over males.

DisturblinglyOrangeScrambleEgg · 04/07/2018 07:34

SJ's pretty gender non-conforming anyway, I think she falls under the trans umbrella no problem. Therefore, is fine for the part.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 04/07/2018 07:16

I think the TRAs need to look up the definition of acting.

Bless them: their right to be outraged really does trump all rationality, logic, and intelligent thinking, doesn’t it?

Gileswithachainsaw · 04/07/2018 07:02

I think even they have no idea about what point they want to make now....

Talk about looking an idiot

NotTerfNorCis · 04/07/2018 06:56

Haaa just saw all the outrage.

So TRAs want the character to be played by someone born female, but that person must identify as male in real life? Are there many top actors who fit that profile? And how would they cope with earlier scenes where the character 'presents as female'?

You agreed to abide by the terms and conditions when you signed up here. If anyone reports your comments using a banned term to describe women they will be deleted regardless you identifying as trans.

MistressDeeCee · 04/07/2018 03:26

The C word is banned on this board? I didn't know that. But since it's a silly, shitty made up label then I'm glad

Woman will do

SPOFS · 04/07/2018 02:02

@MsFrizzle

I do believe that "cis" is banned on these boards. You may receive a strike for using it. Check your inbox.

Well MsFrizzle, since you can’t be arsed actually finding out what the thread is about, I really can’t take your comment, about transwomen being women, seriously 🙄 BTY, the term is woman or man, not that bullshite ‘cis’ label. Actual women or men don’t need a bit added on.

SPOFS · 04/07/2018 01:30

It shouldn't matter who she is playing. She is an actress. Her job is to pretend to be somebody else.

MsFrizzle · 04/07/2018 00:59

Wait, is she playing a transgender woman or a transgender man? The OP's wording is confusing and I cba to look it up right now from my comfy position in bed.

MsFrizzle · 04/07/2018 00:58

As somebody who does believe trans women are women - I prefer this to a cisgender man dressing up as a trans woman like it's a fun costume or something. I'd rather a trans woman be played by a woman or a trans woman (ideally) than a man.

That was Jared Leto in Dallas Buyers Club. He got a lot of stick for it at the time.

Now, if I recall correctly (have not seen the film), Leto had at least one scene putting on wig and make-up. As ijustwannadance said above, the (on film) exposure without ladyface (in this case) would be "triggering" (or so TRAs keep saying).

According to TRAs:
"Transface" exists (because they say so)
"Womanface" does not exist (because they say so).

FloralBunting · 04/07/2018 00:25

That is pretty much the entire schtick of the TRA gang, isn't it? Have a butcher's around at what's going on and who seems to have good arguments, and hoik those arguments over to trans issues to get... whatever it is that particular TRA wants.

I say that particular one, because clearly there is no real consensus on what is wanted. Some want validation so bad they are oblivious to all else, and clearly some hate women with a venomous passion that often betrays them.

thebewilderness · 04/07/2018 00:20

The transgender advocates objected to Redmayne playing That Danish Girl because he is not trangender and also the Dallas Buyers Club film had a male playing a transgender.
There has long been a problem with white washing history by casting white people instead of any of the competent actors who were of the ethnic people's whose history was being fictionalized.

Not surprised the transgender advocates appropriated the argument for their own purposes.

ErrolTheDragon · 04/07/2018 00:12

Hmph yes, Eddie Redmayne - did no one complain about him playing Stephen Hawking? Not only the ableism but wtf with the blatant two-cultural appropriation of a a History of Art grad playing a physicist?

FloralBunting · 04/07/2018 00:08

I'm sure they're all really ticked off about someone coming along and appropriating their existence and probably getting plaudits for it.

I'm stifling the heartfelt sobs on their behalf.

WichBitchHarpyTerfThatsMe · 03/07/2018 23:22

I'm the authentic blob who played the blob in the film The Blob dontcha know?

diddlemethis · 03/07/2018 23:16

Isn't Scarlet a professional actor? I'm confused, were the dwarves and elves in Lord of the Rings real? Is Daniel Radcliff really a wizard? Or were these parts played by, you know, ACTORS?

MistressDeeCee · 03/07/2018 21:58

Meanwhile I await the day that het men happily sit down to watch a spot of "lesbian porn" featuring two strapping muscular lasses with big cocks
😂😂😂😂😂😂
