This is even worse coming from a woman.

Imagine all the middle-aged bearded 'left wing' academics who are secret women/hating porn addicts chuckling to themselves at this TWAW statement.

gendercritter · 03/07/2018 09:51

Definitely write to your own MP about this issue but Penny's email is [email protected] if you want to write to her too

Pratchet · 03/07/2018 09:51

I'm with Hulo and Lenoeski on this. It's kind of disappointing but a bit of a bone thrown. The difference is, it won't shut them up.

PM probably thinks (and is being told by her own Equalities teams who are transadvocates not women's advocates) that she can please both sides by allowing Self ID but keeping the Equality Act.

We need to make sure she knows this is an absolute lie.

Don't forget, her own LGBT Head of Equalities thinks one of the few ways EA exemptions can be used is to exclude an abusive transgender male (XY) from the same women's shelter where his wife has sought refuge.

That's what they think of the EA exemptions at the heart of government. It's not 'carte blanche' - as he put it - to keep transgender males out of women's toilets, changing rooms, prisons, hospital wards.

The Equality Act cannot be trusted unless a duty to provide single sex spaces is enshrined in law for women, with 'sex' defined as biological sex.

From the guidelines for gov consultations
B. Consultations should have a purpose
Do not consult for the sake of it. Ask departmental lawyers whether you
have a legal duty to consult. Take consultation responses into account
when taking policy forward. Consult about policies or implementation plans
when the development of the policies or plans is at a formative stage. Do
not ask questions about issues on which you already have a final view

AngryAttackKittens · 03/07/2018 09:35

This would be a great time to get James Kirkup and any other journalists who're already on record as having concerns on board. The fact that Mordaunt is presenting it as a fait accompli seems like something Kirkup in particular would fine interesting. Anyone who has media contacts, now is the time to use them.

I want to write to my MP to make a clear point without waffling. Anyone willing to help me please pm your ideas. I don't want to blow it TY

LangCleg · 03/07/2018 09:29

The whole consultation hangs on whether they are or not. If they were unequivocally so they wouldn't need a GRC. It's silly to pretend that it doesn't. So she is in effect saying it's a fait accompli which is against all the principles of public consultation.

This is the point I will be raising to my MP in a letter. I'll be asking him to forward my concerns to the minister also.

Definitely worth making this point on any newspaper article accepting comments.

Will writing to PM herself be worth it, or to labour MPs ? I guess we must try everything. I am apalled to hear that TW are women is the baseline for the consultation. Why? What the hell is she saying...from here on in ,what are our GC views worth? Sounds as though it's already been decided.

Parliamentary summer recess is July 20th - 5th September people. We have very little time to get their attention.

So get writing right now.

This.

Popchyk · 03/07/2018 09:09

I will write to my Conservative MP who has serious concerns about how the proposed changes affect women and children. I will ask him personally to speak to Penny Mordaunt.

MsBeaujangles · 03/07/2018 09:05

Hopefully the statements from PM that ‘trans women are women’ and ‘we will listen to women groups’ will be widely used to exemplify the concerns. We need the media to challenge PM, and those making similar claims, on this.

LittleLebowski · 03/07/2018 09:04

I am totally unsurprised. We have come so far down this route, I don't think any politician would be able to say anything other than 'trans women are women' or face a major backlash and be made to issue some apology. Tories in particular have few opportunities to appear like the warm and fuzzy party. I'm sure this is seen as an easy concession to make to look up with the times and all that. The majority will just go on not believing it. As Hulo said - proof is in the pudding.

ImpYCelyn · 03/07/2018 08:55

Interesting that now they’re prepared to throw some money at LGBT health, but dragged their heels over funding for PrEP...

HubrisComicGhoul · 03/07/2018 08:48

If that is the starting point, it must be a fact and therefore she and every other MP accepting this must be able to explain how a trans-women has the same objective reality as I do and what makes them different from a feminine man.

I will be writing to my MP for her explanation.

Bowlofbabelfish · 03/07/2018 08:40

Someone should ask her outright:

hey! Penny! Do you believe humans can change sex?

PartridgeInAFairTree · 03/07/2018 08:29

Wow that interview on the Today Programme with PM just now really shows anyone who is standing up for the rights and dignity of women and girls just how much we need to do to even get our concerns heard on the same level with those wanting to demedicalise the GRA.

Ereshkigal · 03/07/2018 08:27

Who the fuck lets these people stand for public office?

Quite.

AngryAttackKittens · 03/07/2018 08:19

Starting with a statement of non-fact. That bodes well!

Atalune · 03/07/2018 08:18

Listening now.

It’s not a consultation. At all.

“We will listen to both sides” hang on, I thought gender was a spectrum?????

Why why why is she speaking on this is she already has stated trans women are women! She’s biased. If nothing else.

I’m going to write to her. Is there a petition for her to be sacked.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 03/07/2018 08:12

She's an MP and she says that.

Who the fuck lets these people stand for public office?

TimeLady · 03/07/2018 08:10

She has a piece in The Independent today too

FlippinFumin · 03/07/2018 08:10

Well, nice to see she is starting with an open mind then.

Perhaps we should all send her some of the lovely 'women' on youtube who threaten actual born women with rape, violence and tell us it is all our fault for not being good 'women'.

Hulo · 03/07/2018 08:08

Well she can start off saying it if she likes, I don't care, as long as it doesn't inform anything she actually does; a bone thrown to the TRAs. If she starts with that they might shut up. If they start up, she can say it a couple more times till they quieten down again.

Anyhow; it has been shown that lesbians, gays and bisexuals suffer more from issues around addiction and, unsurprisingly, mental health problems. Engagement with health services is lower due to experience, or fear of, homophobic attitudes. I've found a random report showing gays, lesbians and bisexuals have a poorer experience of cancer care which I wouldn't have thought.

What people need to understand is this is not about banning appropriate counselling for people who might be seeking support to explore their sexuality or gender identity… this is about harmful processes. In the most extreme form, corrective rape, and those must be banned. We are looking at the best ways of doing that.

Is corrective rape not already banned? Hmm
