Five journalist shot dead

Dell Cameron @ dellcam
NEW: The Capital Gazette shooter, Jarrod Ramos, was the subject of a Capital article in which he's described threatening and harassing a woman on Facebook.

According to the article, he had pleaded guilty in 2011 to a misdemeanor harassment charge.

Kim Bellware @ bellwak
Gutted about the shooting at the Capital Gazette, but am reminded in 2018, not everyone will be universally horrified that journalists are hurt or killed

Note: Milo Yiannopoulos just 2 days ago: “I can’t wait for the vigilante squads to start gunning journalists down on sight”

I don't know if this story will get much coverage in the UK.

It's HUGE.

It's about violence about women and their status in society, and the culture war for liberty and democracy in America right now.

Blink and you might miss this story. Or not understand it's significance.

When journalists start getting killed, it's BAD. Seriously bad.

This does not bode well for all our futures.

Here is a link about the 5 murdered journalists.

No I do not think the OP is showing them much respect given that she found the time to search for and post that screen print but couldn't be bothered to find out anything about the individual journalists.

BeyondRaggydoll · 29/06/2018 09:54

AAK - apparently his race is listed as "white, non-Hispanic", which appears to directly contradict another report I read Confused

AngryAttackKittens · 29/06/2018 09:51

Yeah, the international brotherhood of the aggrieved men with a grudge against women.

Rerailing though, the common element here is a history of violence and obsessive stalking-type behavior towards women. When attempts at control are thwarted these men act out in increasingly dangerous ways.

CaitlynsCat · 29/06/2018 09:46

FWIW, AngryAttackKittens, I don't think 'white' is all that important. I read some postings from Asian incel male anime fans (in Asia, not the West) and they seem to be at least as bad as the white ones, especially when misogyny is socially acceptable in most parts of the world.

Japan is itself the home of legalised paedophilia and the SOURCE of all of this culture, and it's popular with socially marginal tech-obsessed males all over the world.

AngryAttackKittens · 29/06/2018 09:44

there was an article citing research that terrorists often had a previous history of DV wasn't there?

Yep. Hopefully someone, probably Rowan who's our resident encyclopedia, will have the link to hand.

RedToothBrush · 29/06/2018 09:44

Well this is simply about a mass murder. A wider narrative is, as I said, something that people construct.

Except that so many of these isolated mass murderers follow this really strange pattern and have common themes.

People can bury their heads in the sand about it, but y'know.

Just another isolated mad man.

stillathing · 29/06/2018 09:42

violent men probably have quite a lot in common with each other whatever their political ideology or motive is. there was an article citing research that terrorists often had a previous history of DV wasn't there? (sorry i am rubbish at retaining the necessary info to find links).

it doesn't even have to be an organised attack on women's rights (although the incel movement is very blatantly exactly this). i would say that there is always a danger to women when men are this violent.

i think it's really important to look at the people and the patterns behind all crimes like this. to look at their upbringing and their relationships. we need this knowledge in order to try and solve the huge global problem that is male violence.

AngryAttackKittens · 29/06/2018 09:42

(And yes, in this case I know that the murderer is mixed race, before that turns into another angry derail.)

AngryAttackKittens · 29/06/2018 09:41

The combination of unstable white men and manga/anime is rarely a positive one.

RedToothBrush · 29/06/2018 09:41

The biggest respect you can give a journalist is to tell the story that their murderer tried to silence.

The OP is not showing respect for the dead? Don't you think that's a bit of shit come-back?

In a word, no.
See above comment about respect for journalists.

A Judge stepped down yesterday, so he has control of the courts and the press.

"Actually it's simply about culture. "

Well this is simply about a mass murder. A wider narrative is, as I said, something that people construct.

JurgenKloppsCat · 29/06/2018 09:40

There is a connected issue here about gun ownership, and those who support it. If you want a society where the 2nd amendment is sacred, this sort of slaughter is a consequence. If you allow guns, alongside the fetishisation of ownership as fundamental to your freedom, coupled with no universal healthcare, then you have to lie in your own cartridge-strewn bed, I’m afraid.

Case in point; Canada has similar levels of gun ownership, but also a health service. The contrast on either side of the border could not be more stark.

berserk.wikia.com/wiki/Brand_of_Sacrifice

"You have now been marked with the Brand of Sacrifice. The lives of those who bear the Brand, from the last drop of blood, to the last moment of your agonizing death, will feed life to the new Child of Darkness"

"The Brand of Sacrifice (生贄の焼印 Ikenie no Yakīn?) marks those for a sacrificial ceremony in which an apostle or God Hand is created. The sacrificed, usually someone close and dear to the summoner, is then ritualistically murdered, with the deceased's life force used to complete the summoner's transition into either an apostle or a member of the God Hand."

RedToothBrush · 29/06/2018 09:38

There is a battle going on as usual to blame various usual suspects, i.e. Trump, Milo Yiannopoulos, white people, Hispniac people, and so on.

Actually it's simply about culture.

A culture which sees it as ok and justified to attack women and anyone who speaks out to defend women and women's rights versus those who think that women are deserving of respect.

That certainly people and leaders embody that culture only makes it worse as it only helps to embolden those nasty views by legitimise them.

This has been under the surface for some years. The inception culture isn't new. But it's becoming more prevalent, particularly with public figures also supporting a twisted narrative of who is the victim.

And yes it is important that we have voices saying things like Milo has. It's an effective awaken and call to arms which drip, drip, drip feeds the twisted fantasies of violent men.

He seems to have been influenced by this manga.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berserk_(manga)

Specifically he placed this 'brand' on the judge & journalists pictures.

The OP is not showing respect for the dead? Don't you think that's a bit of shit come-back?

LassWiADelicateAir · 29/06/2018 09:35

I'm not seeing much sympathy for the 5 murdered journalists- certainly not in the opening post. The OP takes the trouble to screen shot something from the harrasment victim but says nothing about the journalists- not even the newsworthy fact that one of them is the brother of Carl Hiasen.

The story and their names and faces is all over the internet but the OP can't be bothered linking to that or naming them.

Popchyk · 29/06/2018 09:31

The newspaper printed the truth about his harrassment of a woman.

And so he had to attack them for telling the truth. Because that is an awful crime in his eyes.

The truth is under attack all around right now.

RedToothBrush · 29/06/2018 09:29

I actually think co-opting this tragedy in the way this thread has done is pretty appalling.

Well you need to learn a bit more about politics then and pay a bit more attention.

This isn't being co-opted at all. Sadly this is not in the least bit surprising. It's the nature of the dynamic between the freedom of the press and fascism/totalitarianism. And unless you are going to tell me that Trump is a passionate supporter of the institutions of the system of the press and courts keeping a check on the power of the President, you can really jog on. The culture war between Trumps America and liberals is only just starting. We haven't seen anything yet. It's going to get a lot worse yet. America has got a time of reckoning to deal with.

Social media just gives the opportunity for leaders to distance themselves from the violence they intentionally are trying to create.

I fully expect more attacks on journalists in America in the next two years. I would be utterly delighted if I'm wrong.

OP posts:
CaitlynsCat · 29/06/2018 09:27

He wasn't ONLY obsessed with the journalist for reporting his assholery, but also the judge who threw out his case against them, his last tweet being to his fake @judgemoylanfrnd saying 'fuck you' (apropos nothing in particular afaict, as he has now retried).

Pratchet · 29/06/2018 09:21

The story shouts incel. Incel terror really frightens me. I don't stand at the edge of tube platforms any more. I know it sounds ridiculous but the threats to women coming from all sides are matched by a callousness from mass opinion 'well you wanted equality you should have been careful what you wished for' and it's awful. It ranges all the way down to men not standing for heavily pregnant women. 'Women aren't special'. Sorry to trivialise but it's a whole range of behaviours.

CaitlynsCat · 29/06/2018 09:18

There is a battle going on as usual to blame various usual suspects, i.e. Trump, Milo Yiannopoulos, white people, Hispniac people, and so on.

Ramos is, for what it is worth mixed race being mixed non-white Hispanic & white.

heavy.com/news/2018/06/jarrod-ramos-family-parents/

People have seized upon this Tweet as a tenuous link to supporting Trump.

twitter.com/EricHartleyFrnd/status/644292223547404288

The facts are here about what happened:

www.mdcourts.gov/sites/default/files/import/appellate/unreportedopinions/2015/2281s13.pdf

The shooter in around 2010 contacted some forgotten schoolmate on FB. She was friendly to him (online - they never met offline), he started sending threatening emails & other electronic communications, including trying to get her fired, she got a restraining order, he got a suspended jail sentence, and that at least was the end of THAT.

HOWEVER, this slightly random case of threatening internet communications was written up in the local newspaper, courtesy of writer Eric Thomas Hartley.

Ramos got pissed off & took the paper to court, where the case was thrown out on the basis that every word was true, and he'd failed to show otherwise.

He then pursued a seven year vendetta against the newspaper & its journalists culminating in this mass-murder (though Hartley had long since moved to another state & newspaper, so the victims are essentially random).

Anyway, one can construct whatever narrative suits.

BeyondRaggydoll · 29/06/2018 09:16

I could maybe understand Lass' point if he was "just" a violent male (though again, there is the feminist analysis of why it's usually a male to be had there), but when it's someone who has specifically held a grudge against the paper for reporting his dodgy behaviour around women, it is surely much less of a leap...?
