What Gets a Woman Suspended From Twitter

Here are the tweets that transactivists reported

The interesting thing is they put me on a 12 hour suspension but wanted a mobile phone number to restore my account. Since I don't have a mobile phone and only a landline that can't take an SMS message, I am now locked out of my account.

I did appeal. Heard nothing yet.

Fuck Twitter.

Where is everyone keeping in touch? It seems like almost every online platform is against females who have their own opinions being allow to connect

I second Ovarit. It's beginning to look quite comprehensive. There is also Gender Critical on Saidit though Saidit is an awful site, but right now it is easier to join.

ovarit.com is growing and improving, I find it a lot easier to navigate than spinster.xyz/

Cocothefirst · 05/10/2020 16:51

I was banned for using the same wording about biological sex in lots of tweets. It was treated as spam.

I appealed and won. I also contacted the Better Business Bureau and they helped.

ReceiptsForAll · 05/10/2020 15:02

My experience has been that Twitter respond fairly quickly now to my reports. Particularly anything to do with encouraging suicide.

Please don't get discouraged about reporting. I frequently see complaints from TRAs about being in "twitter jail" just because I called "some c### a TERF".

I had a ban once for pointing out that male violence is not something women can do much about, nor should we be blamed for it in any way Hmm

TheRealMcKenna · 05/10/2020 13:35

For anyone with a spare 3 hours and an interest in how Twitter operates, this is a must watch episode.

Conclusion - bans and suspensions tend to only go towards one ‘side’ and not the other. Doxing, death threats etc are tolerable from one ‘group’ but not another. This seemed to be admitted.

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 05/10/2020 13:01

I sympathise with those here who have been banned from Twitter and other platforms. But I'm not surprised.

OK, maybe a tinge surprised at Twitter's blatant dishonesty in saying users are not allowed to wish death on anyone (meaning Donald Trump), while it remains fine for TRAs to call for women to suffer violence, job loss, death and anything else their nasty little minds can think up.

OK. Not really surprised at all.

What a splendid article- spot on!

R0wantrees · 29/06/2018 05:34

mancheeze I think its appalling the way that GC women are being targetted by some TRAs. I also think its appalling the way that women are being targetted here on Mumsnet.

Glosswitch's article in the The New Statesman reminds us:

"The demonisation of Mumsnet is just the latest incarnation of witch-hunting
Naturally, it frightens people to think of what a group of mothers might actually demand.

“The deliberate withdrawal of women from men has almost always been seen as a potentially dangerous or hostile act, a conspiracy, a subversion, a needless and grotesque thing.” Thus wrote Adrienne Rich in 1976’s Of Woman Born, her seminal exploration of the politics of motherhood. From the workers gossiping in the spinning circle to old wives passing down knowledge of contraception and abortion, women gathered in isolation have long been considered untrustworthy. What might they be saying? What could they be plotting? And how, above all, might they be controlled?

It’s a problem that’s never gone away, though the context has changed. Anxiety over women’s speech – fuelling violent backlash in the form of witch trials and scold’s bridles – arose at a time when, to quote Marina Warner, “women dominated the webs of information and power; the neighbourhood, the village, the well, the washing place, the shops, the stalls, the street were their arena of influence, not only the household”. @Rowan

Ok, I misunderstood your comment as it seemed to come out of nowhere as I read it.

I am a US and Canadian Citizen and most definitely on the left. I'm an Independent in the USA and an NDPer in Canada.

So yes, many women like me on the left are being censored by transactivists.

I still haven't gotten back into my account btw.

I will try the SMS service.

mancheeze

Apologies for my clumsily worded comment.

I'm aware how women are targetted by some TRAs on Twitter.

Twitter rules are used, sometimes with mass reports to silence, censor and smear.

There are many tweets on Twitter which are transphobic, bigotted and hate filled often posted by men.

THese seem not to attract the same efforts. (perhaps there is also a comparison with how MN is targetted rather than Kiwi Farms etc)

I was also attepting to also highlight the incongruity that whilst it is a common claim that transphobia comes from the far-right. THose women and GC people seem mostly to come from left wing / green / liberal political backgrounds. (see Venice Allen, Linda Bellos, Posie Parker, Miranda Yardley, Lisa Muggeridge etc etc)

Mumsnet, WPUK, We Need to Talk have all been described by some TRAs as being right wing, like the KKK or Nazis.

None of this is the case, it does though act as both a smear and (I think) has some coersive influence in disuading others to listen more closely to the truth.

More people need to be aware of how SM, especially Twitter is used.

FeminaSum · 28/06/2018 11:42

For an interesting comparison, every single message retweeted by this account has been reported at least once. Some have been taken down, of course, but have a read through the 180+ that remain as Twitter deemed them unactionable. All of them are from this month alone.

Would something like this be viable?

Sorry not LOJ, misread that bit

BeyondFemaleElitist · 28/06/2018 09:47

"some even reporting the receipt of death threats"

Funny, that comment from LOJ sounds almost like an allegedly...

mancheeze · 28/06/2018 01:07

How did the far right come into this?

Oh and I wasn't asking what gets suspended, I was stating that THIS is what got ME suspended for who knows how long.

OP posts:
R0wantrees · 27/06/2018 22:59

The simple answer to the OP is that a woman is suspended from Twitter if there are sufficient reports which can fit with the specific criteria that is required for sanction.

Its worth noting that there are many examples of Tweets with transphobic and bigoted comments by what seem to be male posters whose accounts also demonstrate more obvious 'far right' beliefs, yet these seem not to be reported.

THis is despite the recent assertions by Owen Jones etc and exemplified in Indy article:

'How the far right is attacking the lives of the transgender community - and what we can do to stop it'
(concludes)
"Another key force fighting the right wing attacks on the transgender community is the tireless work of activists themselves, who fight day in and day out to challenge the status quo.

Activists and transgender people such as Jake Graf, Monroe Bergdorf, Hannah Winterborne, Lily Madigan, and Shon Fey all use their platforms to chip away at the negative propaganda.

Despite being subject to a barrage of abuse on social media platforms like Twitter, and some even reporting the receipt of death threats, their high-profile presence ploughs the furrow for younger gender non-conforming people, and gives them role models.

For Jake, one of the most important thing is that the cisgender community can do to support transgender rights is to get on board and support the transgender cause. Speaking to indy100, he said:

Now more than ever, allies' support is vital as there are too few of us to always make our voices heard"

Why the hell should you supply a mobile phone number OP?

They want to verify my account with an SMS message. I don't like mobile phones and don't have one and therefore cannot get the SMS to verify.

It is the give them and inch and they take a mile mentality. There is no proper definition of this particular phobia, so once they have a few tweets deleted the noose gets ever tighter Sad

Pratchet · 27/06/2018 21:15

Yes Last. They have very tiny lives.

ScarletBegonias · 27/06/2018 20:00

Amalfi

How about deleting the tweet and then, when you're back in again, posting something with equivalent sentiments but slightly different wording?

Obviously you shouldn't have to do that but it would restore your account.

iismum · 27/06/2018 19:37

It's mind-blowing how little it takes to get suspended for transphobia on Twitter, given how much abuse and violent threats women get which rarely result in banning.

I kind of wish we could open up the debate more widely - get people who are not engaged with this involved. They would be constantly banned for saying things that they would have no idea is offensive, and it may open their eyes to the extreme ludicrousness of the situation. At the moment it's too easy to say that feminist get banned for transphobia for saying horrible, hateful things, because most people never see the tweets that get people banned.
