How stressed are you about the loss of female-only spaces?

How stressed are you that the UK Govt may legalise self-declaration of sex, enabling any man to become legally female and gain access to female-only spaces such as refuges, sports, awards, jobs (e.g. performing smear tests), dormitories and lesbian groups?

We want to find out how big this issue is so we are running a poll to get a snapshot. This link takes you directly there. Please vote and share the link with friends so we can get as many participants as possible.

@beautifulday when will you have to share a sleeping/changing space?

I don't share changing or sleeping space with any stranger just now. Can't see what the difference will be to most people. In a shop there are cubicals, in the swimming it's family change and cubicals, in the toilets it's cubicals.

Randomname234 · 26/06/2018 22:28

And when people are told they can't even try to challenge them??

Self ID will not make sexual harassment, intimidation, or sexual acts in public legal. If someone is using these spaces in these ways, you can still challenge them, rightly so.

I'll say again, trans women and men have been using female spaces without ID for a very long time. If you saw (what you suspected to be) a transexual using the woman's loo now, would you demand they drop trou and show you their genitals?

I'm on the fence about self ID to be honest. I agree that transitioning medically and legally should be a well thought out and regulated process. But perhaps my arse is so firmly wedged on the fence because all this hysteria is not a reality for me. I'm around transpeople most weekends. The people I see IRL are considerate, lovely people who just want to pee and then leave.

Oh i see. Thanks Lass

LassWiADelicateAir · 26/06/2018 22:07

I want to vote but dont do twitter. Any chance of a non twittery link please? Ta !

You can just create a twitter account. I have one in a random made up name with a Gmail address I never use. I've never tweeted and never will but there are about half a dozen people whose tweets I occasionally look at and having a twitter account keeps them all in one place. It allowed me to vote.

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 26/06/2018 22:02

I don't have any problem whatsoever sharing spaces with transwoman. They are my friends.

They might be YOUR friends but they're not mine and I want them kept away from me and my daughters in female ONLY spaces.

Beautifulday49 · 26/06/2018 21:58

Very concerned indeed about the possibility of my boundaries not being respected with regards to e.g. health care. Don’t want to share sleeping/changing space with male bodied people. I feel for those vulnerable women in prisons who are trapped with far fewer choices than us outside. And I have found feminist women-only spaces healing and empowering when needed. I feel angry and sad at this backlash against our hard-won progress.

MunchausensLovelyHorse · 26/06/2018 21:44

Any perverts using spaces for dubious purposes will be prosecuted as they are already

And when people are told they can't even try to challenge them??

Randomname234 · 26/06/2018 21:42

Like LM and Sarah, not really stressed. Self ID has been happening since transsexuals were a thing. Trans people have to enter female spaces in order to obtain a GRC. Any perverts using spaces for dubious purposes will be prosecuted as they are already.

Self ID will not be a law saying 'OK boys and girls, time to go and assault everyone!' As PP have already said, sports, shelters, etc are already rightly exempted and likely to remain so.

I don't have any problem whatsoever sharing spaces with transwoman. They are my friends.

MunchausensLovelyHorse · 26/06/2018 21:28

When I went in for my hysterectomy damn right I wanted a sex segregated space.

And so did the blokes in the other waiting area, in their dressing gowns, waiting to be walked to theatre.

LML83 · 26/06/2018 21:27

@SarahAr like what you say, put it much better than me.

Also not stressed at all. I don't think many people will actually be directly effected.

scotsheather · 26/06/2018 21:24

Seems to be happening already anyway, we should be fighting what is already going on not what is proposed.

Bowlofbabelfish · 26/06/2018 21:19

I’m angry. Not stressed.

mancheeze · 26/06/2018 20:30

I'm very angry.

I'm a woman focused, woman centered second wave feminist who sees transgenderism as a men's rights movement to colonize humans, to colonize women by literally trying to jump into our skins.

It's men trying to possess something (nature and women and children) and to control.

spontaneousgiventime · 26/06/2018 20:27

Not stressed, not angry I'm LIVID.

Voted.

loveyouradvice · 26/06/2018 20:20

Actually really stressed... it keeps me awake at night....

And deeply sad, and confused....

And yes, angry and determined to do something and hoping it is not too late

Ereshkigal · 26/06/2018 19:10

I along with others have explained to Sarah on countless threads why there is a problem with self ID. Sarah has so far failed to engage with any of it, and imagines that any lurkers will be totes convinced by Sarah's winning sophistry and platitudes about the Equality Act. When Sarah would room 101 those exemptions in a heartbeat if that was on the table currently.

Ereshkigal · 26/06/2018 19:06

Not stressed at all.

Yeah, didn't really expect you to be.

SarahAr · 26/06/2018 18:55

Not stressed at all.

Self-declaration of sex will not enable men (or even transwomen) to gain access to female spaces such as refuges as the government has reaffirmed it is not changing the Equality Act and the exceptions within that act.

And as for women's sport - both the GRA and the EA exclude women's sport. So self-declaration will not affect it at all.

But interesting to see the number of women who are being mislead and caused unnecessary anxiety by these misleading posts - posts written by people who claim to be fighting for women's rights.

Ereshkigal · 26/06/2018 18:50

will have the right to define themselves in a way we all take for granted, and upon doing, be permitted to share the space of those they identify with?

What about those other people? Shouldn't they have a say when it is an issue of safety, privacy and dignity?

GoldilocksTheGraceless · 26/06/2018 18:12

Is self identification going to be fluid so that essentially a person who authentically identifies as a man can ad hoc decide to infiltrate precious women's spaces as he sees fit and then self declare his male gender again?
Or is it that someone who has never been accepted in any space to speak of, will have the right to define themselves in a way we all take for granted, and upon doing, be permitted to share the space of those they identify with?
Nice scaremongering

pombear · 26/06/2018 18:09

Not stressed Dr Nic. Love your stuff, but this is appealing to socialisation of 'worried', not 'angry'. I know your poll allows traumatised/anxious as well as 'angry'.

I'm Angry.

I want to separate it from 'traumatised' and 'anxious' as they're stereotypically feminine traits.

Let me say, independently of any other emotions 'I'm angry'.
That OK?

(I realise I have no right really to do this as, instead of you, I'm here hiding on Mumsnet and I have so much admiration for you being out there doing what you're doing, so this isn't criticism, just feedback).

stillathing · 26/06/2018 18:09

Please do a non twitter one!

Southfields · 26/06/2018 18:04

Nice meme Dr Nic.

HowWasLastnight · 26/06/2018 18:04

I am not on Twitter.

Answer - Anxious.

Melamin · 26/06/2018 18:01

I'm more worried about the community groups for older people. There are a lot of ladies' groups, etc that cater for women who live on their own and want a bit of a social life. There is one for widowed older women. (It isn't just women - there are men in sheds for lonely men too (they can take women or not as they please at the moment). I was talking to a friend with an 87 year old husband with dementia - he enjoys a bit of man conversation occasionally as at that age, social groups are dominated by women.)
I hope that if I am on my own when I am older, I will still be able to join groups for company that are same sex.
