How stressed are you about the loss of female-only spaces?

How stressed are you that the UK Govt may legalise self-declaration of sex, enabling any man to become legally female and gain access to female-only spaces such as refuges, sports, awards, jobs (e.g. performing smear tests), dormitories and lesbian groups?

We want to find out how big this issue is so we are running a poll to get a snapshot. This link takes you directly there. Please vote and share the link with friends so we can get as many participants as possible.

Very.

Baroquehavoc · 30/06/2018 19:24

BarrackerBarmer. I agree.

I also find it strange that as a society we know why women and girls need space away from male people. Yet we have to pretend that its a mystery why separate changing facilities and programs encouraging girls into stem career have been developed.

R0wantrees · 30/06/2018 19:08

Its worth reading the comments under Janice Turner's Times article Barracker

There's a share token in the thread below:

I think what terrifies me more than the prospect of losing spaces is the willingness of our society to legally and socially invisibilise females.

We are half of all people and yet I look around and people are busy pretending that females don't exist. Only ladybrains and manbrains. Attached randomly to cervixes and prostates.

And I'm incredulous.
We're right here. Totally visible, still having the babies, being the sex objects, mopping the floors, making the tea and yet there's a huge movement to pretend we don't actually exist as people. Just as feelings. And people are actually taking this seriously.

And I wonder how if you can get a society to go along with pretending that half of all people aren't allowed to be recognised and acknowledged for what they actually are, and for what you know them to be, then you can get them to do anything.

Those who can make you believe absurdities, can make you commit atrocities.

It feels like one of those nightmares where you are screaming and no sound comes out.

We all know exactly what and who women are. The world seems to have split into those who will lie about it and those who won't. The sheer scale of this lie; the numbers of the people who will take part in the denial is what horrifies me.

It's made me realise we are only ever a hair's breadth away from being medieval in our beliefs.

There has been such a turning point of late. Man Friday, bless them, achieved no less than to make it OK to be GC

Think like most things, its a case of 'keep on keeping on' pinchpoint !

#ManFriday have been dealing with a lot of unpleasantness in the last few days but they are made of strong womanliness!

Thanks for response, R0wantrees. I thought I posted this but it vanished into ether...Trying again.

Someone posted to the effect that even though internet discussion is easily disrupted to marginalise/silence/erase GC perspectives, there isn't a thing they can do about women just talking to one another about children's health. At the swings. At the school gates. At book clubs. It's magic.

That's also my experience - most women (and men) I speak to have isolated concerns which evaporate when patiently unpacked. They just haven't had to give it any (critical) thought before.

I, too, have been writing to the organisations who have so enthusiastically galloped ahead of changes to the law. So far none of their replies have suggested they 'get it' yet, but at least they are now feeling the heat and being forced to reassess their strategies.

I feel stressed about it - like another poster mentioned I always feel quite vulnerable if toilets in a club / restaurant are quite a long walk away from busy areas, esp if there is a man also in that corridor /stairs which are inevitably poorly lit.
I’m also scared for my daughter - and angry too. She’s sporty but what chance will she have if she’s up against boys? It’s so blindingly obvious that it’s not fair so why is is allowed?
Sex segregated spaces are there for safety, and dignity of the people using them. They are hugely important in a world where women die and are assaulted due to their sex. Male violence is the problem in our society and we need to be tackling that, not just allowing anyone who fancies it into our spaces

Ereshkigal · 29/06/2018 10:25

I think the survey the OP links too has had to be removed as the trans army found out about it and bombarded it till the results were skewed in their favour.

There is no point setting up these polls. We need proper polling.

happydappy2 · 29/06/2018 09:42

I am heartbroken that we have a female PM & this shit is going on-womens sports being slowly eradicated-girl guides not safeguarding young girls-gender neutral changing rooms etc But I do think sanity will return-the fact that some male sexual predators also like to dress as women is a fact. Shame the trans lobby can't aim their vitriol at them rather than people who just wish to point out the potential dangers of allowing men into womens spaces.

Not stressed at all.

Self-declaration of sex will not enable men (or even transwomen) to gain access to female spaces such as refuges as the government has reaffirmed it is not changing the Equality Act and the exceptions within that act.

And as for women's sport - both the GRA and the EA exclude women's sport. So self-declaration will not affect it at all.

But interesting to see the number of women who are being mislead and caused unnecessary anxiety by these misleading posts - posts written by people who claim to be fighting for women's rights.*

Bollocks. All of these are already happening so don't fucking lie, it's adding insult to injury. These organisations (Girl Guides for example) are choosing to implement policies that ignore their right to maintain exemptions - because they are bowing to pressure from people like you.

Fantastic young girl Rowan.

Alexa488 · 28/06/2018 01:08

I'm fucking terrified for me for my kids for my grand kids...

mummabearfoyrbabybears · 27/06/2018 23:36

I'm furious about it, especially when I think how it could impact my teenage daughter Angry

R0wantrees · 27/06/2018 23:20

this was good to read yesterday:

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/genderneutral-toilets-my-daughter-was-called-selfish-for-wanting-girlsonly-loos-at-school

"The weeks passed and my daughter — along with others who were unhappy with the new loos — kept complaining, but their complaints fell on deaf ears. They were told to put up and shut up and think of others. As a parent, this felt wrong. Did only the transgender voice matter? What about my daughter’s voice? Shouldn’t both be listened to?

My daughter saw red. She started a petition for boys, girls and gender-neutrals to sign. Hundreds did. She insisted that a school council meeting be held and unisex toilets discussed. They were. And you know what? Eventually hers and other unhappy voices were listened to. And against the odds the toilets were quietly changed back to how they had been, with a smaller provision of unisex toilets kept for those who choose to use them.

It’s been a tough but fulfilling school year in which my child has learnt that if you’re passionate enough about something, you can effect change.

Don’t think for one minute, however, that she’s not sensitive to the transgender child. She is. She just wants everyone’s voices to be heard. It’s not about changing the law one way or the other. It’s about making sure that there’s provision for people of all genders or non-genders and that everyone feels comfortable everywhere."

R0wantrees · 27/06/2018 23:16

pinchpoint I've spent more time today talking rather than posting.

I'm also going to try and write a letter or email everyday.

Its been very refreshing. People get it very quickly... they've mostly had concerns but thought they were isolated ones.

BlackeyedSusan · 27/06/2018 23:11

also angry that there is not space to get away from abusive men. if they can follow you in by claiming female status that is not good. and they fucking would.

ChattyLion · 27/06/2018 20:27

When the 2nd person announced they were trans last week I just felt angry in all honesty, especially as the all Male department gave a round of applause afterwards.

Christ... Gender Apostate that is next frickin level. Clapping. So they have enough interest in this issue to publicly validate their brave and stunning colleagues but not enough interest to speak to female staff about their feelings about how their privacy, dignity and safety are affected at work.

The male senior management at my workplace just ignore the whole issue because it doesn’t affect them. Like your work place it is heavily male dominated and lots of us already feel beleaguered there as working mothers because they just don’t get any of that stuff either.

pinchpoint · 27/06/2018 12:14

I am alternately stressed and simmering with rage tbh.

Finally posting, after years of lurking, motivated by the forthcoming government consultation on gender self-ID. I want to add my voice to those critical of transgender ideology, its impact on women's rights and on the health and safeguarding of children. It angers and concerns me greatly that the claims of transgender advocates are destroying female-only opportunities and spaces, and with them the development, safety and dignity of women and girls.

When you see clearly what is happening, it feels like being painted into an ever-tighter corner. I join those who are saying 'No' and pushing back to assert our rights. It's encouraging that gender critical voices are beginning to make an impact. Now is clearly not the time to stay silent, hence I'm adding my tuppence worth.

GenderApostate · 27/06/2018 12:14

I’m pretty sure I’m the only one who knows about the toilet selfies, I did some detective work and found the ‘secret’ account after I found I was blocked, presumably by tef blocker - as he has no knowledge of my twitter, by their normal account which has workplace links on it .

Toilet selfies are actually the least of it, it also links to a ‘sw-itter’ account advertising home made porn photos for sale ! Plus moaning about being constantly misgendered in their customer facing role, despite the profile swinging between queer / non binary/ trans and other rubbish. He also seems to have severe mental health problems and has gone from shy and polite young man to wearing skimpy vests and full on mad
gan/ SF retweeter.
I’m keeping schtum for the moment - we are supposed to be getting new, self contained toilets. I don’t trust any of the managers to deal with the other stuff properly .

tobee · 27/06/2018 12:12

Also not stressed at all. I don't think many people will actually be directly affected

I don't want anyone to be directly affected at all for starters.

ISaySteadyOn · 27/06/2018 12:07

Hollow laugh at the idea that people using women's spaces for dubious purposes are prosecuted.

The more likely response, and I don't care if it makes me sound paranoid, will eventually be 'But you knew there were penises in there, what were you doing?'

So yes, I am angry and anxious.

NameChanger22 · 27/06/2018 11:57

I'm not in the slightest bit bothered.

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 27/06/2018 11:55

Any perverts using spaces for dubious purposes will be prosecuted as they are already

Naive to the extreme.

Dragoncake · 27/06/2018 11:49

Any perverts using spaces for dubious purposes will be prosecuted as they are already

Are they? Prosecution relies on sufficient evidence and police motivation. Prosecution rates are actually quite low.
