Statement on trans inclusion in a tweet from Diva, the UK's biggest lesbian magazine.
I'm pleased they've made their position clear, and support it.

If race or religion was being treated the same way, don’t yoi think there’d be media interest? Why not for sex?

Cos patriarchy

Every now and again I think we are making progress, and then I get these little (or not so little) reminders of the structural stuff that ensures women are simply not as important as men

Ereshkigal · 30/06/2018 12:46

Lol maybe because this

They need to get the protected characteristics right.

Bowlofbabelfish · 30/06/2018 12:45

That’s exactly what I mean oleanna

So many organisations are working as though the EA is changed. It hasn’t. But that hasn’t stopped lobby groups from forcing organisations to act as if it were.

Ereshkigal · 30/06/2018 12:45

The EA IS under threat - by bringing in self ID there will be a direct conflict with the EA set up. We have already seen multiple service providers capitulate to lobby group demands to put the exemptions aside

Agree.

enoughisenough12 · 30/06/2018 12:37

No is still a complete sentence.
Just saying....

OlennasWimple · 30/06/2018 12:35

TRA lobby organisations also seem to understand the conflict caused by self-ID, which IMO is why they have adopted the tactics that they have (changing sex to gender, punishing organisations that use the exemptions)

Pratchet · 30/06/2018 12:30

Why isn't it headline news

Then transwomen are in fact NOT allowed in all female spaces regardless of GRC (which no one is allowed to ask for anyway so it makes zero difference whether someone is pre, post having one or just fancies saying they’re female today.)

The EA IS under threat - by bringing in self ID there will be a direct conflict with the EA set up. We have already seen multiple service providers capitulate to lobby group demands to put the exemptions aside

... for example swim England, as highlighted by man Friday.

The government can promise solemnly to not change the EA but if self ID comes in then the conflict is set up.

There are a number of groups directly trying to replace sex with gender in the EA - the single piece of legislation that covers women’s rights in the UK.

Once sex is replaced by gender, ALL those rights are gone under law.

I am baffled as to why this isn’t headline news.

daimbars · 30/06/2018 12:12

Yes Bowl but the Exceptions / Exemptions are all the Equality Act and there is no plans to change the EA.

I 100% agree the EA should be upheld but there isn't any suggestion it won't be.

Which is trans women are legally allowed in female spaces both pre and post getting a GRC

No they aren’t, not as a blanket rule.

The law allows for exemptions/exceptions where proportionate and necessary. A space segregated by sex for safety purposes IS proportionate and necessary by its very existence.

daimbars · 30/06/2018 12:08

The law should be upheld as it is.

Consultations should be fair and transparent. They should reach a wide range of people, not just transactivists, students and informed radical feminists. The questions should be framed accurately, spell out what things mean in plain English not pomo jargon and above all it should be genuine and not a fait accompli.

Pratchet · 30/06/2018 09:10

My boundaries are not in the gift of a spurious consultation. My 'No' is not up for debate.

Bowlofbabelfish · 30/06/2018 09:03

The law should be upheld as it is. We all know what ‘consulting women’ means and it’s ‘we will be doing this, get on board.’

UpstartCrow · 30/06/2018 08:59

Being consulted is not the most important part. That ends in 'women should always have a say but no real power or autonomy.'

There is no good reason to abolish single sex spaces. There are enough women who want and need them to make them essential.

Go and fight for a third unisex space. Everyone can support that.

daimbars · 30/06/2018 08:46

It's like living with a tedious teenager.

And all the shouting of NO is like trying to reason with a room full of toddlers.

What I think is needed is extensive consultation with women. If it turns out the majority of women are not happy to accept trans women as women then we have to go with that majority. Same if the majority accept them. That is fair.

Being consulted is the most important part - women should always have a say and any petitions for more consultations with women I'll happily sign.

I believe (although not certain) that Stonewall only consulted trans people and not women when they put forward their proposals to amend the EA which is disappointing to say the least.

daimbars when you say

Perhaps that's why sex segregation doesn't feel so important to me - being with my male gay and trans friends always felt safer.

What do you mean my male trans? Trans women or trans men?

AngryAttackKittens · 30/06/2018 02:21

I mean, DH is the gentlest man I've ever known but how would a stranger know that?

Ereshkigal · 30/06/2018 02:16

No quite. Why would they? I feel the same about men I know and care about.

AngryAttackKittens · 30/06/2018 02:10

I feel very safe with my gay male friends too, but that's because they're my friends and I know them. I'd never expect another woman to assume that they're harmless to women just because I know that they are.

Thanks Daim. Sorry you went through that. I'm glad you understand why your feelings do not represent everyone either and that sex segregated female spaces are so important to me and many women, and the need for safety, privacy and dignity, looking at who is more violent and sexually violent statistically out of women and men.

UpstartCrow · 29/06/2018 23:19

A harmless trans women has doxxed all the Man Friday members and published their names online.

NewbieSpartacus · 29/06/2018 23:17

daim I'm sorry you were in an abusive relationship. However domestic violence isn't what we're discussing here, and your personal experience doesn't negate the ubiquity of male violence.

thebewilderness · 29/06/2018 23:15

Man in my changing room. I say excuse me this is the ladies.
He says I am a transwoman.

Then what do I say?

You do what women have always done for as long as I can remember.
You leave.
It used to be that women would leave and report the man in the ladies but according to the transgender advocates that is now illegal and so you might be charged with another female on female crime by the misogynists in blue.

TellsEveryoneRealFacts · 29/06/2018 23:10

Literally speechless. DARVO.
