3 strikes and you're out

Sorry to start this thread but I'm livid. I'm beyond livid to be fair.

I'm now on strike two and have been warned my posting privilege is at risk.

The reason for this thread is; please don't take the new guidelines at face value. I got a strike today for calling a man who presents as a woman a name NOT on the banned list. Obviously now I can't say what it was, I am effectively gagged.

I now have six weeks of no free speech until the strikes I have are wiped - again effectively gagged.

So, you won't see me much as I will NOT refer to men who present as women as the names we are allowed to call them, so will end up banned. I will post bland banal comments that can't offend any sensibilities here and let rip elsewhere where free speech is encouraged.

PLEASE, please, watch your words or MN will use this as a reason the close the FWR board.

I agree angry

I have seen that happen on the odd occasion but not that level of detail

AngryAttackKittens · 19/06/2018 10:55

I think it would be helpful to at least have some indication why a comment was deleted. "Deleted because named a person's sex" and "deleted because quoted previous deleted comment" and "deleted because blatantly trolling in the hopes of upsetting women and making them lash out so as to harvest screencaps for Twitter" and "deleted because threatened fellow user with physical harm" are all very different things.

HebeMumsnet · 19/06/2018 10:51

R0wantrees we'll find your email now and drop you a line.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/06/2018 10:50

Weetabii

Not sure if it was on here or another thread but I think the child who interpreted 'weetabix' as a plural, the singular of which should be 'weetabick' was correct.

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 19/06/2018 10:50

I would like posts to stand with a comment from mumsnet to say that it was out of order

But i still don't see anywhere on the rest of the forum this 3 strikes thing...

It is probably because MNHQ are still discussing how/whether to roll it out

ErrolTheDragon · 19/06/2018 10:48

So... perhaps we should make a Site Stuff thread and make a proposal for an enhancement something like this:

Report dialog box should include an option for the user to specify whether the offending post should be deleted or allowed to stand. It would remain the mods decision what to do (there could be multiple reports with different views, for one thing.)

If the post is deemed to have broken talk guidelines then it should have a big header inserted with an appropriate message from MNHQ, and perhaps have the text converted to red so its status is clear.

These posts would still count to the '3 strikes'.

Does that sound about right? Of course, it might take some time to implement but I'd have thought it would be feasible.

I think this matters.

You're right. It does. Let the unconscionable demonstrate itself.

LangCleg · 19/06/2018 10:24

Blush at derail. Soz! But I would cry if Rufus blanked me.

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 19/06/2018 10:17

Hey lang

That weetabix combo sounds absolutely foul Grin

R0wantrees · 19/06/2018 10:15

To be clear, I did report the poster elsewhere as I felt they were being goady and targetting other posters.

I asked them to consider my statement which they did.

They replied. (I understand why others would have reported that post but I did not)

I responded to their reply, as did other women affected.

This part of the thread makes no sense if Ghost's comment is deleted.

I think this matters.

LangCleg · 19/06/2018 10:14

MN i am ignoring...that dont even know they are being ignored

Will cry if you don't respond to my Weetabix musings.

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 19/06/2018 10:13

I report

Not everything, certainly not when i know that poster wouldnt want it reported

Someone was mean to me on another thread and they were reported by someone else and deleted. It did make me feel that not everyone felt that way

Its a shame i cant remember who it was...I usually bear a grudge and i would certainly have bore that one!! There are people on MN i am ignoring...that dont even know they are being ignored!!

R0wantrees · 19/06/2018 09:52

@HebeMumsnet
Please will you reinstate Ghost Tess's reply to me on this thread at

I think this matters.

HebeMumsnet · 19/06/2018 09:40

Morning, everyone. Thanks for your reports about the PBP here. We've shown them the door again.

LangCleg · 19/06/2018 09:29

What everyone else is saying.

Also - I genuinely believe MNHQ will come to regret this new policy, which silences women and has arrived just at the point the wider implications of extreme transactivist demands are beginning to penetrate into the public consciousness. A website for mothers should not, for example, be doing anything that might obfuscate discussion of the weakening of safeguarding frameworks for children. This is not being on the right side of history.

I would ask MNHQ to think again.

LaSqrrl · 19/06/2018 09:15

Oh, while I could create a new phpBB public (with private) environment, I really just don't have the time at the moment. I would love to do it though, because moderation can be done way differently.

If there are some experienced phpBB mods about, that can take the load, I am happy to build the framework.

I have tried some of these alternatives, don't luv them much, no, not at all really... (maybe I am just old school?)

LaSqrrl · 19/06/2018 09:11

AAK nailed it!

The whole model of deleting any comment that anyone might find offensive is flawed. We're not children who need our eyes covered. Leaving giant holes in conversations is confusing for anyone who reads them later, and in the case of particularly offensive comments actually protects the person who can then claim not to have said what they said.

Look, I've moderated forums before, delete is not really 'an option' (or at least, first option). It has always been my way to let stuff stand (unless revealing personal information). The way this is playing out, grown women are treated like naughty little children who must be punished.

I have not here, nor anywhere actually, reported 'comments'. Reporting is generally the sign of a coward tbh. Let it stand, let everyone judge what is going on. You cannot do that in a thread of swiss cheese. That is ridiculous.

I would way rather the pro-T crowd had their ridiculous comments stand, only to be dismantled by very clever women.

Bowlofbabelfish · 19/06/2018 08:19

Oh I’m staying - until I’m banned. MN is an amazing resource and it’s opened my eyes to so many things. This space is valuable and unique. I’m staying as long as I can.

I often wonder how all this will pan out and how we will look back on these years when we are far enough past them to analyse. I’ve thought this about many things - 9/11, the financial crash, brexit - when we have the benefit of hindsight how will we look back and say yes, this triggered this, and then this, and then this? How will history talk about these years since the millennium?

I think we live in interesting times. I can only act where I feel compelled to and speak up about things I think are wrong. If I look back on my actions in twenty years time I want to feel like I didn’t ignore something I felt to be deeply concerning.

AngryAttackKittens · 19/06/2018 08:06

I think the current response to the new guidelines will be very enlightening for those lurking journalists and politicians to read. This is what happens when women are told point blank that we will be punished for speaking the truth. We don't like it. We kick up a fuss.

Now picture that on a much, much bigger scale when it's not just the women here who realize what's being demanded of them, but every woman in the country.

Kettlepotblackagain · 19/06/2018 08:06

The whole reason we (society in general) are in this almighty mess is because everyone is too scared. Scared to offend, scared to say the wrong thing, scared to use the wrong pronoun, scared to speak the truth.

The trans movement took advantage of this PC, Post-truth, post- structuralist, facts are subjective' cultural hegemony and ran with it.

We are actually fighting to be allowed to speak FACTS. Scientific TRUTH. That's what it has come to. At the end of the day, we have nothing to fear because we have truth on our side.

The brilliant GC Feminists are grounding this movement to a halt and in the process they are revealing the Emperor Has No Clothes. We are revealing the true nature of organisations, who cares about women, who only cares about advertising revenue.

It's a fucking hard thing but we need to go through this process because it's revealing a shit of a lot about so many things...

FermatsTheorem · 19/06/2018 08:03

I on the other hand think we need to stick with MN. Journalists (Turner, Gilligan etc.) read MN. They point ordinary people who might otherwise be unaware of the attack on women's rights towards MN. And the extremists can't resist coming over here to tell us of our evil terfy ways - and as Datun points out, usually within half a dozen posts they've demonstrated such complete contempt for women that yet another handful of lurkers have seen with their own eyes what the problem is.

AngryAttackKittens · 19/06/2018 08:00

And yes, I realize that my first comment upthread will likely be deleted for insubordination. Don't care, as long as some people are able to read it first.

Bowlofbabelfish · 19/06/2018 07:59

This is one reason I very rarely report. I’d prefer to have the comment left standing. I’ve had a couple of pretty awful things said to me in the past including one very thinly veiled physical threat. Other people reported them and they were deleted but I actually prefer to let them stand so people can see.

The only posts I report for deletion are the ‘infertile/need a job/want money? Dr. Randomname can cast a spell just send a bazillion quid to ..’ or somesuch. Real spam basically. Or people peddling snake oil.

To me it’s more productive to let things stand in many cases. If one poster is making calm points and the other is threatening them then that’s a powerful message in itself.

I’m still wondering if this new crackdown is legally advised in response to a specific threat towards MN. I have absolutely no evidence for that, it’s just pure speculation.
