If I identified as trans - Eddie Izzard

I'd be seriously concerned that this person who claims to represent the trans issue is making a hash of said issue, and politics in general:

twitter.com/LOLabourLive/status/1007980764321939457
"I'm a member of the NEC. I've been a member of the NEC for about two weeks now. And I'm running for re-election right now, that's how relection works right now. ...I believe we have a slogan for the Labour Party, For the Many, Not the Few [what, you just found out Eddie?]"

Eddie in another LabourLive clip talks about 100 years of suffragettes "women, or , er, and transgender people...'2018. the end of the first world war. and er, we exist. so if you ever get depressed about the global situation draw a graph of human rights from ancient Eyypt...."

I used to admire Eddie for reclaiming stereotypical 'women's' clothing to represent the bandwidth of male.

Eddie seems to have recently swallowed the transgender agenda, and then got so confused that Eddie's not able to put together a coherent speech that doesn't involve ice-cream, ancient Egypt or, well, erm, I'm not sure. (And yep, you can shout at me 'it's just humour' but the 25 people amassed by the stage didn't seem to think it was humour either!).

It's Sunday, I've had a glass of wine, and this thread may not make sense, but I used to be a) a Labour supporter, b) a trans 'ally' and c) an Eddie Izzard fan.

WTF happened in the last couple of years that excluded some females from the above?

(Rhetorical question for many women on this board!)

From Izzard's wiki page 'He calls himself "a straight transvestite, or male lesbian".'

The former - fine. No problem, an honest bloke in a frock. But a 'Male lesbian'? Nope. That's not a thing, Eddie.

Picassospaintbrush · 17/06/2018 23:02

Fit's the late transitioning cross dresser DSM type- just saying.

Yambabe · 17/06/2018 22:57

It was Eddie that peak-transed me.

Eddie as a man who cross-dressed, wore makeup and didn't give a shit? Brilliant, ground-breaking and comfortable in his own skin.

Eddie as "trans"? Just no. You are precisely what trans isn't about. You don't represent my friends who have struggled and suffered to be who they need to be. You are precisely the problem that women have with the current trans umbrella. You are not a woman Eddie, you're just jumping on a bandwagon and people are falling for it cos you're a nice bloke.

I see you Sad

LaSqrrl · 17/06/2018 22:50

[2010]: He's a transvestite, heterosexual standup comic and actor

Yes, I used to admire Izzard's stance of "these are not women's clothes, these are my clothes"

So now I start to wonder about the magical power of clothing! Or it could be just the big green light for heterosexual men to embrace transgenderism because they can all keep their Laydee Penis now. And brag about it, endlessly.

Picassospaintbrush · 17/06/2018 21:57

I think he will struggle in politics. He will lose credibility by joking around badly all the time. I doubt he can make the transition.

pombear · 17/06/2018 21:57

agrumentative

I'm not sure whether your last comment was directed at me, but if it was, let's keep talking.

That's what is so saddening in this discussion right now, is that we can't keep talking as there are people (I have only witnessed the shut down on one side, transactavists, despite me looking on all sides for the discussion and, believe me, I'm looking for all sides of the discussion) who don't want us to talk about this.

I'm off to bed - you know, one glass and all! - but hopefully return to a respectful conversation in the morning.

I used to like Eddie. I liked the fact that he rejected dresses and make-up as being women's - he said that anyone can wear them. I remember him saying, "they're not women's clothes, they're mine." He described himself as a transvestite - a man who likes wearing dresses and make-up. He never claimed that any of that made him a woman.
Now he has declared himself as trans, are we supposed to see him as a man or woman? I don't understand what he's talking about any more.

Picassospaintbrush · 17/06/2018 21:54

Mmm yum, I haven't had a C de B for years! Delicious. I have a boring old Montepulciano.

argumentativefeminist · 17/06/2018 21:52

That comment was wrong of me and I apologise. I'm proud of every woman who does things that the patriarchy "inappropriate". I am glad you can share your opinions here even if I desperately wish there was more acceptance of the other side of the debate. I hope I haven't made you feel as if you cant share your opinions - infighting isn't ever the answer to guaranteeing rights for women. 🤝

Goldenbug · 17/06/2018 21:51

With regards to his comedy:
Eddie hasn't been particularly funny for a while now. I think he's lost focus and sidetracked into making points all the time he's just forgotten he needs to make his comedy funny.

pombear · 17/06/2018 21:51

Picasso Joining you.

Cremant de Bourgogne- needs a special top to stop the bubble escaping so I can have another glass tomorrow, without becoming that awful woman who might have 'another' glass tonight!

Eddie Izzard has the political nous of a buttered handrail.

pombear · 17/06/2018 21:49

argumentative I'm not sure if you say that in good faith.

But as a female who has had 1 glass of wine tonight, in a world where females are judged for every small behaviour that is not 'feminine appropriate', I will thank you in good faith.

We should be able to debate, when we disclose in humour how much alcohol we've drunk, without being judged whether we're allowed to debate or not.

Thank you for standing down on your agrressive position,.

Let's agree to disagree whether Eddie is trolling trans or not!

Just joining you in a glass of wine there Pombear.

argumentativefeminist · 17/06/2018 21:45

Of course you have a right and thankfully for you the mumsnet feminism board will continue to be a safe space for you to exercise that right. Smile

pombear · 17/06/2018 21:43

Yeah, so, Eddie's comments about the contributions of transfolk to the 100 years of suffragettes? Eddie, who didn't identify himself as 'trans' until last year?

And then, in referring to those 100 years stated 'We exist'.

I appreciate you have your own thoughts argumentative But you took me down very early in this thread when I was pondering why Eddie's ramblings would resonate with 'trans' theory seeing as Eddie's thoughts don't resonate with a lot of trans theory.

And then took me down for my humour around having a glass of wine, to denigrate me for drinking to much to debate with.

You don't know my identity 'if' points - as I don't know yours. But I know mine that come up hard against people like Eddie. Hence why I'm discussng the issue. And have a right to do so.

He's a twat and I've been saying it for years.

JuicySwan · 17/06/2018 21:42

He’s never been funny.

argumentativefeminist · 17/06/2018 21:39

I never said that he was a good speaker or that he wasn't bumbling. He was, it was boring, but I enjoyed some of the points he made. You wouldn't have, and that's fine. I commented to offer futher context to anyone who might find it useful, which you didnt, which is fine. I think we can move on now?

shiklah · 17/06/2018 21:39

I started a thread about this twat last year and made the papers..... just a heads up OP!

Picassospaintbrush · 17/06/2018 21:39

You are sounding a bit worse for wear yourself tbh there argumentative.

Like the barfly on the end stool, who rambles on making no sense whatsoever.

pombear · 17/06/2018 21:35

I'll still be waiting after my one (1) glass of wine for the clips that shows Eddie soaring beyond his bumbling (not fair, not yet prepared, hey, didn't know he was going to be talking at Labour LIve {hmm} that vindicate my terribly drunken (one glass of wine) take-down of Eddie!

argumentativefeminist · 17/06/2018 21:34

In your quotes in the OP, literally all Eddie talks about is his election and how we should recognise the contributions trans folk have made to history and the ongoing improvements in everyone's human rights. He was making small talk with the audience, not necessarily intending to make informative or meaningful political points. If you feel what he said was harmful, that's your prerogative, but we're destined to disagree on that. I think we were destined to disagree from the moment you decided to start a thread hypothesising on what you would think if you were trans. I dont hypothesize about whether I would have thought MLK was a good representation of the black community if I had been/was black. I can have my own thoughts on the topic without attempting to force myself into other peoples shoes, in a way that seems intended to invalidate the opinions of any actually trans people who disagree with you and whose opinions on the subject matter more in this case.

Kyanite · 17/06/2018 21:33

It sickens me that he made it onto the NEC. He is anti-Corbyn and now rewriting his own history...some of us are old enough to remember.

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 17/06/2018 21:32

Eddie Izzard, whose transition into Anne Robinson seems nearly complete

This is wonderful
