Mermaids has quite a reach. Influencing consumer groups.

The ease with which schools, workplaces and other organisations are being brainwashed is quite astounding

...gender identity is basically queer theory actually...

leyat · 16/06/2018 12:31

Our personalities reflect our socialisation and our response to that, as well as our humanity, and this is unique to is all. As i say those who advocate gender identity are pathologising what is just our personality. Of course we all have a personality and of course we are all unique, but it's not what gender actually is, gender is a system we are socialised by. Gender identity as an ideology ignores sex, asserts how our personality reflects femininity and masculinity is due to an innate essence rather than due to being a combination of just human triats and gender socialisation/response to that socialisation. It's utterly baseless, ignores science, sociology and feminism, and allows stuff like all male panels/boards/whatever to remain unchallenged cos 'we don't know their gender identities and we mustn't ask'. The while thing is a measure of narcissism and stupidity imo. Much like queer theory it's largely about the dull trying to feel special....

AngryAttackKittens · 16/06/2018 12:29

Sometimes you talk to them and explain that you don't feel this sense of being a woman that you're meant to feel and they go "OMG, I get it now, you're trans!". And then you sigh.

BeyondSceptical · 16/06/2018 12:27

The truly ridiculous thing imo is that "agender" is included under the trans umbrella; so trans organisations and campaigners clearly accept that some people can believe they have no gender identity, just not that the uncool mummies/aging women could possibly be in that group... Confused

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 16/06/2018 12:26

Jamieand, I think astrology is a good analogy. Unscientific woo.

Jamieandwordswo · 16/06/2018 12:26

The division between over and under 18 is simply one of time. Age is simply a material reality. The treatment and observation of age might be socially constructed, but age itself is not.

Bowlofbabelfish · 16/06/2018 12:26

I’m pretty sure I’m female because I have one baby in utero as we speak and another one snuggled up next to me who very definitely was gestated and birthed by moi.

Do I have a gender identity? Nope. Don’t think so. I get up in the morning, shower, put jeans and a t shirt on, feed the offspring, drive them to nursery, and work all day as a scientist. Then pick up offspring, dinner bath and bed. My husband, who is most definitely Male (I know this because he impregnated me with both said offspring) ALSO gets up, has a shower, pits t shirt on ... blah de blah blah. Same stuff. Similar job. Same clothes (I’m currently wearing his socks, god knows where mine are...)

Literally the only ways our days differ is that I’m pregnant. And that’s because I am female.

So no, I dont have a gender identity. I have a sex and a personality.

Nobody has EVER managed to explain to me what an innate gender identity IS. Not without circular logic, or invoking souls. Now I can get behind the idea that society has expectations of me, as a female, that they assume will be ‘me’ but that’s not innate.

If anyone can explain what am innate gender identity actually is, I’d be interested. Just no Cartesian duality or circular logic, Ta.

AngryAttackKittens · 16/06/2018 12:25

Like, yes, people absorb and then rather thoughtlessly regurgitate stereotypes about all kinds of things, and are aware of which ones apply to groups that they're part of. Why with "gender" are we trying to frame this as an internalized "identity" rather than just people absorbing stereotypes because they've everywhere?

HerFemaleness · 16/06/2018 12:25

@herfemaleness I seriously doubt being left or right wing is in our genes! And neither is gender. Innate - no. Observable- yes

I did make a mistake, it was progressive/conservative. They're not always synonyms for left/right wing.

I was surprised too, but I think it makes more sense than being born as a blank slate.

lurker33 · 16/06/2018 12:24

SarahCarer I'm not sure you can say that many people think gender is part of their own minds. I expect the vast majority of the population have never really thought about it and automatically conflate sex with gender. That was certainly my position not that long ago.

If people do think that gender is part of their own minds, then I have no beef with that. If they wish to live constrained by the box they have put themselves in, then that is up to them. What I do object to is being told that I must do the same.

AngryAttackKittens · 16/06/2018 12:24

This whole argument about how everyone/most people think they have a gender feels like an attempt to impose a framework that doesn't really fit. I'm not convinced that a lot of people buying into stereotypes means that they have a gender identity any more than people buying into stereotypes about their ethnic or cultural groups means that they have say an Italian identity.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 16/06/2018 12:23

The thing I keep coming back to is that the only thing that joins me to every other woman on the planet is my biology. This is true regardless of when or where I was born. Gender roles and expectations vary a lot. Sex doesn't. Woman is a reality. Like being a mare or a cow. Identifying as one when you're male doesn't even make sense.

BeyondSceptical · 16/06/2018 12:23

"subculture" is already a protected characteristic in some ways though isn't it? Wasn't it made one after Sophie's murder?

Personally I would have categorised GNC under "subculture" in the same way goth is, if i were in charge...

Jamieandwordswo · 16/06/2018 12:22

So gender identity is like astrology.

Astrology divides up human characteristics into twelve groups, and some people identify as being a Pisces, start to behave in a more Piscean way and expect others to behave as Librans or whatever.

I just have too many complex relationships, personal problems, needs for growth and change and survival requirements to reduce my self concept down to describing or categorising myself in relation to masculinity or femininity.

MsSensibleWay · 16/06/2018 12:22

I agree with BettyDuMonde "Those that believe, have it, and think it’s real and everyone who doesn’t is going ‘WTAF are you even on about?"

I don't understand the recent modern usage of the word identity and the phrase 'identify as'. I don't identify as things I just am them. I'm a woman because of my body.
I certainly would never have even considered the concept of having a gender identity left to my own devices.

BettyDuMonde · 16/06/2018 12:20

Can we get NY to add ‘Goth’ to the list of multiple protected gender identity, do you think? 🤓

LangCleg · 16/06/2018 12:19

But many many people think their gender is part of their own minds.

In exactly the same way many people believe they have a soul. Doesn't mean they have one.

LangCleg · 16/06/2018 12:18

Anyone in any doubt of the misogyny of a significant proportion of the MtF community should investigate the online communities in which posters make it all too plain that they identify as #transgirls/#girlslikeus because women are - or should be - a stereotypical fuck toy and that being, for example, subject to the kink "forced feminisation" is intrinsically degrading.

But AGP doesn't exist. LOL!

ImagesBeing · 16/06/2018 12:17

Many shoot themselves in the foot.

AngryAttackKittens · 16/06/2018 12:16

Someone probably ought to have told Jesus that I was a goth!

TheWrongTrousers · 16/06/2018 12:16

age does actually exist as a material reality whereas gender is a social construction

Age is at least partly a social construct too, though harder to pin down since it manifests as a gradual transition between stages rather than clear divisions. Clear divisions are social/legal impositions, e.g. under 18 vs. over 18 is arbitrary though we'd all agree there are big differences between 12 and 24. Didn't Simone de Beauvoir also write about age? (Admits to not having read it)

There are some big issues around age identity, e.g. refugees who flee from a culture where age is not closely tracked to one where it is who then have to prove they are under 18.

SarahCarer · 16/06/2018 12:15

Here here lurker I'm with you 1000% but we have to start where people are.

SarahCarer · 16/06/2018 12:15

Well true. But many many people think their gender is part of their own minds. So that's different from say the way they experience a rainbow

lurker33 · 16/06/2018 12:14

SarahCarer yes, I agree, we are forced to respond to gender. I don't see how anyone progressive can say forcing gender identities on people is a good thing.

Lets do away with forcing people into gender boxes and just let them act and dress in whatever way they like (normal caveats apply).

This is why I believe gender ideology is regressive.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 16/06/2018 12:14

It's dishonest to try to deny the fetishes connected to MtF transgenderism NotTerf, when the AGPs leave such mountains of material lying about. However the lie works when people believe their heated denials without checking for themselves.
