Apologies if this has already been discussed, but has anyone seen this video of Joe Rogan and others discussing trans athletes and women's sports? I think it was a good discussion and can't understand how someone could still scream bigotry at these very valid points. Hope the link works

I listen to Joe Rogan, I don’t agree with everything he says but he Is very open to listening to other people’s view points around issues. He has guests on that he doesn’t always agree with but he doesn’t use them to make himself look good, he often just hangs out and smoke weed and they talk about whole ranges of topics and issues. He did a really good interview with one of the exiled daughters of the Westboro Baptist Church.

I alway don’t understand the need to only listen to people that you agree with 100% of the time. People have different opinions and view points, it’s ok.

Italiangreyhound · 17/06/2018 21:02

Born male the thread is bout trans athletes.

Italiangreyhound · 17/06/2018 21:01

@Bespin surely the 'policing' comes in because some people have an additional advantage. I don't think this thread is specifically about intersex people. It's about those born make but competing against women. That's not fair on women, surely?

Bespin · 17/06/2018 08:14

The reduction in testosterone does not really effect trans woman as the levels are usually well below that figure so it as made no difference. It as effected a number of woman who have intersex conditions. These are woman who can now not compete. Throughout the Olympic history such rules have been used to police woman who are not female enough or womanly in what is the social norm. This is always the issue with policing woman's bodies in this way

Italiangreyhound · 17/06/2018 03:13

I like what he says about the Olympic organizers, I wonder why they are such authorities on anything!

@Ireneony
'As the IOC have just halved acceptable testosterone levels for female competitors, I wonder if the natural conclusion to the current thought on sports sex segregation may be to just start categorising people by their serum testosterone levels rather than by male/female.'

Who would that benefit and who would that disavantage?

'I wonder if this is what trans rights advocates would welcome.'

I think they would welcome something that supports their view.

'I don't think I would mind this system myself?'

Are you one of the athletes that would be advantaged or disadvantaged? Because to me this would massively disadvantage female athletes and I cannot see how that is scientific or fair.

'There needs to be more research though into the possible advantages of going through male puberty and training athletically as a male before transitioning and also the other size strength and weight advantages retained in a biologically male physique.' I agree but I think there the evidence is already there, it is not all about testosterone.

Strigiformes · 16/06/2018 18:23

I've watched a few of his video's about trans athletes. I think he presents the topic well and he's reaching a wide audience which can only be a good thing.

Ireneony · 16/06/2018 17:20

I don't want to make bedfellows with people who are very toxic and nasty, or are coming at this from an angle of hatred and fear. That's not what this is thankfully.

Rogan knows what he's talking about when it comes to MMA and this discussion is reasonable.

As the IOC have just halved acceptable testosterone levels for female competitors, I wonder if the natural conclusion to the current thought on sports sex segregation may be to just start categorising people by their serum testosterone levels rather than by male/female. For example it could be

Hi sorry don't have time to reply at the moment as blacking our boat but might come back later to this. Real life does get in the way. Just because someone says something you agree with does not make them a good person and there are a few issues with him. But I am. Not saying he is a monster, just that it's importent to know people's stand points

loveyouradvice · 16/06/2018 15:07

We have just got to embrace the more people saying the obvious - like it's just not fair someone with a male body beating the shit out of women (as Joe did) - the better........ and if that have big audiences even better!

We can't afford to choose our allies.... just peak trans as many as we can in every direction! And celebrate that the more people speak out, the more others will follow..... And that it is NOT a coincidence that it is the mavericks/far right/ etc who speak loudly at the moment while many of the progressives hesitate .... they will come round, as so many of us have

DisturblinglyOrangeScrambleEgg · 16/06/2018 15:02

DP listens to Joe Rogan a lot, so I've heard a fair few too - the podcasts veer from interesting interviews/chats to sitting there talking rubbish about things they clearly know very little about, to bizarre conspiracy theory level stuff (Joe seems to have some slightly out-there opinions on some things).

I wouldn't really hold him up as an authority on anything, and yeah, I don't agree with all of his thoughts around drug taking and conspiracy stuff, but he's no worse than anyone else, and he's willing to talk to lots of people and he's willing to jump in with his own opinions and talk, and that's not so bad.

loveyouradvice · 16/06/2018 14:53

*I don't think a man should be able to get his penis removed and then beat the shit out of women. Bottom line"

Enjoying the unintentional (intentional?) pun at the end.....

And yes, it is just common sense.... so why do the various sporting bodies not just recognise this?????? Still don't understand

Having checked out a bit more about Rogan, I see he's not a particularly great comedian and a bit of a meathead that says some stupid shit sometimes. Regardless I think the discussion is still a good one and he comes across well in it.

I hope so!

I'll just wait here for someone to come and tell me why it's completely fine for people born male to compete with females in physical sports. Genuinely interested as to how they reconcile this in their minds.

Polynerd · 16/06/2018 11:50

Well clearly he's the person to change their view from the inside!

Ireneony · 16/06/2018 11:48

Thanks polynerd sorry for delay in response! Interesting that he's a lib Dem considering their unquestioning stance on self ID

Polynerd · 16/06/2018 11:46

Finally found out. He is Maajid Nawaz, founder of Quilliam. I though he sounded like he has a really solid grasp of the issue. And - get this! - he's a Lib Dem!!! Grin Grin

Ireneony · 16/06/2018 11:45

Joe Rogan is the baldish American one. He is the UFC's top commentator on MMA.

The other people are Sam Harris, a philosopher and neuroscientist. The British man is an LBC presenter who's name escapes me just now.

Bespin can't or won't discuss the points being discussed in the video and so is instead attempting a character assassination to devalue Rogan's point of view. I just want to talk about people born male competing against females in sport and how that isn't fair. Don't really care about Rogan as a person.

Yes fms I said that probably wasn't the right word, I'm merely expressing how it seems to take men to explain the situation for other men to take it seriously - someone I know has been debating me in real life regarding this but has watched this video and a few others and now suddenly gets it. I appreciate that I used the term incorrectly.

I don't get this new fangled idea that you have to agree with everything a person has ever said EVER to agree with one thing they have said.

No I don't get this either. Why on earth should it matter.

fmsfms · 16/06/2018 11:23

@Ireneony "It's very mansplainy but we need men to discuss it."

How is a conversation between a group of 3 men - on a podcast no less where two of the men are invited for the SOLE purpose of discussing ideas and sharing their opinions, "mansplainy"?

Mansplaining is meant to mean "(of a man) explain (something) to someone, typically a woman, in a manner regarded as condescending or patronizing."

But people are now throwing it around any time a man dares to express his opinion, on his own blimming podcast!

ChickenMe · 16/06/2018 11:13

I don't agree with everything my Dad says, should I disown him?

Freespeecher · 16/06/2018 10:56

He obviously knows his MMA. On a phone so can't watch right now - is the one where he points out how weird it is that, when he raises his concerns about women getting the sh!t beaten out of them by fighters who were born male, he gets hold Hey! You're out of line!

I quite like Rogan - unlike many of the other talking heads he's not an academic or a writer (not that these are bad things of course), just an honest everyman trying to have a conversation.

jellycat · 16/06/2018 10:28

I think that’s a pretty fair assessment of the issue. I’ve no idea who he is or what other views he holds, but I don’t subscribe to the idea that disagreeing with someone about some of their views necessarily negates everything they say.

Ireneony · 16/06/2018 09:44

bespin I don't really have time to read reddit gossip but will have a look later. Regardless of potential negative aspects of Joe Rogan's character, did you watch the discussion and if so what aspects do you/don't you agree with?

I'm not here to idolise any particular person just to take part in an important debate around women's sports. I think the points raised in the video are fair. What do you think?

Juells I agree with you and despair for what will happen to women's sports if this is allowed to continue. This conversation is important.

Not clicking the reddit link because (like I tell the work gossip) I have my own mind and like to form my own opinions on people, but he completely makes sense in the op's link.
