They support ALL women don’t forget.

There is more. mobile.twitter.com/MunroeBergdorf?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor

And the response is overwhelmingly critical. The BFI have seriously cocked up here Smile

I saw a pic of a lot of the female speakers apparently "standing in solidarity" with MB on Transtwitter. Obviously none of the speakers wants to out themselves as agreeing with the unpopular pov by not standing on stage while most of them agree with it privately. You've really got to stick your neck on the line to admit to these things.

GeordieTerf · 16/06/2018 17:30

If she didn't turn up, then that's very unprofessional.

Mind you, based on her track record, it's not surprising.

Kettlepotblackagain · 16/06/2018 17:27

I just worry now that the spin machine will go into action and Munroe will use this for even more publicity.

More like a "women problem" Grin

PositivelyPERF · 16/06/2018 17:13

Gosh, that’s awful. I hope it wasn’t ‘women’s problems’. 😇

Cwenthryth · 16/06/2018 17:09

Well, according to Twitter, Bergdorf simply didn’t turn up.

Amy Desir on Twitter very kindly saying perhaps Bergdorf decided to show some integrity. Although MB was all over Twitter last night telling the nasty [anacronym forbidden]s off. So perhaps not. Someone else on Twitter ‘disgusted’ MB was ‘bullied’ out of the talk. Jeez.

UpstartCrow · 16/06/2018 17:08

Quite a balanced piece in the Guardian, Julian Vigo is quoted. They are not accepting comments;

Huffpost
'Trans Model Munroe Bergdorf Is Angry About The Average Life Expectancy Of Trans Women Of Colour' (MB says average is 35 years)

In the video interview MB talks about her time at all boys school, shows school phograph and describes childhood.
MB also says she "identifies as a transwoman"

Statement from BFI:

BFI Southbank’s Woman With A Movie Camera Summit will welcome over 35 women filmmakers, writers, artists, and cultural thinkers to speak about the role of gender and activism in cinema and media. This provocative day will hail courageous trailblazers of the past, champion new voices in film criticism and programming and explore movements like #MeToo and #TimesUp, all while celebrating the women who’ve defied the odds to make their mark on the international film and media industries.

For our keynote speaker we expressly wanted a voice outside of filmmaking that could widen the lens. We invited Munroe because she represents a contemporary and interesting perspective on the subjects of the day, and she will discuss her experiences as a trans-activist and the making of her recent Channel 4 documentary What Makes a Woman. The BFI is an inclusive organisation which welcomes people from all communities. We appreciate that Munroe’s involvement has provoked a strong and mixed reaction and we hope it will help further the gender debate in a positive and constructive way and encourage audiences to recognise and acknowledge the quality and value of difference, which we believe is a benefit to our industry and to our wider society.

Oh just fuck off.

Beachcomber · 16/06/2018 16:53

That's jolly tempting thewitchofwentworth.

I suspect we'd soon be told that it isn't in the spirit of MN and that perhaps we need to consider if it is the site for us....

thewitchofwentworth · 16/06/2018 15:47

Perhaps we can refer to Munroe as censored.

Munroe Bergdorf is a censored.
censored is censored and always will be censored.

Beachcomber · 16/06/2018 15:44

I wonder if we can refer to persons such as MB as "of the male sex caste"?

As in "MB wouldn't have been offered this role if they weren't of a member of the male sex caste".

Because that isn't referring to the person as male but of their place in a social hierarchy.

Serfisafleur · 16/06/2018 15:24

So....

MB flounced? Didn't speak I think.

Anyone able to update?

ShotsFired · 16/06/2018 15:17

And of course "identity" comes top and f the list.

Just a nice subtle (sledgehammer subtle) way to remind actual women it's all about how you feel, not what you are.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 16/06/2018 15:14

As far as I can work out, this entire thread may contravene the new guidelines. How are we supposed to discuss our outrage over this story if we aren't allowed to refer to MB's biology and history as a man - i.e. to misgender MB?

Otherwise it's women object to woman... Same as the Connecticut athletes. It's the sex of the participants that matters, not their gender identity.

Tinycitrus · 16/06/2018 14:04

Surely there are women film makers out there? Are there?

Because if MB was the only choice the. What does that say about women in film? That it’s a pretty dreadful situation perhaps?

AntiqueOlive · 16/06/2018 13:28

I spent most of my career ( before re-training 5 years ago) in the film industry. My Dh also works in film/tv and it's looking likely that my kids will follow .

I left the industry because it was impossible to sustain family life .

MB does not widen the lense. MB gives a voice to racism and personifies the misogyny and anti-woman friendly working practices within the film industry.

MB has gone straight to the front of a queue most women find themselves in all their working days within film/tv.

MB does not speak for me.

ResistanceIsNecessary · 16/06/2018 13:23

Munroe says that Munroe is not a threat to women. I do not agree.

Munroe is someone who has:

  • benefited from male privilege
- no lived experience of what it is like to experience sexual discrimination due to being female; such as being considered a 'pregnancy risk' during job interviews
  • no lived experience of growing up female - and the societal expectations and shaping around that

And Munroe has taken a space which is designed to offer a woman a voice. Munroe has appropriated something to which they are not entitled. If Munroe cannot understand why women and feminists are angry about this, then Munroe is absolutely a threat to women because of their lack of self-awareness in taking something that is not theirs to have.

StarsAndWater · 16/06/2018 13:08

ALL women says Munroe. I'm guessing that excludes those with uteruses because Bergdorf has mentioned a few times that they find the talk of female biology to be exclusionary.

PositivelyPERF · 16/06/2018 13:04

Can someone please show me a link to the Lisa Twitter? I can’t find her comments regarding that person who took the women’s space.

annandale · 16/06/2018 13:02

I have never thought of feminism as something that includes or excludes people. It is a way of analysing the world. It's just that once you look at a group of men and women so traumatised by sexualised bullying, abuse, toxic masculinity, in some cases racism and internalised homophobia that they will get their genitals cut off and torture their bodies relentlessly to be different from the lost children they once were - you see all over again what feminism really should be about. It's not OK for women to only be seen as women with value if they wear boned corsets or bind their feet, and that was the case in the past. It's not OK for men or women to be accepted only if they develop huge circular unlactating tits and burn their hair follicles individually with lasers.

It's also not OK for Bound by the Wachowskis to be seen as a sexploitative thriller with pornographic elements when made by men, but for it suddenly to be regarded and no doubt counted as 'a lesbian film made by women' when its directors transition. Perhaps Munroe would like to talk about that.

MyRelationshipIsWeird · 16/06/2018 12:58

These individuals who have zero self awareness, have absolutely no shame in taking spaces and places intended for women - when we know there's a women cast aside to enable this nonsense. It's such a male thing to do - rock up far less qualified than a woman & have zero shame in taking something that isn't for you, you aren't qualified for & have no business being involved in. Men have been doing this forever. They're now getting woke cookies for it.

Utter narcissistic twat.

PlectrumElectrum you have nailed it. This is why we're all fucking fuming!!!

Ifonlyus · 16/06/2018 12:45

"^Feminism does not need to include everyone. FFS. It needs to include all women - by that I mean, all XX, cunty, potentially-child-bearing humans. The biological class generally known as women.
Feminism is simply not about the rights or representation of XY, be-penised, impregnating humans, however they identify, behave, present, call themselves or modify their bodies. They can have their own movement(s) and spaces, they bloody should, but stay the fuck out of women’s spaces.^"

Well said. I concur.

Ereshkigal · 16/06/2018 12:40

don't think they would prefer 'a man' at all. I think it's because what / who she is now is flavour du jour. And good for publicity.

Publicity and virtue signalling.
