Now, more than any time since the fight for the vote, women are having to fight.

FGM. Unequal pay. Sexual harassment. #MeToo. Mental load. Women's spaces. Pink toys. Sport. Caring responsibilities. Unconscious bias. Sector limits. Forced marriage. Prostitution. Exploitation. Femicide. Domestic violence. Maternity leave.

The list doesn't end.

I've brought some ribbon : green (give) white (women) violet (votes). (Good shades at the works right now). I'll be making up something subtle, both to celebrate the Suffragettes and thank them for what they did, and as a symbol of my commitment to keep fighting. And a reminder, I'm sure I'll need it.

I hope some of you will join me.

There are loads of great websites, but can I personally recommend these as I helped to create them Smile

treasures.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/
wih.web.ox.ac.uk/suffrage-wall

You'll find Carrie and Justine on the modern suffrage wall!

Other great ones are:
National Archives: www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/suffrage-100
LSE: www.lse.ac.uk/library/suffrage18
Museum of London: www.museumoflondon.org.uk/discover/suffragettes
Google: artsandculture.google.com/project/road-to-equality
Cambridge: www.cam.ac.uk/suffrage

Happy to suggest more if you'd like them.

I can recommend exhibitions at the Museum of London, Manchester People’s Museum, the National Archives, the Weston Library in Oxford and the soon to be opened one in parliament. I’m a historian and can recommend resources, websites and anything else. We MUST remember the suffragists and suffragettes, heroines all.

MipMipMip · 26/06/2018 20:05

I have passed on the thanks. Smile

Think I might have to get over there myself sometime. She said the display is up until September so it gives me time if I give myself a kick up the arse!Grin

Ok, I got someone who lived near to pop in to find out more. They got into it and took loads of pics so I'm share some (not all or is reach my limit!)

The book was called Ruthless Rhymes for Heartless Homes by Harry Graham. I've had a look online and the book is now considered socially important! You can download some of his stuff but unfortunately the version of RR4HH is American and doesn't include the suffragette one. www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/36702

Great ideas. I have just realised that the baby blanket I am working on for imminent grandbaby is in purple, green and white. Chuffed about that and have no idea why I didnt make the connection sooner.

concretesieve · 24/06/2018 09:53

The parade looks fun ! What is the book with the anti-suffrage poem, please ? (I 'm nosey love old books.)

MipMipMip · 23/06/2018 20:48

Sorry, that's hard to read

When a child of tender age
I'd a monkey in a cage
Now I have no need for pets;
Mother's joined the suffragettes.

I've found out there were several different suffragette organisations and many had their own colours. They eventually pretty much merged into the one we know and love. But you can lay claim to LOTS of colours being for women's votes. Grin

Ah, the humour of men who don't like women having a voice.

Theres some lovely ideas here. My daughter wants to make friendship bracelets (some great youtube videos available). I might take the opportunity to indoctrinate her and use the above colours!

Was very impressed.

She sounds truly remarkable. I have no doubt you're proud of her but I reckon she'd be pretty proud of you too.

TressiliansStone · 21/06/2018 18:56

Well I knew she was hoping to stand for parliament in 1930, so I reckoned she would have been busy before that! Grin

My dad, who used to go stay with her in the 1960s, says she was known by everyone in her town, and obviously held in considerable affection. She was very adept at organising and getting people on board. I know that during WWII she carried on teaching in a much-bombed city, and also worked supporting refugees.

I don't think I can live up to her achievements – but she makes me want to try.

MipMipMip · 21/06/2018 18:38

Wow! That is incredibly cool Stonè.

^ that's awesome to find out.

TressiliansStone · 21/06/2018 16:37

The British Newspaper Archive has added the suffragette newspaper The Common Cause to the online collection. It's fascinating reading.

Subscription to access, unfortunately, but you can find it here: www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/titles?title_search=common+cause

And I've just found one of my family in it! I've long suspected she was involved, from what else I know of her, but it was amazing to see her name leap out.

MipMipMip · 21/06/2018 16:22

Now I've got the ribbon I may just plait a bracelet for when the other isn't suitable.

Found out there's a suffragette parade in a town not too far away If I get up early. Trying to find out the time.

If anyone hasn't yet seen the Lucy Worsley documentary film on the Suffragettes, I can't recommend it highly enough.

I was really well done. My husband watched it too, like the good feminist he is, but even he was shocked by the forced feeding scenes. He knew it happened, but had no idea how brutal it was.
