Why is misgendering a big deal?

FortunateCookie · 11/06/2018 10:30

Hope someone can help because I’m really trying to understand why not affirming someone’s identity is that big of a deal.
I understand that it’s polite to go along with whatever someone’s chosen gender identity is, but I can’t believe that it’s actually a big problem if you don’t?
Surely if your friends and family accept your identity, it doesn’t matter if someone at work doesn’t?
Would it really make someone suicidal?
Do any of the trans organisations say why it is so important?
I just don’t get it.

The self-deception/arrogant part refers to men who fondly imagine that most women agree with them.

Datun · 12/06/2018 13:16

"When you ladies start using correct pronouns and correctly gendering and sexing people, I will answer questions."

Fuck that.

Again. No.

Clear?

Exactly. I often can't work out if it's self deception, or blind arrogance. But very many women who would never have considered themselves particularly feminist, and certainly not radical feminists, are holding the opinion that you can't change sex and men do not belong women's prisons or sport. They are consequently rather shocked that this makes them radical anything.

You will often get a poster telling us we are transphobic, but agreeing, in the very next post, that sport is a different issue, of course, and yes rapists should not go to a female prison, obviously.

It's rather a blinding shock when they realise that this makes them a gender critical radical feminist, and a 'terf'.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 12/06/2018 13:13

I've always defined myself as a feminist and I'm a radical feminist because I understand women's liberation as being based on our oppression as a sex. But that was the only sort of feminism that was about in my childhood and adolescence.

The new choosey choice feminism doesn't qualify as feminism at all to my mind because it lacks any intellectual underpinnings. It's feminism to please men - lap dancing is sooo liberating for me and suchlike bollocks

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 12/06/2018 13:07

Didn't even know what radical feminism was until I heard of Lila Perry and the magic miniskirt.

'Gender critical' is probably a term that women started to use because they are a bit taken aback about being called in your usage TERF by you lot and then asked 'What the fuck is a radical feminist?'.

Many women, including me, would have loosely defined themseves as femininst but not have had any idea of categories of feminism until the madness of trans activism reared its misogynist head, and started to say things like, oh, for example "When you ladies start using correct pronouns and correctly gendering and sexing people, I will answer questions."

Fuck that.

Again. No.

Clear?

Datun · 12/06/2018 13:02

Ha ha!

So you're not going to answer questions unless we obey.

When you are called out on that, you say that we are the only type of feminist to refuse to obey, because you know other feminists who are very compliant.

All your posts are characterised by something that is often associated with MRAs. A constant, let's call it finessing (or rewording), of a situation so that it becomes hypothetical.

The reality is you are on a feminist board, telling women that unless they obey you, you won't engage.

You can rework that into a fiction that says something else, as much as you like.

We see you.

GibbertyFlibbert · 12/06/2018 12:43

What dominates here is gender critical feminism. That's just one branch of feminism and, for many women, not a very comfortable one.

Women who are not gender critical are a still feminists. In this echo chamber that gets lost - but it is true.

TERFragetteCity · 12/06/2018 12:42

Also, as you well know plenty of feminists agree with me

Would those be them blokey ones...like the ones who wear 'this is what a feminist looks like' t-shirts and then campaign to close down refuges if they don't let men in...even though they never campaigned for the refuges for actual cunty type women in the first place?

Yeah well, there is a reason for that. Lol.

ALittleBitofVitriol · 12/06/2018 12:40

Lol, epic!

I don't know what kind of ladies you've been hanging out with, but real Ladies don't go around randomly sexing people! clutches pearls

Serfisafleur · 12/06/2018 12:37

I have no problem correctly sexing people Wink

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 12/06/2018 12:36

Theyre the wrong feminists Gromit!!

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 12/06/2018 12:34

Funny that you are not getting many feminists agreeing with you here, on the feminist board

Are you going to demand that we do feminism your way too before you 'answer questions'.

It must be hard being you.

Hoppinggreen · 12/06/2018 12:31

It’s the Feminist board you muppet

Datun · 12/06/2018 12:20

This bit is - it's feminism chat.

You've actually come onto a feminist chat board and demand women obey you, and then followed up by saying many feminists agree!

GibbertyFlibbert · 12/06/2018 12:12

"Although I agree with Prawn that demanding women's obedience on feminist forum is a bit of a 'read the room, dude' moment and you might as well leave, personally I'd like to thank you for your posts and your presence, as it has highlighted not only the flaws in the ideology, but the relentless demand for female compliance in the face of male dominance."

MumsNet is not, by its own declarations, a feminist forum.

Also, as you well know plenty of feminists agree with me.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 12/06/2018 12:06

When you ladies start using correct pronouns and correctly gendering and sexing people, I will answer questions..

Aaaand, there you have it. That's what it's all about.

The answer is no. To all your demands of women.

Cheerio now.

Ereshkigal · 12/06/2018 11:57

personally I'd like to thank you for your posts and your presence, as it has highlighted not only the flaws in the ideology, but the relentless demand for female compliance in the face of male dominance.

Agree.

Hoppinggreen · 12/06/2018 11:53

Ladies, do as I’m demanding and only then will I afford you the basic courtesies
Fuckety bye

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 12/06/2018 11:51

When you ladies start using correct pronouns and correctly gendering and sexing people, I will answer questions

I'm glad I'm not the only one to see the irony in this

Datun · 12/06/2018 11:39

When you ladies start using correct pronouns and correctly gendering and sexing people, I will answer questions.

Correct pronouns - I can't know what that is until I have met and spoken to a person who requires use of a pronoun that does not accord with how they appear. So sue me for not being a mind reader!

Correctly gendering - can't ever do that. No matter how hard I try I can't know how someone who believes and actively lives within a gender would label themselves. Even if you only use facebook as your guide, there are at least 73 genders. The chances of my pulling the right one out of a hat is absolutely 0%

Sexing peole Ooer misses Smile But as I can only go on appearance, again that is always going to have an element of chance.

So, well, bye then !!!

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 12/06/2018 10:43

When you ladies start using correct pronouns and correctly gendering and sexing people, I will answer questions.

Then we are at an impasse, Gibb. If you're not going to engage unless we all lie to you, then you're not going to engage. Might as well just piss off, stop wasting people's time.

TERFragetteCity · 12/06/2018 10:41

When you ladies start using correct pronouns and correctly gendering and sexing people, I will answer questions.

Lol. It's because you know that you have no answers. Why should your ability to answer questions rely on our 'being nice'?

Again, another abuser's tactic. Thick and fast.

DailyMailClickbait · 12/06/2018 10:38

When you ladies start using correct pronouns and correctly gendering and sexing people, I will answer questions.

You assume that everyone is a lady.

It's already been explained that feminists don't believe in gender constructs.

We are already correctly "sexing " people:
XX = female
XY = male

DailyMailClickbait · 12/06/2018 10:37

Like telling lesbians that their refusal to accept the concept of a "lady penis" is discriminatory and that they are bigoted genital fetishists for not wanting to have sex with male bodied persons?

Like telling a woman who has requested a female HCP for a smear test that she is a bigot for refusing to accept a man who identifies as a woman?

Like having to spend thousands on legal fees to defend a law suit from a male bodied person who wanted to be a rape counsellor in a female-only rape refuge?
