I've searched the Web but can't find this phrase used anywhere else. This page came up on the Connecticut sports thread.

What is a cis child do you think?

Was at a kids tennis competition yesterday. Top boys and girls in our area. The boys are just so much stronger and faster - even at 10. I want my daughter to compete on a level playing field (court), in a girls competition.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 11/06/2018 10:04

No Jaffa, she is a gay woman!

Bowlofbabelfish · 11/06/2018 10:02

Oh do that samphire :)

I’d love to see the ethics committee minutes on these ...

CuriousaboutSamphire · 11/06/2018 10:00

Sadly no, Bowlof he was a newbie lecturer 18 years ago and was an absolute stickler for non nuanced, unbiased research proposals. I only worked with him for a couple of months, and then at a remove. He is 2nd on one of the projects, so I am not sure he is anything other than an overseer, it certainly wasn't his area of interest... though I can see how he has moved to it, perhaps...

But I could pop in to see my old mentor, now a Professor and see what she makes of it Smile

From the level of PhD grant I think the sports one is also research council funding.

Research institutions can either apply for just PhD grants or for 'full economic costs' of the project (they get 80% of the costs funded if successful). Details here.

One of the projects involves working with Nottingham Centre for Transgender Health so there may also be NHS funding involved.

NotAnotherJaffaCake · 11/06/2018 09:41

Is Elizabeth Peel transgender?

I think this is one for Loughborough’s ethics in research committee, no? I’m sure someone who is so committed to diversity would have no problem taking a deeper look at their own biases to ensure integrity....

Bowlofbabelfish · 11/06/2018 09:33

Caster semenya is not transgender.

samphire that is interesting. Do you know them well enough to talk to them about this?

InfiniteSheldon · 11/06/2018 09:20

So I'm going to work ,paying tax and that money is being used to erase my rights?

Macareaux · 11/06/2018 09:20

Is there any gender critical mumsnetter who doesn't have a twitter or Facebook account in her own name full of vile terfish nonsense that would out her and who fancies putting "Dr" in her title?

Terfulike · 11/06/2018 09:14

Funding by UK taxpayers then

I'm a bit late in but I was gong to say how badly written that is... it will show, will it?

I'd never have got that past Ethics! And I am surprised that Loughborough is being so lax or so lazily political... 6 PhD students to explore the current and changing landscape of sports participation for transgender adults and children and recommend changes to promote inclusive participation.

I now a couple of the supervisors... I am very surprised at one of them. He never used to be quite so relaxed about research terminology! Most egregious is talking about the portrayal of transgender sporting elite and using Caster Semenya as their example of "gender-diverse sports personalities" They'd have been better off not using anybody... but probably haven't as all the others carry highly negative connotations!

If you read through the 5 studies, they all state that they are looking to make changes in order to support transgender athletes into sport... they aren't fact finding in the broadest sense, so they will find what they are looking for and will probably present it as "This is what is needed to get what is wanted for all athletes"

Different project - Are the traditional gender distinctions of male and female an outdated concept in modern-day law?

Professor Elizabeth Peel, of Loughborough’s School of Social, Political and Geographical Sciences, said: “The research aims to assess and generate public debate about our current system for determining legal gender.

“I am particularly excited about understanding people’s attitudes towards our gender system and whether and how people think gender could be legally recognised in different ways, or perhaps not at all.”

One project aim is to develop a draft bill to provide a focal point for discussion of legal reform.

This will present the best case for reform and demonstrate what legal change could look like and mean.

£724,000 funding from Economic and Social Research Council.

Meant to include <a class="break-all" href="//link::www.wsj.com/articles/paul-mchugh-transgender-surgery-isnt-the-solution-1402615120" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">link::www.wsj.com/articles/paul-mchugh-transgender-surgery-isnt-the-solution-1402615120

UpstartCrow · 11/06/2018 09:04

Surely the existing sports results is the data you need to conclude that in some sports, sex segregation is fair for women.

Oh I see the problem they have with that now.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 11/06/2018 09:03

Not disputing that some conservatives seem to prefer a trans girl to a gay son, but one very conservative voice in the USA opposing transgender is the eminent psychiatrist Paul McHugh. My DPs know him quite well.

He's debunked medical fads before. He worked to expose recovered memory syndrome, in which unscrupulous therapists convinced vulnerable patients that they'd been abused as children.

Bowlofbabelfish · 11/06/2018 09:03

jaffa I cant see one listed. It’s be interesting to ask who/what funds the individual projects and where the funding for the centre comes from.

Terfulike · 11/06/2018 08:54

Absolutely but the aim of the study seems to be"Given that unisex sport is obviously a good thing, how can we push it mainstream into every sport" rather than "is there a basis for unisex sports" or even " which sports are suitable for unisex and which are not" based on evidence.

I don't think it really counts as research as you're not really exploring an existing phenomen. They might as well be asking "how can turn voters towards the Lib dems" or something

Yes I wonder how many studentships there are for women participation

Oh, I’m sure they’ll say women are well represented by men pretending to be women

NotAnotherJaffaCake · 11/06/2018 08:50

Who's the funding body?

LangCleg · 11/06/2018 08:49

This isnt a research project, its a propaganda drive.

YY.

Anyone beginning to get Gilead vibes?

DailyMailClickbait · 11/06/2018 08:47

there's evidently a lot of money washing around in transactivism.

Yup. Big pharma has a substantial interest in this because it means life-long hormones and medication.
thefederalist.com/2018/02/20/rich-white-men-institutionalizing-transgender-ideology/

I suspect that it's gaining traction as well from conservative individuals, who find the concept of "transgender" far more palatable than being gay or lesbian. Ever wondered why Pakistan and Iran allow transgender rights and reassignment, but still criminalise being gay or lesbian?

NotAnotherJaffaCake · 11/06/2018 08:47

Have they done an impact assessment on women? Can't believe this madness is being funded.

Bowlofbabelfish · 11/06/2018 08:46

I'm a bit confused. How can they decide what the study will show before they ve undertaken the study. That's hugely biased isn't it.

Nail. Head.

This isnt a research project, its a propaganda drive.

ScaredPAD · 11/06/2018 08:44

I'm a bit confused. How can they decide what the study will show before they ve undertaken the study. That's hugely biased isn't it. What of a researcher concludes there's good reason for male and female separate sport..
