How can the NHS cope?

Hi all, I haven’t seen any threads regarding how the NHS can cope with the explosion of demands for trans treatments, but do correct me if I’m wrong - I’m new, have only been lurking for a few months. Also I won’t be responding til this evening as I will be out all day, so apologies for that. I have a lot more to say!
But I will out myself as working in the NHS and I really worry about the implications in lots of ways. It’s not even on the radar in my little backwater.
Here is a link to an article in the telegraph earlier this week.
www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/06/04/nearly-two-million-britons-expected-question-gender-health-boss/

Unlike James Palmer I definitely don’t see it as a good thing. My own area has another £6m to save next year, is making further cuts to IVF treatment and I’m sure there are plenty of Mumsnet users who have been denied nhs fertility treatment. Dr Christian has campaigned vigorously for PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis to prevent HIV), and also for HOV vaccines for boys (which I support and is denied for cost reasons). HCAs working in our community area are being “asked” to take a pay cut. Another thread this week discussed cuts to sexual health and contraception services. I could go on, perhaps better not, I’m angry and in a hurry!

I checked various NHS websites, can't see anything about Guy's doing SRS.

They do say sex is 'assigned' at birth. Why can't they get that right? Using this verb, with an implication of randomness/decisions made by others, contributes to the 'biology is a social construct' view.

SupermatchGame · 08/06/2018 19:48

My 5yo DD was very delayed, massive stammer interfering with day to day stuff and making her miserable.
If referrals are taking longer due to extra demand then yes it is affecting children.

So in your case that would be a referral to a paediatric speech therapist. Nothing to do with the speech therapists who see adult trans people or the waiting list.

Of course male to female trans teenagers who transition earlier and avoid the effects of their natal hormones will usually have no need for speech therapy.

I sit on many budgeting committees for the London Hospitals as as yet have never heard of Guys doing this surgery so please enlighten me so I may take this up with the relevant people.
Surely you should have sufficient resources to find out on your own if you choose not to believe the worker bees experience.

Theswaggyotter · 08/06/2018 17:35

It’s not just the post surgery/ hormones regret we have to worry about. Current screening guidelines mean that transmen will not be offered cervical or breast screening regardless of whether they retain cervix or breasts - this will lead to late cancer diagnoses.
Transwomen with prostate cancer may also suffer delays if they ‘pass’ because all record of them being male has to be removed from their records. Similar picture with transmen / ovarian cancer. I find this deeply worrying and feel it will worsen health outcomes for trans people.
Medical professionals are being forced to collude with biological lies and this is to the detriment of all health conditions related to biological sex

"As I am a woman, this seems just the place for me to talk. You do realise that there are women who disagree with you? Yes? Well here I am :-)"
So refreshing to see another woman that disagrees with the majority of others on this Feminism Chat, I am a woman as have my own opinions, and have fought hard to achieve where I am today, as a woman in male dominated career,

Giddy99 · 08/06/2018 12:35

"At Guy's they do SRS. A referral is given priority over scheduled cancer surgery. "

Since when has Guys been doing SRS surgery, I would be very interested to know, and do you have actual proof that SRS surgery at Guys is taking priority over cancer surgery,
I sit on many budgeting committees for the London Hospitals as as yet have never heard of Guys doing this surgery so please enlighten me so I may take this up with the relevant people.

You keep posting that link with a less than 50% success rate as though that is a good thing. It is abysmal. Horrific. Dreadful. Malpractice.

thebewilderness · 07/06/2018 22:24

Although isn't it the case the around 80% of transgender people decide against surgery? I can see that talking therapies and drug treatments will cost the NHS - but surgeries may not be performed as much as all that.

No, that is referring to genital surgery, called SRS.
Many who keep their penis for use in their sexual relations get breast augmentation and facial feminization surgeries. Scraping the adams apple and softening the jaw line as well as hair transplants for the head and removal on the face.
Jenner is a celebrity example of thousands spent on feminization without any change to genitals. There are a number of internet famous TIMs who have gotten hair transplants and facial feminization and chest implants but no SRS.

Access to healthcare should be universal. Healthcare should be free at the point of use and based on need.

Precisely. “Need” is the bottom line of all financial debate when establishing priorities.

Of course I believe in free healthcare at point of use, but the NHS is a bottomless pit and I can’t see how anyone can expect it to operate outside any form of financial control. There needs to be public debate, some treatments need to be prioritised over others.

I’ve been thinking about the speech therapy today Merchfach.
I may have had a couple of 🍷and be suffering from a touch of hanger due to supper running late. But it makes me pretty cross. Surely these are acting classes? As paid for by lots of people who find they need help with public speaking. Why the hell is the NHS paying for this? Speech therapy is definitely one of the areas that attracts the attention of the red pen when the books need balancing and this must undoubtedly impact services for children, stroke sufferers and others.
Acting classes have no place on the priority list in my view.

Yup - I have real concerns about this.... I do want those with genuine full-on gender dysphoria to be able to transition as they previously have....

I DO NOT WANT masses of youngsters having regret 10 years later when they realise what they've done - I've read heartbreaking accounts, and I'm particularly thinking about transmen here where so often it seems body-hatred, abuse, uncomfortable being a butch lesbian, autism and mental health issues seem to be part of the picture....

The other thing no one seems to be taking into account is that for these post-op transwomen I imagine as elder care or even just in later life there are huge costs and far more complex than those who haven't played around with their biology

Let alone the costs of sending smear requests to transwomen to validate their existence!

SupermatchGame · 07/06/2018 18:35

Picassospaintbrush · 07/06/2018 18:34

Picassospaintbrush · 07/06/2018 18:32

Wakame, more on the John Travlolta theme.

SupermatchGame · 07/06/2018 18:31

More scaremongery. Trans people are going to break the NHS now.

But I will out myself as working in the NHS

I doubt that. And if you do perhaps you're in the wrong job. You might want to think about your own values and attitudes and whether or not they align well with your current employer's?

placemats · 07/06/2018 17:50

But gender disorder is no longer going to be recognised Wakame under the new self id. It's no longer deemed a psychological defect to be trans.

However, this rise in 'gender identity crisis' which is now trans is being treated under the NHS. One has to ask where the money is being transferred from. Certainly there is no more money being given out.

Wakame · 07/06/2018 16:53

"a place in which women talk"

As I am a woman, this seems just the place for me to talk. You do realise that there are women who disagree with you? Yes? Well here I am :-)

LangCleg · 07/06/2018 16:50

Or you could explain why this is nothing like Farage's argument about being late because of immigrants. You know - break down the analogy. Otherwise people might think you people have right-wing tendencies. I mean you'll be posting articles from Catholic websites and the Daily Mail next

Asked and answered at least three times a day on multiple threads. As you'd know if you read anything here before vandalising a place in which women talk without your supervision.

Try new arguments or new places to make them. Ones where men are. Or is it only women not allowed to talk without your lordly supervision?

LangCleg · 07/06/2018 16:47

May I copy this please, as a stock response to certain posters?

Mais bien sur!

UnbornMortificado · 07/06/2018 16:45

I had no idea about speech therapists.

My 5yo DD was very delayed, massive stammer interfering with day to day stuff and making her miserable.

Long, long wait for a referral.

If referrals are taking longer due to extra demand then yes it is affecting children.

I don't often post on the feminism board because I'm still learning but I have followed a lot of threads which have really opened my eyes. So thank you for that.

Wakame · 07/06/2018 16:44

"Having met several detransitiones Wakaman, I find your glibness utterly repulsive."

Given that that the science exists to show you how rare trans regret is, I find your confirmation bias quite repulsive too.

TheGoalIsToStayOutOfTheHole · 07/06/2018 16:31

No, kids who transition who are not happy adults and sue based on being able to make such a ridiculously huge decision at such a young age. I mean, how many teenagers ever imagine wanting kids?

Also I don't blame actual transpeople for this. that much should be obvious.

Wakame · 07/06/2018 16:30

"I don't think the NHS will cope with the upcoming lawsuits from kids of today who were damaged by blockers and hormones, which will all come at round about the same time."

You mean kids like these who transitioned with puberty blockers and are now happy young adults:

pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/early/2014/09/02/peds.2013-2958

"RESULTS: After gender reassignment, in young adulthood, the GD was alleviated and psychological functioning had steadily improved. Well-being was similar to or better than same-age young adults from the general population. Improvements in psychological functioning were positively correlated with postsurgical subjective well-being."
