Hoorah!

OP posts:

Recent Magdalen fan, her videos are great, plain English, deconstructs trans ideaology in humorous, easy to understand formats and language.

SuitedandBooted · 05/06/2018 10:09

So much of the Trans narrative, particularly for younger people, seems to have a "fashion" feel about it, for want of a better description.

I was very struck by a poster on another thread, relating the evening they spent recently in a gay club, with a young/studenty clientele. The toilets were marked as Male and Gender Neutral (presumably that was formerly the Ladies...). There was a queue for the GN one, but the Men's was barely being used, so our intrepid female poster went in there! She and the barman were just Confused about it.

Sorry that's a bit simplistic - I don't have time for a long post this Am - but great to see Magdalen back! xxx

Thegallofher · 05/06/2018 09:24

Just read up on the Judas Goat. Very appropriate.

Pratchet · 05/06/2018 09:10

I love this, well done Magdalen.

Thegallofher · 05/06/2018 08:49

I love Magdalen’s caustic tone normally and she chucks all that ‘let’s be nice’ female socialisation out the window. I’ve laughed along too (her Stef Sanjati reaction videos are highly amusing) I guess I’m having a wobble because although I know Ash spouts a lot of nonsense and sets herself up as some sort of wise navigator of this multi-gendered, multi-label trans-landscape - I feel for her. But that’s the reality of this world and I’m glad there’s people like Magdalen saying the unsayable and pointing out that the emperor has no clothes.

The basis of what Magdalen was pointing out was fantastic and people like Ash should really have a listen to the key message she was getting across - the whole ‘what did you do to counter the sexism’, how did you help other women by doing what you did. The whole idea that many women/young girls seem to be bailing out of womanhood because it’s too hard. That well known saying ‘the personal is political’ seems to have transmogrified into this ‘me, me, me’ culture. There seems to be no looking at the bigger picture. Thinking out loud here. Absolutely love Magdalen Berns honestly. It’s just that she is Frankie Boyle to Ash’s Michael McInytre (not a brilliant metaphor I know but hopefully you get my drift?!) Off to google Judas Goat now... constantly learning and all that.

AngryAttackKittens · 05/06/2018 07:33

I can see why people would feel sorry for the young woman in the video, but the reality is that she is indeed leading her followers down a path that will hurt them.

Critiquing Magdalen's delivery is a bit of a red herring. There's no way she could say what she's saying that young people already steeped in the gender cult would like.

JoanSummers · 05/06/2018 07:15

Never heard of a judas goat before, very apt.

Beerincomechampagnetastes · 05/06/2018 06:32

Always excellent Magdelen. Thank you for being a voice of clarity for our young people who are far to influenced by these bullshit you tube ‘stars’.
My dd is turning her friends onto magdelen one by one Star

TransplantsArePlants · 05/06/2018 05:54

Thegall

I understand what you are saying. The reaction of this middle-aged woman (me) t the dramatic persona of Ash is to hurrumph. Didn't know she had an eating disorder but it makes perfect sense.

Is Magdelen's delivery so off-putting though? I don't think so.

I wish the teens and tweens would read some feminism

NotMeOhNo · 05/06/2018 03:08

But it's so important for impressionable people to see a critical analysis like this. I think she's brilliant.

thebewilderness · 05/06/2018 02:23

It is hard to have patience and empathy for a Judas Goat while they are leading others to destruction.

Thegallofher · 05/06/2018 01:06

Oh I have watched a lot of Ash’s stuff (along with Alex Bertie, Jake ft Magic etc. in an effort to understand the appeal of the trans narrative to this age-group) and I was wincing at the harshness of Magdalen’s comments. Not because I don’t agree with the points she was making but because I can imagine the reaction of Ash’s audience (and Ash herself who seems quite vulnerable) Magdalen’s tone is apt when reacting to some violent, misogynistic TRA but Ash is not far from being one of those young women we feel so protective of. Yes, she’s got a huge following of mainly impressionable young teens and some Tweenies but I don’t think it’s particularly helpful to treat her like she’s some scheming TRA. She claims to be non-binary and is going for top surgery and has this You Tube friendly persona ( and is very skilful and quite funny in her videos and presentations). I can just imagine the reaction of the Trans community if they watched Magdalen’s video. I don’t know why I feel so protective of Ash but I feel she is more of a victim and Magdalen sticking the proverbial boot in makes me feel uncomfortable. I absolutely do get what Magdalen is saying - but I feel we’re cutting ourselves off from communicating an alternative message to this demographic by sticking the boot in in this way IYSWIM???

thebewilderness · 05/06/2018 00:38

Forcing a company or organization to give you special accommodation is what passes for activism and social justice these days among the asshattery.

hipsterfun · 05/06/2018 00:28

“This is an activist? Fuck off.”

Grin
pachyderm · 05/06/2018 00:18

Torn between horror at Ash's ludicrous narcissistic nonsense, and pity for her. She's young enough to be my daughter. What on earth is wrong with these young women? A relative of mine had a mastectomy (stop calling it top surgery) because she had cancer; it is painful, unpleasant and messy- there were problems with lymphatic drainage and scarring. Why on earth would a young woman do that for no reason? It's absolutely heartbreaking.

ChipsForSupper · 04/06/2018 23:59

Pricelessly brilliant.

Should1stayorshould1go · 04/06/2018 23:31

yup, Ashs apologetic, overthinking female socialisation shines through

R0wantrees · 04/06/2018 23:26

I think this video is one that really needs to be shared widely since its more about sexism.
The UK case that Magdalen mentions had wide coverage. As well as the breakfast tv interview, it was discussed on Woman's Hour. The WH discussion led to India Willoughby's comment about women's hairy legs being 'dirty' and Jenni Murray's subsequent article which resulted in her public rebuke by the BBC.

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/be-trans-be-proud-but-dont-call-yourself-a-real-woman-frtld7q5c

Are there ways to share it by way of follow up with those journalists who covered the UK case last year or elsewhere on Mumsnet?

gendercritter · 04/06/2018 22:08

Gosh Ash is annoying.

I browsed through some of their other videos. This one is one where they come out as non-binary to their mum. It's had 5 million, 400 thousand views. Rapid onset gender disorder is suddenly much easier to understand when you learn that. Ash also talks about having an eating disorder and getting top surgery. As annoying as Ash is, that breaks my heart. No one with an eating disorder should be able to find a surgeon who will remove their breasts.

pombear · 04/06/2018 22:04

Magdalen's straight (!)-talking youtube films were what helped me really understand the issue last year (and develop a small crush on Magdalen!) .

She is awesome, and I am eternally both grateful for her speaking out at her own risk to bring some of us to the awareness that we didn't have before, and also ashamed that I do not publically speak out with her right now as shamefully I need to keep my job in an environment that, if I did speak out, may result in me targeted by trans-right activists. The place where I work does not need this type of focus from abusive men. And I also need to keep working as a single mum.

But I feel ashamed that this is stopping me from speaking out with Magdalen.

I do what I can in real life, and all of us can in different ways. Magdalen - if you're reading this, someone asked me who my heroes are recently. I don't have many, but you are one of them.

This is a massive issue of our day for women and girls, and all children whatever sex.

You are amazing.

Sarahconnor1 · 04/06/2018 21:51

The eye rollSmile brilliant.

What a self-centred, self congratulating little shit bag.
Nice to see Magdalen back though.

DisturblinglyOrangeScrambleEgg · 04/06/2018 21:01

However, employees in the US have fewer employment law protections than here in the UK

This is true, and a good point. I do some freelance work for an american company, and they were agog at the idea of 1 month's notice for employees - let alone DP who had 6 months in one job and 1year in the next..

However, I think that if you're going to describe yourself as an activist, you probably need to be a little bit more than a bedroom keyboard warrior.

thebewilderness · 04/06/2018 20:57

I am guessing this is the video she was referring to when she said she had completed one before the assault.
I hope she is recovering well.

Picassospaintbrush · 04/06/2018 20:56

Silly woman. I refused to wear a skirt in the Royal Navy in 1981.
