2 refused now. I'm not optimistic.

Ereshkigal · 04/06/2018 22:50

Yes this is exactly the kind of thing to write. And true!

MipMipMip · 04/06/2018 22:48

Sounds good Pencils. I've been going on Twitter and reported until I got too depressed.

Good ideas for playing the algorithms.

The first of my reports has come back as not upheld. Sad

PencilsInSpace · 04/06/2018 22:44

That's really useful MipMip, thank you. So far I have only reported people for targeting someone else or a group of people and I've never had a box I could write actual words. I shall start taking TERF more personally in future.

My edit:

TERF is a slur directed exclusively at women. Sex is a protected characteristic under the UK Equality Act 2010. TERF is used to incite violence and hatred towards women who seek to uphold their sex based rights under the law.

I have been called a TERF and I feel threatened by this tweet.

Any algorithm-based moderation is wide open to gaming.

There are positive things we can do too. If the algorithm is based on positive reactions to tweets then let's all make an extra effort to like, share and give positive responses to gender critical tweets, especially those from people who may be shadow banned and also those we don't (yet) follow.

MipMipMip · 04/06/2018 22:11

I gave written this and will use it for any kill/punch/hurt TERF tweets. Feel free to adopt or edit!

TERF is a term used exclusively for women who know trans people are still the sex they are born and not the gender they identify with. They know that trans women continue to offend at a male rate and that as a group men are a danger to women. They believe sex segregation needs to continue to protect women.

I am a TERF and I feel threatened by this tweet.

So it’s likely to be illegal under GDPR

mipmip or a PERF (penis excluding)

drspouse · 04/06/2018 21:29

mipmip maybe you are a MERF?

Ereshkigal · 04/06/2018 21:20

I bet the algorithm puts more weight on a personal complaint.

MipMipMip · 04/06/2018 21:17

Ok, I am officially a terf. I believe male bodied people, no matter their gender orientation, should not be in female spaces. Technically I suppose that makes me a mterf as I don't object to female trans but that complicates the issue.

I will now take every post recommending violence against TERFs to be targeting me.

Ereshkigal · 04/06/2018 21:07

Just wondering, if we self identify as TERFs then when we report a punch a terf comment for violence we can honestly say the violence is being threatened against ourselves

I have always done this. Then you get a little box to write about what's happened to you and you can say, "sort out your misogyny problem, stop letting abusive males bully and silence and threaten women". You don't have to identify as a slur to know it's aimed at you.

Bowlofbabelfish · 04/06/2018 20:08

"All of this shadow banning will be handled by an algorithm,

So it’s likely to be illegal under GDPR.

R0wantrees · 04/06/2018 19:24

This shadow banning is scary.

Isn't it?

As far as I can understand, you are not notified if your Twitter account is shadow banned.

People who follow you will still see your tweets, so they won't notice.

If someone who is not following a shadowbanned account & are searching for something, they won't know what they're not seeing.

MipMipMip · 04/06/2018 19:19

Just wondering, if we self identify as TERFs then when we report a punch a terf comment for violence we can honestly say the violence is being threatened against ourselves. So you think that will get TRAs responded to more harshly?

This shadow banning is scary.

WTFareLeadersThinking
I am not on Twitter, when I search @ManFRIDAY_ I can see a tweet from six hours ago. Have I got the correct Twitter account?

Its the right account, I can see though that a number of tweets have been posted this afternoon. I follow Man Friday.

from the article
"Twitter is announcing on Tuesday that it will begin hiding tweets from certain accounts in conversations and search results. To see them, you’ll have to scroll to the bottom of the conversation and click “Show more replies,” or go into your search settings and choose “See everything.”…

When Twitter’s software decides that a certain user is “detract[ing] from the conversation,” all of that user’s tweets will be hidden from search results and public conversations until their reputation improves. And they won’t know that they’re being muted in this way; Twitter says it’s still working on ways to notify people and help them get back into its good graces. In the meantime, their tweets will still be visible to their followers as usual and will still be able to be retweeted by others. They just won’t show up in conversational threads or search results by default…"

help.twitter.com/en/rules-and-policies/hateful-conduct-policy

"Hateful conduct: You may not promote violence against or directly attack or threaten other people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or serious disease. We also do not allow accounts whose primary purpose is inciting harm towards others on the basis of these categories."

Maybe as it is an algorithm, 'terf' does not fit with these catagories?

Interesting to note that sex is not included.

MsMcWoodle · 04/06/2018 18:21

Meanwhile, all the reports I've made of people saying 'punch a terf' have come back as 'does not violate Twitter rules'.

R0wantrees · 04/06/2018 18:15

sorry the top line:
"All of this shadow banning will be handled by an algorithm, meaning who gets banned will depend mostly on the reactions of other people"

is a quote from the article above.

R0wantrees · 04/06/2018 18:15

How do they decide on whose voice is not worthy in a debate?

"All of this shadow banning will be handled by an algorithm, meaning who gets banned will depend mostly on the reactions of other people.

It sounds like it will predominately be driven by the number of reports (providing these fit within pre-determined terms)

If a lot of people could report and use grounds that are recognised, an account may be shadow-banned, suspended or (if there have been 3? bans) the person permanently banned.

WTFareLeadersThinking · 04/06/2018 17:56

So is their account looking active to them and to everyone else who follows them, when people like myself who isn't following can't see the account or we can't see any tweets they make?

Floeer · 04/06/2018 17:55

oh btw, on subject of Twitter (if it is okay) I have noticed a lot of people retweeting tweets that are "no longer available" and cant actually even see who tweeted it to begin with - does this mean they have been shodowbanned or just that they deleted that tweet?

Pratchet · 04/06/2018 17:52

Would they be able to search and find the women involved in ManFriday if they were shadow banned
Not necessarily. I have searched for myself by @name before and drawn a blank (despite tweeting like a train a few minutes before)

Floeer · 04/06/2018 17:48

R0wantrees massively worrying really as it is just mass silencing and hiding debate. How do they know who to shadowban too? How do they decide on whose voice is not worthy in a debate?
