A letter to a female transactivist

Just saw this on Twitter. Brilliant

"A man is not a woman. There’s no medical procedure that can change sex in humans or any other mammal. When you fight for the right of men to call themselves “women” and enter woman-only spaces on the basis of their say so, you are doing what Men’s Rights Activists have always done. You are violating women’s boundaries for personal gain. You are allowing men to colonise women’s spaces. You are creating a climate of fear where women and girls will start to withdraw from public life, because all semblance of safety – access to sex seggregated spaces when they are vulnerable – will be destroyed. Your activism is not feminism, it’s at best a misguided naiveté, and at worst opportunism to get ahead while throwing other women under the bus. And by the time you realise how foolish you’ve been, because you are “just” a woman in those men’s eyes, it’ll be too late. The way entitled men disrespect women, the way they mow women down, the way they put their own needs, feelings and wants before women’s lives and livelihoods, they’ll do the same to you when you’re no longer useful to them."

I'm guessing "creepy pervert" is officially out.

PencilsInSpace · 28/05/2018 09:32

Was it ever decided what the nice, non-transphobic term is for those bin rummagers if we can't say AGP?

AngryAttackKittens · 28/05/2018 09:25

Only 90%? I think we should do better. Let's have a competition to see who can get to 95% first!

You rang? I have no fucks left to give and will happily point out to handmaidens that throwing other women under the bus won't win them any respect from men - they'll get thrown right under themselves as soon as they're no longer useful.

TERFragetteCity · 28/05/2018 09:15

I don't mind sharing my bathroom with a trans woman.

That's nice dear.

You don't need to look to dystopian fiction for comparisons. In ISIS-ruled Syria and Iraq, they had female morality police whose job was to police the other women, reporting them for not covering their faces or other infractions. They sometimes dispensed summary justice themselves. Many of the morality police were European born and raised.

It struck me that ISIS and The Handmaid's Tale had a lot in common too.

dontstoprepealin · 28/05/2018 08:58

Yes, I noticed a very well known Irish repealer being called out by that crowd for not doing enough to centre trans people, despite her endless fawning over them in general. Nothing is ever enough. Remember it happened to Jack Monroe?

The Trans voices 4 repeal people also attacked anyone who associated with "that Terf Glinner". That would be Graham Linehan, who shared his and his wife's story of her termination due to fatal foetal anomaly. Graham Linehan who gave his time and used his profile to raise awareness of this vital aspect of the abortion debate. They really are arseholes.

Sadly there will always be women who are prepared to throw other women under the bus for their own benefit.

In the case of women like Ash whatsername and Laurie Penny, they do it for male approval and virtue cookies as misogynists like Owen Jones and Paris Lees and Shon Faye tell them what good girls they are.

What they don’t realise is that they will say or do the wrong thing eventually and be branded as terfs along with the rest of us.

I also think once the zeitgeist has moved on and we look back at this time in history as a time when misogyny was allowed to go unchecked under the pretence of advancement of civil rights and women were silenced, these silly fools will try to distance themselves from their previous behaviour.

Sadly for them it’s all there in black and white, how they centred males in feminism and fought to undo women’s hard won rights, services and spaces.

LangCleg · 28/05/2018 08:34

Online feminists have been using that term for collaborators for decades now. Recently though, I had been using the term 'sex traitor', because mainly I am 90% evil and stuff.

flashnazia · 28/05/2018 07:54

Anushka, nobody is saying that trans ppl are bad or awful. That's an assumption you made.

Cunstancemarkiewicz · 28/05/2018 07:15

wishiwassizeeight · 28/05/2018 06:52

Sex traitor is a good description. I see female TRAs and handmaidens as utter traitors to their sex, personally.

LaSqrrl · 28/05/2018 00:28

Shouldn't it be "Aunts" or "Commanders Wives" rather than Handmaids?

Yes, within the context of the book. But also, it is 'handmaiden' (not 'handmaid', even though sometimes used interchangeably), and more along the lines of the older meaning:
something, such as an idea, that helps and supports something else

Online feminists have been using that term for collaborators for decades now. Recently though, I had been using the term 'sex traitor', because mainly I am 90% evil and stuff.

TerfsUp · 27/05/2018 23:31

Accidentally stumbled upon the disgusting and prejudiced side of mumsnet.

I suggest you stumble out to avoid being associated with the likes of us.

wishiwassizeeight · 27/05/2018 23:16

Watching The Handmaids Tale tonight I was struck by how much the Aunts put me in mind of the transmaidens.

DickTERFin · 27/05/2018 23:11

Shouldn't it be "Aunts" or "Commanders Wives" rather than Handmaids?

In the book at least, it was they who wantonly participated in the oppression of other women.

wishiwassizeeight · 27/05/2018 22:59

We are not narrow minded.

We are just awake.

SeahorsesAREhorses · 27/05/2018 22:45

How do people change sex Anush?

Anushkashsmum · 27/05/2018 22:16

As for keeping away from your children... Are you scared being trans is contagious lol... What if your child wants to change sex.. Would you disown them?

Anushkashsmum · 27/05/2018 22:12

Shameful lol.. I'm proud to be caring, loving and not narrow minded.. My ex partner was trans and a lovely woman.. Also, lots of my friends are transdendered and are lovely people.... Get a life for goodness sake!

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 27/05/2018 22:00

Anushka and Username....shame on YOU!! Stay away from my children - they are not allowed near the likes of you.

username122 · 27/05/2018 21:23

Wow. Accidentally stumbled upon the disgusting and prejudiced side of mumsnet. Now I understand why it gets such bad press

wishiwassizeeight · 27/05/2018 21:19

Really nothing to be proud of Anushka - just a word for women who throw other women under the bus to gain male approval.

Pretty shameful really.

Anushkashsmum · 27/05/2018 19:52

I've got a new label... I'm a Handmaiden!

SeahorsesAREhorses · 27/05/2018 16:33

..and also it isn't women and girls job to make sad men and boys happy, even if their intentions are completely honourable.

MaybeBabey · 27/05/2018 16:10

A man is not a woman. There’s no medical procedure that can change sex in humans or any other mammal. When you fight for the right of men to call themselves “women” and enter woman-only spaces on the basis of their say so, you are doing what Men’s Rights Activists have always done.

Hm. I personally feel like it's more complicated.

I don't mind sharing my bathroom with a trans woman.

There are people that seem to truly feel that they were / are supposed to be the other sex, go through considerable difficulties to get as close as possible etc.

I have a lot of sympathy for them, btw.

The issue is opening women's spaces up to anyone that claims to be female/a woman.

Whether that is a 200 pound wrestler, a convicted sex offender or the trans woman living next door.
