What a day for Irish women

All indications for an overwhelming, resounding YES. The images of people leaving their 'I've Voted' stickers on the wall beside Savita's mural, the footage of people coming #hometovote, the vox pops on the radio of older people telling their stories of why they voted Yes. This isn't just about abortion rights. This is about the Magdalen women, the Tuam babies, the forced adoptions, the cervical cancer scandal... It's about women deserving better. An apology. A vindication. A promise for the future.

I am overwhelmed and so, so proud.

Oh look, a man telling a group of women how to manage their bodies and their sexuality. That’s new and unusu...

Oh, wait. Hmm

SidSparrow
How about wear a condom? There are instances where abortion is necessary, i.e. health of the mother, rape, but most of them are because of irresponsibility. I'm a bit sick of all the rejoicing. What about people who can't have kids? I don't agree with abortion as a late method of contraception. Plenty of women have regretted having an abortion, very few regret having children.

Contraception fails, women have every right to fix that
People are rejoicing over bodily autonomy, not being reduced to a mere vessel

Like it or not, the fertile owe nothing to the infertile, we are not their incubators for hire
Actually studies show most women feel relief after abortion.
Many women also regret having kids but are too scared to talk openly about it as they fear judgement, its not the done thing to say you shouldnt have had kids

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/05/2018 22:36

I'm hoping they wrote an exclusion around clinics in the law from the beginning! It would be easy to do!

CopONNotLinkedIn · 30/05/2018 21:21

my colleague was telling me earlier that a group of priests are planning to protest outside abortion clinics. I really hope that protesting outside an abortion clinic is made a criminal offence.

SardineReturns · 30/05/2018 16:40

And in Irelands case the Voice Of The Man is a Fucking Hypocrticial one as they didn't stop women who could afford it, coming to the mainland UK for abortion.

Pathetic, truly pathetic.

SardineReturns · 30/05/2018 16:38

some facts and figures

Around 25 million unsafe abortions were estimated to have taken place worldwide each year, almost all in developing countries (1).
Among these, 8 million were carried out in the least- safe or dangerous conditions.
Over half of all estimated unsafe abortions globally were in Asia.
3 out of 4 abortions that occurred in Africa and Latin America were unsafe.
The risk of dying from an unsafe abortion was the highest in Africa.
Each year between 4.7% – 13.2% of maternal deaths can be attributed to unsafe abortion.

But who cares about any of that eh? If they didn't want to die they should've kept their legs shut.

Awesome Voice Of The Man on this thread demonstrating exactly how callous the decision makers on this and other topics primarily affecting women are. We must do as we are told even if it kills us, and as subhuman vessels, what loss is it really anyway?

Some people are just nasty cunts, I suppose.

Very happy for the women and girls of Ireland, hope that the next steps to actually make abortion available come soon.

SardineReturns · 30/05/2018 16:35

" It's your body so you should be protecting it. "

We have to protect our bodies from men?

Interesting. Not a perspecitve that anti abortion / women are feckless bastards / etc types usually take.

I really dislike the sort of men (assume sid is a man) who come on women's websites to tell women in the feminist section that they are VERY MUCH IN FAVOUR of forcing women and girls into carrying prenancies and giving birth when they absolutely don't want to, and fuck the associated risks (mental health & physical).

If men say we should be punished for "not protecting our bodies from men" (???) then punished we must be.

Of course all over the world women who are denied abortion try to get them anyway at a massive cost in terms of injury & death, including existing children being left without a mother but who cares about they eh? Serves her right.

AngryAttackKittens · 29/05/2018 23:26

Don't forget, a woman's place is in the wrong! If you do forget don't worry, someone else will be along to remind you soon.

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/05/2018 23:07

Women have to parent the men they're sleeping with? Nope. Anyone I shag is hopefully an adult and can decide to wear a condom all by themselves.

Unfortunately condoms split, contraception fails, people assault people and you know what, sometimes people are a bit crap at birth control. And they shouldn't be sentenced to an unwanted pregnancy and birth for being a bit shit.

I was a bit crap in my youth. Just lucky.

AngryAttackKittens · 29/05/2018 21:41

And yet here you are, still commenting.

SidSparrow · 29/05/2018 21:39

I wouldn't bother. My first post doesn't need me to explain any further my feelings on the subject and I'm not too interested in anyone elses opinion on it.

AngryAttackKittens · 29/05/2018 21:30

Does any kind soul have the patience to engage with Sid? Because I can't be arsed.

SidSparrow · 29/05/2018 21:28

If you're having sex and you're not ensuring contraception... like asking the man to wear a condom you're probably too immature to be having sex. If a man says he is and he doesn't then that's a whole other and rare story. It's your body so you should be protecting it.

The mysoginistic remark... laughable.

AngryAttackKittens · 29/05/2018 21:18

I'm a bit sick of all the rejoicing.

Shorter misogynistic arsehole - when women are happy that pisses me off.

Ereshkigal · 29/05/2018 19:49

YY.

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/05/2018 18:55

I think people are misunderstanding why people are celebrating. It's not yay abortion. It's yay:

Bodily autonomy
Women's rights
Proper healthcare
Reduction of interference in personal decisions
Separation of church and state
Increase in people's compassion for women and girls
Ironically probably a reduction in abortions
No more deaths from stupid medical decisions
No more criminalization of women's choices

All that and more!

CopONNotLinkedIn · 29/05/2018 18:40

That Bishop Doran is a right arsehole isn't he?

''human rights'' aren't part of catholic doctrine. Wow. The cat is out of the bag. There we have it. Human Rights fly in the face of Catholicism.

Another bishop (D'Arcy) spoke out after his colleague to try and make the Catholic clerics sound less like a bunch of medieval brutes but wow.....

FermatsTheorem · 29/05/2018 17:45

Sardine I think I love you!

SardineReturns · 29/05/2018 17:21

Oh do you mean MEN? MEN should wear a condom?

And yet you go on to say it's women who are itrresponsible? Interesting.

Why don't you pop over to a few men's forums and start telling them all to wear condoms & whatever the male version of "shut your legs" is? Have fun, bye!

SardineReturns · 29/05/2018 17:19

Well I did try to wear a condom once but it wouldn't fit over my head.

HTH.

SidSparrow · 29/05/2018 16:40

FlaviaAlbia · 29/05/2018 08:36

That's brilliant honeyrider, it feels like we're being included and not left behind.

squeekums · 29/05/2018 00:57

12esmaes
"Dads and Granddads - saying they were voting yes for the young women in their lives"
They care nothing for the lives that will be ended though do they. Shocking that people are so callous towards the unborn.

They care for life, their wives, sisters, friends, mothers. You know actual living people. If you dont like abortion, dont have one.
You have no right to deny others access to healthcare.
People like you are why people like savita die, are why 14yr old rape victims commit suicide. You deem a fetus is above them, the actual person, its sick, twisted and utterly inhumane

squeekums · 29/05/2018 00:46

Well done ireland
Finally women will have true bodily autonomy

honeyrider · 29/05/2018 00:15

Minister for Children Katherine Zappone has said women from Northern Ireland who want abortions will be welcome in Ireland.
