Guess how I got suspended from the Labour Party?

IAmDavidLewis · 22/05/2018 23:17

Well, one of the weirdest days in my life concluded with me receiving a letter informing me of my immediate suspension from the Labour Party. They believe I may have breached the rules by subverting the intention of All Women Shortlists, Women’s Officers or minimum quotas for women. Unfortunately, this does mean that my political ambitions are on hold for a while. I shall of course be continuing to self-identify as a woman every Wednesday, as that is my gender identity...

I have to say a huge thanks to @namechangeah for all her help, guidance and, more importantly, proof-reading! I wouldn’t have gotten to this point without it. I’d also like to thank everyone for their support today. I hope this has helped a bit.

And the Telegraph called me an “activist”! Achievement unlocked Grin

I noted Fae's reference to David's 'smug grinning face' RIGHT underneath the mugshot of Fae.

Which could not be smugger or grinnier....

My thoughts exactly Grin

BTW by ‘objectively female’ candidates for woman’s officer that would of course include a female-bodied GNC person or a female- bodied person who identified themselves as trans. I hope that was clear.
By ‘Objectively’ I mean the objectivity of other people’s observation of a person’s sex, not about how that individual gender identifies themselves.

Michael Briggs (Sociology Dept. Oxford) users.ox.ac.uk/~sfos0060/FreeSpeechOxford.pdf

'Free speech at Oxford:
Do women have the right to meet to discuss legislation?'

Background
The meeting was organized by Woman’s Place UK. This organization was formed after a meeting in London in September 2017 was targeted for harassment and a 60-year-old woman (Maria MacLachlin) was physically attacked by two males; one (Tara Wolf, who identifies as a woman) has just been convicted of battery
Meetings organized by Woman’s Place UK are subjected to harassment and intimidation by transgender activists (many of whom are not actually transgender). Their slogan is #nodebate. Transgender activists lie about the organization in order to persuade the venue to cancel the booking; this stratagem was successful in Cardiff in April; the Mercure hotel hastily cancelled the booking on account of ‘bigotry’, but then had to issue an apology to Woman’s Place. If the venue does not cancel, then activists will ‘show their fury with the venue by giving them a 1 star review on Facebook’ (as happened after the meeting in Edinburgh, 14 February 2018). During the meeting, protesters will gather outside the venue and shout to intimidate women entering. After a London meeting, a woman had her glasses snatched (currently under investigation by the police—the culprit is apparently an Oxford graduate). Women who are seen to attend the meetings may be targeted subsequently... "continues

(concludes)
"I have entered this debate not because I am a feminist but because freedom of speech is one of the highest values of a democratic society, and the basic foundation of university life.
Transgender activism poses a grave threat to freedom of speech."

Purple agree crucial to have this debate across ALL media - reaching as wide a demographic as possible. Fantastic to be discussed in the Sun.

ChattyLion · 25/05/2018 11:08

Sorry in haste not RTFT so a couple of things

  • your MP is not allowed to ignore their constituents letters, so eg if you are Maria Miller’s constituent she has to reply to enquiries- make sure you include your home address so your MP knows you are their constituent.
-fermat you asked about Pip Bunce and I agree with your question, I don’t know what the difference would be from PB to David Lewis
  • my question is what is the difference between what David Lewis applied to do (apparently so wrong his party membership has been suspended and there will be an investigation..)
And Lily Madigan’s application to be a women’s officer. AFAIK made under the same rules. Lily wasn’t kicked out of the party, she was voted in, then various strange things were said about members personal data and then women began to be kicked out for complaining or asking questions about wanting an objectively female Women’s officer. All well documented on this board.

What is the objective difference between their applications? Why -if self ID that you are a woman is the only standard-, are some applications unwelcome and others valid? Genuine question.

Excellent that this is starting to get fair coverage in the red tops. This is needed to get the issues out to a demographic that might otherwise simply dismiss them as a spat between two factions - feminists v non gender conforming men - neither of which they much approve of.

ToeToToe · 25/05/2018 10:58

What - books like "I am Jazz" (USA) and that dire penguin nonsense (UK) - promising children a "party with all your friends and a new name Glitterball Star Cake " - read to kids in KS1? No thanks.

It's indoctrination of gender ideology - rigid gender stereotypes - IMO. Which is what we should be fighting against.

flowersonthepiano · 25/05/2018 10:49

This is the item I mentioned on BBC Radio 4 today

It was Ruth Hunt (of Stonewall) commenting

“You only to look at the extent to which LGBT people are experiencing hate crime in our streets to know that the problems haven’t gone away, and there are still significant issues in some schools. There are schools that will not acknowledge specifically LGBT issues.”

Reporter: She also sees disturbing parallels today. How the gay community was marginalized back then, and how the trans community feels it’s under attack now.

“The same fearmongering. The same deliberate misinformation. And I was both not shocked and totally shocked to see a newspaper recently request that books talking about transgender issues should be banned from schools. And I thought, that’s where we are. We’ve come full circle.”

Women" rather than "Feminists" - excellent.

Yes - I think the piece is very much David's own words.

SuitedandBooted · 25/05/2018 10:36

I had forgotten about the eggshell comments etc.

I think I will be following up my complaint about Fae on the Jeremy Vine show again, (it was on yesterday).
I complained about her disingenuous statements, talking over Linda Bellos, and Vine's failure to control it, and address the implications of the proposed Self ID changes in any way.

"If you have a complaint about a programme you should contact BBC Complaints".

nauticant · 25/05/2018 10:32

Thanks David for sticking your head above the parapet.

you must intend to live in your preferred gender until you die

Something has been clear to me for a while now. If you accept the ideology of gender identity and the things that flow from it, then it consistently follows that bi-gender (as a proxy for sex) people where they are simultaneously both a man and a woman, and flip-flopping from one gender to the other (as a proxy for sex) without limit must be permitted. If this brave new world is ushered in, no matter what the legal draftspeople try to do, any restrictions on only one gender (as a proxy for sex) or limits on transitions will be unsustainable.

Janie143 · 25/05/2018 10:30

Has anyone linked to the petition in the article's comments?

R0wantrees · 25/05/2018 10:28

I've heard the statement made by MM a number of times elsewhere. I would be interested in seeing it referenced. What does she mean by 'group'?

Ereshkigal · 25/05/2018 10:23

MM comments not your post!

Ereshkigal · 25/05/2018 10:22

It's utter bullshit.

SuitedandBooted · 25/05/2018 10:22

The Sun has a comments section at the end.
I wonder if they police it as, ahem, "fairly" as the Guardian?

And again, yes to pushing for more articles in the Daily Mail, Sun, Express, Mirror etc. They have huge reach, and they are FREE online. Just think how many people read them.

Janie143 · 25/05/2018 10:17

^^I wondered where she gets this bit from: “Nationally, the evidence is clear that trans people still endure hostility, discrimination and higher levels of sexual attack than any other group.” Me too. I think that information relates to cunty women

Ereshkigal · 25/05/2018 10:17

Ereshkigal
I noticed in the Sun article that the concerns were reported as being 'women's' rather than radical feminist's/ some feminist's / feminist's etc.

Yes. Good.

Bowlofbabelfish · 25/05/2018 10:12

I think it's good that article appeared in The Sun

Yup. I keep saying this - the sun, the daily mail etc is where this should be being publicised. I don’t care how sniffy people are about tabloids, they have massive circulation and reach, and sometimes they do get it spot on.
A few articles in the DM from a journo who can give a more nuanced article than the usual freak show stuff they publish would go a long way. The DM has TEN TIMES as many readers as the guardian.

SuitedandBooted · 25/05/2018 10:12

"Women" rather than "Feminists" - excellent.

It shows it is a mainstream issue, rather than something for the weird/out-there/hairy legged man-haters!
Lets be honest, using "feminist" as a defining issue makes a lot of people tune out. It shouldn't, but it does.

R0wantrees · 25/05/2018 09:55

I noticed in the Sun article that the concerns were reported as being 'women's' rather than radical feminist's/ some feminist's / feminist's etc.

(extract)
"Women are worried that letting men say they are women without any checks is dangerous.

There is a fear that some men will identify as women just so they can go into changing rooms or loos and spy on or attack women.

Women also say that it will affect women’s rights to dignity and privacy, for example on women-only hospital wards or in shelters."

bigKiteFlying · 25/05/2018 09:53

I think it's good that article appeared in The Sun - FIL reads that as do many of his old work mates reading it there they'll take it on board while they wouldn't as much from other sources.

See Jane Fae gave the usual oh it would never happen defence Hmm.

flowersonthepiano · 25/05/2018 09:52

She slammed current laws requiring a diagnosis with a mental health condition as “similar to the way gay people were treated in the UK more than 30 years ago”.

There was someone on BBC R4 Today programme this morning making this same point very strongly (between 8.45 and 9 am). The item was about the anniversary of section 28 and someone didn't register who) said that it was happening all over again for trans people.

It really does feel like fighting a losing battle when you hear that sort of thing. I certainly would have been sympathetic to it before learning the ramifications from you lot.

Melamin · 25/05/2018 09:48

I hope you get an answer. It will be interesting. You hear these claims of clear evidence but you never see it.
