Guess how I got suspended from the Labour Party?

Well, one of the weirdest days in my life concluded with me receiving a letter informing me of my immediate suspension from the Labour Party. They believe I may have breached the rules by subverting the intention of All Women Shortlists, Women’s Officers or minimum quotas for women. Unfortunately, this does mean that my political ambitions are on hold for a while. I shall of course be continuing to self-identify as a woman every Wednesday, as that is my gender identity...

I have to say a huge thanks to @namechangeah for all her help, guidance and, more importantly, proof-reading! I wouldn’t have gotten to this point without it. I’d also like to thank everyone for their support today. I hope this has helped a bit.

And the Telegraph called me an “activist”! Achievement unlocked Grin

If all women have different experiences and being a woman has no connection to genitals then the word ‘woman’ is synonymous with ‘human’.

TerfsUp · 23/05/2018 14:11

It’s bemiseing to listen to people insist being a woman isn’t about biology.

All you need is a pink hoodie and you're gold.

merrymouse · 23/05/2018 14:09

I think the point is that people are more than their genitals, and their behaviour and appearance shouldn’t be restricted by their genitals... but the difference between men and women is pretty much their genitals and other reproductive organs.

Melamin · 23/05/2018 14:07

Women are not 'just' genitals, but it is those genitals and reproductive organs that defines them as a woman.

Beyond that, they are much more, just the same as men are. (and they have men's genitals)

Truscum · 23/05/2018 14:04

It’s bemiseing to listen to people insist being a woman isn’t about biology.

I felt very sorry for the mother just on radio 2...but surely even though women aren’t ‘just’ genitals, it is those genitals and reproductive organs that have caused women to be oppressed throughout history?

How else do they explain that? Why else were women the exploitable sex?

Did they wear pink mammoth fur?

Did Ceasar really hate them always going shopping?

Did the witches plaster their faces in herby make up?

How did those men, throughout history, always manage to single out women for oppression. How did they tell the difference between you and men if genitals and reproductive function have nothing to do with it?

Caller with trans son saying that there's more to being a woman than genitalia, no one chooses it, it's not trendy, the suicide rate is dropping at the same rate as people are allowed to transition (!)

I get that she's been to hell and back, but who has been feeding her this nonsense. It's appalling that she has had this misinformation around a profound and shocking life experience.

R0wantrees · 23/05/2018 13:58

Caller says 'women are people with wombs'
Next caller describing their child and their pain, 'their daughter is now their son'. She is a feminist and 'embaressed by comments.
Talks of how upsetting and raises suicide.
'Its not a choice'

*NB I'm not a very quick typist so do hope people will listen to the interviews for themselves,. Apologies for any inaccuracies.

JV is now raising the incident at Speaker's corner.

Taking call from trans man. He is discussing the medical steps he has taken.
JV asking if more M to F.
The caller is saying that he is unhappy with Linda saying that transitioning is 'trendy'.
Caller discussing family responses .

TwittleBee · 23/05/2018 13:55

Mumsnet getting a mention will at least hopefully divert a few new people onto this board and hopefully will be able to see what the issue with Self-ID is a lot clearer.

changeypants · 23/05/2018 13:55

poor women, black women etc etc. much left to appropriate?

AbsintheFriends · 23/05/2018 13:55

Agreed it was muddled. Should have stuck to the exact issue of AWS without trying to eat the whole elephant.

HaroldsSocalledBluetits · 23/05/2018 13:55

Strong end message though - that women have experienced lifelong discrimination as a result of their sex and trans women have a different experience.

IAmDavidLewis · 23/05/2018 13:54

@speakingwoman Thank you. @SwearyG asked if I was going to phone in to Jeremy Vine. I wasn’t planning to, as there are people who are far better at talking about this issue than I am. The debate is not mine to have, but if my actions have prompted it, then I hope the opportunity is used well.

And I agree. Biological reality and lived experience would seem to be good qualifications for women’s-only positions.

Bellos tried to cram too much into a short phone call and ended up sounding muddled.

speakingwoman · 23/05/2018 13:51

can anyone explain how Linda differs from Greer?

LighthouseSouth · 23/05/2018 13:50

Melamin "It is someone who has become a woman on a legal technicality by the process of transition"

well arguably it is at the moment but that's exactly what self ID is trying to change.

Flomper · 23/05/2018 13:49

God Jane is tedious.

Jezza is on board

R0wantrees · 23/05/2018 13:49

JV references Germaine Greer.
Linda Bellos draws distinction with born female.

EmpressOfSpartacus · 23/05/2018 13:48

Saying all women have different lived experiences.

Which we do. Only we live our experiences in bodies with XX chromosomes & vulvas.

LaSqrrl · 23/05/2018 13:48

Saying all women have different lived experiences.

LOL, except for when the class analysis applied to trans kicks in, and then it is all trans, regardless of circumstance, the most oppressed in the universe. Even Caitlin Jenner. So very oppressed.

Melamin · 23/05/2018 13:47

trans woman is not a woman with a prefix

It is someone who has become a woman on a legal technicality by the process of transition.

R0wantrees · 23/05/2018 13:46

Linda Bellos is saying that her experience as a child eg playing football would be regarded as 'trans'
Jane Fae rejects this and asks for evidence.
Linda Bellos talks about the recent surge and asks why this is happening.
Jane Fae references 'bizarre theories on Mumsnet' eg big pharma.

Destinysdaughter · 23/05/2018 13:46

Ooh Mumsnet gets a mention!
