Show Dog and it's disturbing message.

I was shown this by a friend on Twitter and another on Facebook and wondered what everyone thought:

foreverymom.com/arts-entertainment/dog-show-movie-review-grooming/

In short, the film is using the 'put up with what you don't like because you need it to accomplish something' as a point of the film.

If you read the article it explains it better as have a squirming toddler.

But do you think this is hysteria? An actual problem in children's entertainment?

I read the article a couple of days ago and was shocked. Would parent pressure on cinema chains work over here? Mass tweeting to complain could be worthwhile.

SameTerfDifferentUserName · 26/05/2018 10:22

WTAF? Thanks for posting. Very concerning completely opposite message to NSPCC’s PANTS campaign!

Italiangreyhound · 23/05/2018 10:07

Thank you @NotAnotherNoughtiesTune my 7 year old son was very keen to see this not now it is a no from me.

This shit suggests people who make kids' films are utterly unaware of reality or have some evil intention. How very horrible.

HotRocker · 23/05/2018 10:01

What are genitals doing in a kids film? I’m trying to think of any other kids film I’ve seen with even any mention of genitalia, let alone a main plot. I’m still utterly baffled but I’ve shared it on FB so other parents can read it.

Typeractive · 23/05/2018 09:47

I do not like the you must trust everyone or you are a bad person message either.

This is a really important point. I think that the rhetoric of diversity and anti-discrimination is sometimes being used to bully women and children into going along with things they are uncomfortable with. Our instincts are there to protect us: we should heed them.

Typeractive · 23/05/2018 09:40

Creepy and sinister. Thanks for flagging this, OP. I shall make sure DD does not see it.

AngryAttackKittens · 23/05/2018 00:15

I'm no conspiracy theorist but there does seem to be a bit too much of it going on to just be a misread message.

Precisely. It's all a bit "if a stranger offers to give you ice cream and show you some puppies and the adults in your life warn you not to go with them then you need to be rescued from those adults by the nice man with the puppies and the van with the darkened windows".

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 23/05/2018 00:11

I occasionally show one of my dogs. The judge does check for two descended testicles, but it's a rapid grab, no fondling. Judges check teeth as well. Some dogs/breeds won't put up with being handled by the judge, so there are workarounds.

I find humanised animals in films and books pretty creepy at the best of times - and this sort of stuff is why.

SpareRibFem · 23/05/2018 00:03

I'm in shock how anyone could have thought that was a suitable message for children.

Noqonterfi · 22/05/2018 23:37

Crikey. Very sinister. Thanks for posting.

thebewilderness · 22/05/2018 22:25

The reviewer makes it sound like the judge gave poor Max a hand job.

LassWiADelicateAir · 22/05/2018 22:21

Oh goodness I glossed over "fondling". Did the reviewer really think it was fondling? That makes it worse.

NotAnotherNoughtiesTune · 22/05/2018 22:16

@LassWiADelicateAir Disturbing and hard to understand at the same time. I don't get how that is the message.

Max carries on even though he's frightened of cars when they take him on the road? Sure.

Also the word fondled makes me feel a bit ick here. Surely inspected not fondled?

It has been getting terrible reviews although not for the reasons here. The final sentence of the review below is jaw dropping.

nationalpost.com/entertainment/movies/show-dogs-only-redeeming-factor-is-natasha-lyonnes-fabulous-bangs-which-has-absolutely-nothing-to-do-with-the-movie

So, when the judge reaches for the boys, Max keeps calm and goes to his happy place, a bizarreDirty Dancing-inspired psychotropic trip where some giant hearts explode and Arnett channels a very poor man’s Patrick Swayze. With a sigh of relief, this fantastic imagining is just long enough for Max to get through the fondling without making a scene, marking an ecstatic moment of transition as cop dog becomes show dog. It is an inspiring sequence that teaches the importance of keeping it together under pressure

LaSqrrl · 22/05/2018 21:32

Wow, this is just so very disturbing.

I noticed a couple of films on Netflix that had the theme that children who had been abducted were really taken away by people who cared for them more than their parents did.

thebewilderness · 22/05/2018 19:33

Grooming children for abuse is a theme running through a lot of animated films. Once you start to notice it you realize it is ubiquitous.

I did not like the bunnies and foxes can be friends theme in Zootopia because rather than the message they claim it sends regarding differences among people the children are likely to view it literally and put the bunny in with the foxes, or stick their hand in a meerkat cage.

FYI. I do not like the you must trust everyone or you are a bad person message either.

WhatTheWaterShowedMe · 22/05/2018 19:23

Has anyone seen Jeepers Creepers or Powder? Both films have incredibly disturbing messages and subtexts and they were both directed by Victor Salva, a convicted child molester.

HotRocker · 22/05/2018 19:21

Wouldn’t it have had to pass a film censorship committee in the UK?

MoltenLasagne · 22/05/2018 19:04

I read this article from Twitter and found it very disturbing. I'm not sure how it got through the many layers of reviews and nobody questioned it. It's either deliberate grooming or the culture in Hollywood is rotten enough that no-one thinks the message of "try to enjoy it when someone touches your genitals when you don't want them to" is disturbing.

Wanderabout · 22/05/2018 18:59
Confused

Who the hell produced this?

LassWiADelicateAir · 22/05/2018 18:51

Dental check/ brushing teeth/removing tartar would have worked perfectly.

Most of us hate it but it is necessary and good for us. There are no sinister implications in having to grin and bear a visit to the dentist.

NotARegularPenguin · 22/05/2018 18:49

Wow. You’d have thought someone on the production side of things would have picked this up before the film was finished!
