Is this really a feminist board?

I am a crap feminist. I haven't read a single book on the subject. Not De Beauvoir, not Greer, not Butler. The reasons for that are to do with a disability that I'd rather not go into, but I am a woman with a brain, and the Republic of Ireland is having a referendum on repealing the 8th this week. There it is, look, thirty threads down. And this "Feminism and Women's Rights" board's primary concern seems to be "What it will really take the peak trans the world?"

So I'm asking you, because I genuinely, honestly, cross my heart and hope to die, believe you are all better read and/or have more experience and/or more knowledge of being a woman than I do.

Doesn't that bother you? Doesn't it bother you that, four days away from the repeal vote, there's one thread on that in the bottom third of a fifty-thread page, and two or three dozen trans-related threads covering everything from Amnesty International to Jordan Peterson to exactly what Munroe Bergdorf told Venice Allan? Does it give you any pause for thought?

Oh FFS sake I really read clip that wrong didn't I? I need new glasses.

"Cis-" is a prefix, used in many fields other than chemistry. It is not offensive. "Trans" means "not cis", just as "cis" means "not trans" — perfectly symmetrical, and not offensive.

No. They are NOT defined as not the other. There is a very specific locational and functional meaning to both cis and trans. When a geneticist talks about a promoter or control element ‘acting in trans’ it does not mean ‘not cis.’ It has a meaning to do with the proximity of the control element to the gene it acts on.

I’m not a stereochemist so I won’t risk getting the definition wrong but if anyone is and would like to step in there please do.

One is not defined as the absence or opposite or mirror of the other. That’s not what it means. To use cis for a woman is like calling a black person non-white. It says ‘white/Male is default and everything else is lumped together in one big, my-god-it’s-not-a-white-male’ Group.

Anyway: how come you get to say some language is offensive and I don’t? If we are all into the extreme validation of anything we want and if anything you don’t like is literal violence, then frankly I’m going to be pedantic and say that I find cis offensive. You find whatever words, deeds, actions, women talking about shit offensive? Well I find cis offensive. Grossly so. So now you can’t say it, saying it might cause me to have an epic meltdown on Twitter, call you a bigot and possibly top myself.

Or would that be a teeny tiny little bit over the top of me? Are you into the extreme Identity politics stuff so that you are more of a victim and thus only you can be offended?

@TERFragetteCity

"...answers both Rosylea & MadBad's questions in one."
"I don't get it"
"What don't you get exactly?"

The question I thought I was asking doesn't seem relatable to the horror story you posted. (If they were Dads, or it was me pushing the trusty old Phil&TED [memories of simpler times] they'd never have been so shitty.)

3,4,6,9 and 12, I reckon, plus the one I want to add 'women have all the rights they need: the right to remain silent'.

TERFragetteCity · 23/05/2018 12:49

They can't stop shaking as soon as they heard that women have babies.

And they say it isn't a mental health condition. How do they even get through the day? How do they talk to their own mother? What if they have a sister? Oh my we should all just flail ourselves against the rocks to avoid upsetting them.

Bowlofbabelfish
I hope they catch whoever did it and your friend makes a full recovery. But I have to ask... Was the perpetrator of this crime a woman, or a man? It’s very hard for a woman to beat a man unconscious.
They won't, because although it happened in full view of lots of people, no-one saw anything! But she has fully recovered, apart from some broken teeth, thank you.
The perpetrators were a mixed group, and they weren't attacking a man they were attacking a 50-something post-op transwoman her "male" muscle mass and testosterone aggression are both long gone.

ErrolTheDragon · 23/05/2018 12:46

I guess for that poor soul, the very existence of sites such as MumsNet or NetMums must constitute 'violence'. ConfusedSad

Ereshkigal · 23/05/2018 12:46

Can I refer to you as 'gender stagnant' if I need to make a distinction? :)

If you want to call me a gender stagnant woman for your own inscrutable reasons be my guest! Woman alone will suffice though to differentiate between me and male people.

TERFragetteCity · 23/05/2018 12:41

I don't get it.

What don't you get exactly?

MadBadDaddy · 23/05/2018 12:31

@ ToeToToe "An excellent example.....answers both Rosylea & MadBad's questions in one."

I don't get it.

TERFragetteCity · 23/05/2018 12:30

Women talking = violence. So just stop doing it ladies.

ToeToToe · 23/05/2018 12:25

An excellent example, TERFragetteCity, and answers both Rosylea & MadBad's questions in one.

TERFragetteCity · 23/05/2018 12:20

Nothing to see here, just some good old fashioned policing of women's thoughts and actions...

Is this really a feminist board?
MadBadDaddy · 23/05/2018 12:18

"Just women and transwomen will do. Or as I would say, women and trans identified males."

Can I refer to you as 'gender stagnant' if I need to make a distinction? :)

MadBadDaddy · 23/05/2018 12:14

@Angryresister Wed 23-May-18 11:59:21"The Trans stuff is the extreme end of misogyny and our very existence and identity as women is threatened"

I don't agree or disagree, but:

I complained of unchallenged 'ignorance' towards Trans-people-as-people and so here is a golden opportunity to prove me wrong.

What is this 'Trans-stuff' you refer to? The Issues? Current affairs? "All of it" (including me)?

Does everyone who reads such a (admittedly succinct) statement just 'knows what you mean' or understand that "Trans Stuff" excludes Trans people, (b/c that would be hateful).

I took it personally, at first glance, that "trans existence=misogyny".

Ereshkigal · 23/05/2018 12:13

No, I meant what I wrote.

Yes, and so did I. DARVO. We see you.

ToeToToe · 23/05/2018 12:13

Me neither, Rosylea.

rosylea · 23/05/2018 12:11

ToeToToe, how does that work then? Don't get it.

Ereshkigal · 23/05/2018 12:11

Just women and transwomen will do. Or as I would say, women and trans identified males.

ToeToToe · 23/05/2018 12:01

Rosy - talk of your hysterectomy would probably have you blasted as transphobic on a lot of feminist boards.

One MNetter was told off in her feminism group (real life, not online) for talking about birth injuries as a women's issue.

MadBadDaddy · 23/05/2018 12:00

The business with 'victim must respect pronouns' in the court sounded impossible to win for either side. I think the judge was trying for a 'least-worst' option but I think it was the wrong choice. I've had to 'make nice' in the face of someone who'd punched me in the face, and I still remember the smirk as we shook hands (old bean). To be told to do that in court, by a judge?

(On paper, TRA and GC protests/counter-protests don't look that different from any other protests or activists groups. Judges aren't famous for being "up-to-the-minute", probably still think 'gangnam style' is a thing)

Angryresister · 23/05/2018 11:59

The problem is that women are being attacked on all fronts...seems that every issue is aimed at reducing us to handmaids . It is frightening and rights to abortion is just one aspect. The problem isn't about how feminist or not we are. I believe that Irish women will be active around their issues and know best the ways to campaign. They have our support. The Trans stuff is the extreme end of misogyny and our very existence and identity as women is threatened and the very few protections we have achieved will be lost, exposing us to even more violence. No one is not taking all issues seriously and we will continue to fight back however we can.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 23/05/2018 11:56

Wow. Barefaced lies about the Maria McLachlan case.

Do continue though. There are lurkers out there

rosylea · 23/05/2018 11:52

Should have said me having a hysterectomy and going on mens rights board to discuss it.

rosylea · 23/05/2018 11:47

Keep going Damnthat because the result is going to be very interesting. At least you can get a few words in when it goes quiet.Grin I do sympathise with everything you've been through (and I'll probably get flamed for showing humanity) but I need to ask you; why are you on this womens board? Wouldn't you be better on boards where people have been through the same? What do you want/expect/need from women on here? It would be like me having a hysterectomy and going on a mens rights board.
