Is this really a feminist board?

I am a crap feminist. I haven't read a single book on the subject. Not De Beauvoir, not Greer, not Butler. The reasons for that are to do with a disability that I'd rather not go into, but I am a woman with a brain, and the Republic of Ireland is having a referendum on repealing the 8th this week. There it is, look, thirty threads down. And this "Feminism and Women's Rights" board's primary concern seems to be "What it will really take the peak trans the world?"

So I'm asking you, because I genuinely, honestly, cross my heart and hope to die, believe you are all better read and/or have more experience and/or more knowledge of being a woman than I do.

Doesn't that bother you? Doesn't it bother you that, four days away from the repeal vote, there's one thread on that in the bottom third of a fifty-thread page, and two or three dozen trans-related threads covering everything from Amnesty International to Jordan Peterson to exactly what Munroe Bergdorf told Venice Allan? Does it give you any pause for thought?

It's a rather sad irony that those who are early in their transition (and therefore least likely to "pass") are also the ones who are most easily hurt by misgendering.

It takes years of practice to become expert at suspending your disbelief for extended periods of time.

Every day's a school day here on "As The TRA Turns".

Datun · 24/05/2018 00:26

The useful thing about people being dicks is that there are so many more women reading these threads now.

Women are learning about DARVO, gaslighting, and projection at a rate of knots just silently watching dicks be dicks.

There's a grim irony watching people fondly imagine they are promoting their cause, instead of what they are really doing, which is exposing it.

AngryAttackKittens · 23/05/2018 23:42

Funny that, isn't it?

ErrolTheDragon · 23/05/2018 23:39

Of course, there are male posters - men and transwomen - who are perfectly welcome and accepted on MN boards, some even on FWR. It's nothing to do with whether they have dicks or not, it's whether they are dicks.

AngryAttackKittens · 23/05/2018 23:17

Lot of men get a kick out of hanging around in women's online spaces. It's only if they say they're trans that the women aren't allowed to tell them to get lost.

ToeToToe · 23/05/2018 23:13

Thanks Juzza, I did not know it was quite that high.

These people get their kicks from interacting with women on a women's feminism board.

They really do. It's yet another form of validation.

Ereshkigal · 23/05/2018 23:12

Only 5% of all transgender people in the UK have sought any medical treatment. That includes therapy, not just hormones and surgery.

This. Important to bear in mind.

Ereshkigal · 23/05/2018 23:11

These people get their kicks from interacting with women on a women's feminism board. Mad dad will double post if they are ignored first post. IMO they are best ignored. You can see they become stronger MRA with each post.

Agree.

Presumably.

LangCleg · 23/05/2018 22:46

So if the midnight misogynist says he's trans all of a sudden, his threads will stay up, will they?

AngryAttackKittens · 23/05/2018 22:43

Nothing surprises me at this point. There'll be a "gosh, why can you all just be nice, we'll be forced to delete the thread if you can't bring yourselves to serve tea and biscuits to the person screaming MRA talking points at you" message by morning.

LangCleg · 23/05/2018 22:39

I can't believe my fucking eyes.

AngryAttackKittens · 23/05/2018 22:39

Women moaning about woman stuff, blah blah, why would anyone care about that?

SardineReturns · 23/05/2018 22:36

Wine = women obvs!

spontaneousgiventime · 23/05/2018 22:36

My comment was deleted when I told a certain poster exactly what I thought of them. MN may police my words here but they can't police my thoughts.

SardineReturns · 23/05/2018 22:35

Post about the suffering globally of wine and girls due to restrictions on reproductive healthcare is dismissed as "blah blah"

I think that says it all, really. Fucking hell. Who the fuck thinks it's ok to do that on a feminist board. On a thread around the vote in Ireland.?

Yes max mra these people don't give a toss about women/ girls it's just right there for all to see.

AngryAttackKittens · 23/05/2018 22:31

Not just that, but comments telling off the MRAs being deleted. I'm sure Kate will be along soon to scold us for being insufficiently welcoming.

LangCleg · 23/05/2018 22:26

This is absolutely fucking outrageous. WTF is going on? At what point did full on MRA posting become ok?

TERFragetteCity · 23/05/2018 22:23

Impressive

Isn't it just.

rosylea · 23/05/2018 22:21

Mad, how far into your relationship before you told her you felt like a woman? (If you don't mind me asking)

Ereshkigal · 23/05/2018 22:17

Weird how they planned it but it was still provocation...such a mindreader! They should be on the stage with powers like that.

Also weird how the provocative "offensive comments" by the victim to the perpetrator were posted after the assault. So Wolf obviously has a time machine to go and get offended then go back and punch Maria. Except Wolf would have had to punch her, so she made offensive comments, go forwards in time to be offended and then go back and punch her again out of "provocation". Impressive Smile

It's a rather sad irony that those who are early in their transition (and therefore least likely to "pass") are also the ones who are most easily hurt by misgendering. Early transition is an incredibly stressful time, and being called "Sir" a few times really adds to the stress levels. So why do people do it? Why would anyone deliberately hurt a total stranger just because they can?

To give you the other side of that, I have ptsd. It's triggered by amongst other things certain elements of anatomy. Adam's apples in particular. I survive day to day life by avoiding looking at the area between the chin and collar of anyone who presents as male. When it is triggered however it's very much a fight or flight reaction. It's not my rational brain in gear, it's self preservation and instinct. Dh has suffered quite a lot especially when he's tried to wake me/comfort me after a nightmare because my gut instinct is to fight and I'm 5'8 and relatively strong.

People who are less likely to pass in spaces I've always considered safe are dangerous to me, not intentionally I'm sure but simply by being there.

So "Why would anyone deliberately hurt a total stranger just because they can?"

Do trans women's rights trump those of women like me who have ptsd relating to anatomy which some trans women share with our rapists? Should they? Is it something we can at least discuss without being shouted down or called transphobic?

The obvious answer is treatment right? But this is the NHS...the psychiatrist who diagnosed me with PTSD told me that "women like me" get better on our own. That I was resilient and that maybe whilst things were so raw, dh should sleep somewhere else to be safe. I wonder how many men he said that to? My guess would be zero.

I don't know what the answer is. I believe people should be allowed to live their lives without impeding on others but I honestly don't know how self id and the needs of some women to have spaces safe from certain elements of anatomy is ever going to match up.
