We are hoping to ascertain interest in gender critical science discussions and activities. Please let us know here or via pm if you are scientifically or medically trained and wish to join our discussions and /or activities.

Do you think realistically they're going to be able to answer that question either way?

PoulaFisch · 18/05/2018 10:04

Ereshkigal

Do you find gender critical scientific exploration a threat?

Far from it. I welcome and encourage objective research.
If the women here can explain why the millions like me feel like we do from a very young age, when no one before them has really managed to do so, then it will be a great day because being trans sucks.

Have a free bunch. Flowers

Terfulike · 18/05/2018 10:03

Our commitment to objectivity will be stated and clearly apparent from content of bibliography

Beau
Well telling a bunch of scientists and medics that we "should be open to all robust evidence whether it supports our preferred narrative or not" is like telling your grandma how to suck eggs.
Why exactly did you assume this wouldn't be our default position?
Why are scientists who are frankly terrified about the eradication of the meaning of the word woman not to be trusted with a literature review?

Terf

Wasn’t accusing of anyone of cherry picking (or of anything for that matter).

I was referring to the terminology to be used and the need to clearly communicate our commitment to objectivity.

Terfulike · 18/05/2018 09:49

Thanks Poulo for your encouragement.
All scientists have have biases. Those who think they don't are dangerous.
I am trained in the scientific method and have peer reviewed research and review publications.
If I read a peer reviewed publication which shows a statistically significant difference between the brains of male and female sexes I want it on the site. Please feel free to submit articles for inclusion to flowersonthe piano who is conducting an (unbiased) literature review

Ah of course terf, that makes sense 👍

Gender critical science vs science
If you can think of a better title for this particular area of specialisation in terms of subject matter please let me have it.

BeyondPink
How about "scientific analysis of gender dysphoria, symptoms and treatment" rather than GCS - if people think that having the word "critical" in the title on mn implies bias?

Why not stay with Terfulike's earlier slip up typo? "Trans Critical Science". Why dress it up? Say what it is. Good luck to you.

Terfulike · 18/05/2018 09:35

Beyond
'Scientific analysis of gender dysphoria symptoms and treatment'
As far as I'm concerned that is not suitable.
I think people are getting mixed up with the 2 meanings of critical.
Here it is meant as in critical analysis
It is not meant as in to criticise an idea

Eliza
Thanks for your offer of help
Interesting comments regarding teens being prescribed blockers
Again, as a medic we need your input to highlight spurious practice as scientists like me aren't so familiar with normal practice. I also believe there's a place for informed opinion on the GCScience site if it's labelled as such

Parietal, I'm revising imaging techniques today, I'll stick you on speed-dial Grin

BeyondPink · 18/05/2018 09:26

How about "scientific analysis of gender dysphoria, symptoms and treatment" rather than GCS - if people think that having the word "critical" in the title on mn implies bias?
As it's already been made quite clear that all evidence will be looked at (aka science)

parietal · 18/05/2018 09:25

I'm a neuroscientist - if you need some input on human brain studies, PM me.

What on earth
Who suggested cherry picking?
You threw that in not me.

I agree Moss.

We should be open to all robust evidence, whether it supports our preferred narrative or not.

Gender critical science vs science
I went to science lessons in year 7, but ever since its been a case of ever increasing specialisation for me
If you can think of a better title for this particular area of specialisation in terms of subject matter please let me have it.
Gender studies certainly wouldn't cut it

My personal interest would be:
Autistic/trans crossover
BDD and eating disorders vs trans
Autistic/ED & BDD crossover

ElizaDontlittle · 18/05/2018 09:09

Also a medic in a hospital specialty. Very happy to be involved in "summarising the evidence" as described below for lay readers - I spend half my working week teaching AHPs so explaining medical concepts to a relatively non medical audience is my bread and butter.

I also wonder (ok so am not a GP and am in a very research driven hospital field) how the GP with the leading clinic for adolescents (assume naming names isn't on) is allowed to set up a clinic with no evidence base for the safety of the drugs, plus no psychological research to suggest long term 'safety' in that respect. I know the GMC investigated but in most fields you can't just prescribe 'in good faith'! I just don't get it at all.

Babel
Re children and or medical issues
I deliberately left this for a medic to describe

Bowl
I'm fully aware of trisomies that's why I said exactly
My thinking was that no one is going to take seriously a study purporting to demonstrate similarities/differences between male/female brains if the study included trisomy individuals (unless they were a proper separate experimental group)
Also I could have gone on all day about sry etc Please do provide a better definition.

Chatty
thanks for your support

Perking faintly

Gender critical
It was a typo

Prescribed gender role
I was referring to behaviours (gender role) and to modified physical features (eg shaving, vaginoplasty)

FeatFeatures of the opposite sex
I considered exactly what you describe as I wrote it. A more detailed version would include reference to the distinctly overlapping normal distributions of certain features (eg height, facial hair; therefore less useful to distinguishing sexes) versus distinctly bimodal ones (eg length of penis/criteria and therefore more useful)

I’m interested but not sure about your starting point of ‘gender critical science’. I think ‘science’ should be enough on its own as we should start from an unbiased position and look at the evidence.
