The right to bare arms.....for women only

As a man reading some of these threads, the fear women have of male violence is greater than I realised.

Is a 2nd amendment, for women, a solution?

Pro gun women in America say the gun is the great equaliser. They say it makes them safer. I think it's a good argument.

Interesting that the Male answer to the epidemic of Male on female violence is to continue making it the woman's responsibility and perpetuate even more violence.
Men need to sort their shit out frankly.

Waddlelikeapenguin · 14/05/2018 18:17

Bare arms Grin

Yeah more guns means more gun deaths so really really bad idea!

Pratchet · 14/05/2018 18:17

Has anyone read the Power. Such a good book.

Pratchet · 14/05/2018 18:16

But if all women carried tasers and defended each other, that could work.

NotARegularPenguin · 14/05/2018 18:13

I bare arms and have great guns btw.

Sun's out guns out is my motto.

User314 · 14/05/2018 18:12

It would be futile. The dangerous men would overpower you and use it on you.

I have thought about a 'ring' that could administer a shot of sedative if a man was trying to rape you or kill you. Just enough to render them paralysed long enough to escape.

No doubt women would be punished more severely for paralysing attackers than men currently are for raping. But it'd be worth it. I'd go to trial/prison for deliberately paralysing some violent creep before I'd get raped or strangled or beaten up or killed.

So if anybody is designing such an item let me know.

arousingcheer · 14/05/2018 18:12

'Bare arms' lol.

Not only do I not want the faff of owning a gun but I resent being told my own response to male violence should be preparing to blow someone's head off. Don't we already know that violence traumatises people?

But it wouldn't kill anyone to just stop attacking women.

'They say it makes them safer.' I grew up in an NRA household so I know the arguments. But are American women safer? Is the US a Shangri-La of sex equality and non-violence?

Also beware asking me to make my own decisions on what constitutes a threat worth shooting someone over. When all you have is a hammer everything looks like a nail.

thetriangleisarealinstrument · 14/05/2018 18:12

yuck id rather be raped and shot than carry a gun about... Im not joking. Im glad I live in the UK.

NotARegularPenguin · 14/05/2018 18:11

I didn't realise the current 2nd amendment was for men only! Hmm

But more guns is always a shit idea.

Kursk · 14/05/2018 18:09

I carry a gun, I also carry a knife and pepper spray, Apart from the gun, they were gifts from DH. He was worried because I sometimes meet strangers to buy stuff off Facebook and wanted be to have some kind of protection.

I do feel safer when armed, (especially in cities), and don’t see a issue with it. DH carries also.

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 14/05/2018 18:09

Ah yes I love countries where I have I in 315 chance of dying thanks to a gun.
And as we know, there's been a barely any violence towards women thanks to gun ownership. Oh wait... eye roll. What an utterly ridiculous statement on every level.

ArcheryAnnie · 14/05/2018 18:07

I think a better argument would be to put your own house in order, whatnow123, and stop so many men hurting women.

WhereYouLeftIt · 14/05/2018 18:06

Ridiculous idea.

Teenagers going out with knives 'for protection' are more likely to be stabbed, and with their own knife. How would guns be any different? Women are physically weaker, would be easily disarmed by a stronger male.

How about, as a solution, violent men stop being such assholes and deal with their violence, instead of taking it out on other people? We fear the violence, and we fear men because they are violent. If the violence stopped, we'd have no reason to fear men.

tribpot · 14/05/2018 18:06

I thought this would be a thread applauding Michelle Obama. Now there is a woman with the right to bare arms.

Would a female-only gun policy improve safety? Very doubtful. Because gun ownership does not improve safety - see graph correlating gun ownership and gun death.

And if women were to bear arms, everyone knows they would get higher sentences if they did kill someone in self defence, whereas a man who rapes/murders would get a lesser sentence.

Go and use your time getting men to stop raping and killing women.

HotRocker · 14/05/2018 18:05

What a good idea, let’s reduce the level of violence in our society by carrying guns. Because it works in America doesn’t it…
How about instead of issuing women deadly firearms, men could stop being violent instead?

TERFragetteCity · 14/05/2018 18:03

Is it not just a few steps up from self defence training.

Why should I pay and take time out of my life to learn self defence training, when men could - you know - just stop raping and murdering women?

PurpleDaisies · 14/05/2018 18:03

Is it not just a few steps up from self defence training.

Of course it isn’t. Do you honestly think women walking round armed will help anything? It’s an absolutely ridiculous idea. Don’t you think men will take their guns?

whatnow123 · 14/05/2018 18:01

It is "bear arms". My mistake.

Best solution is for men to be less violent, I agree.

Reading a previous thread, a number of women mentioned a fear of men, based around their physical dominance. The idea that they couldn't defend themselves if attacked.

Is it not just a few steps up from self defence training.

It is the great equalizer

It makes everyone equally stupid

TheCrowFromBelow · 14/05/2018 18:00

I thought some bloke had turned up in a vest at your office to protest against a dress code eg sleeveless tops for women only.
Guns lead to more deaths. Telling women they should carry a gun to protect themselves is ignoring the fact that if men stopped being violent we wouldn’t need protecting as much.
Victim blaming, isn’t it?
Don’t fall for the NRA narrative.

Pratchet · 14/05/2018 17:59

Can we change the title! lol at cardi

Yes I think we should be allowed to carry weapons, a taser maybe.

Anlaf · 14/05/2018 17:59

I also thought this was a gripe about unfair office dress codes in summer.

This is a comically terrible idea, but one suggested to me when I chatted to a (male) friend about the street harassment I get. "You should just...shoot them" he said really helpfully and I guess dismissing the issue from any further thought
