Apparently gender-crit women are a cult who don't tolerate dissent.

Laurie, come over here and have a quick look through the threads. Then have a look at your own lot.

Then tell me again who is "cult-like".

Riot chic.

auntycartmanslargertesticle · 13/05/2018 03:39

Grifter is exactly the right word for her, Lengcleg. Shes on utube posing with antifa in Hyde Park. Total phony!

mancheeze · 11/05/2018 21:25

Penny is like a hangnail that refuses to peel off.

Ereshkigal · 11/05/2018 17:29

Yes I've heard that she has received a lot of abuse from men. I sympathise. No sympathy from her or her ilk for what gender critical women get though!

JoanSummers · 11/05/2018 17:21

I should probably also say that the abuse she writes of being subjected to there is disgusting. And it came from men.

I really, really resent that women speaking up for women are cast by Penny as committing equal or worse crimes when we name men as men.

JoanSummers · 11/05/2018 17:18

The article on Weev and Molly Crabapple? I know right??!

This is a piece that Penny published after her relationship with/support of Weev wad being publicly criticised:
laurie-penny.com/on-weev-fascism-and-the-free-internet/

Quote:
I believe that it is not too late to fight for the internet as a free and radical space – not just by opposing unjust laws, but by opposing those who use the web to attack minorities, women, LGBT people, anyone who dares not to be white, male and Anglo-Saxon [..]

I believe that keeping the internet free means keeping it free for everyone – and that’s why I will continue to stand for the rights of women, LGBT people and people of colour online and against censorship and surveillance.

So Penny makes her argument in that article that Weev and Julian Assange and anyone else should be free "to access information the state would rather they didn’t see or distribute."

She also writes:
There are some people out there within the net neutrality/digital security spectrum who seem to believe that ‘freedom’ really only means ‘freedom for people like me.’

I want to know if Penny is one of these people. Does she defend the right of radical feminists and other gender critics to access information about the trans lobby and trans activists, and to analyse, share and critique that information? Or are there special rules for women fighting for women's rights and liberation from male supremacy?

Ereshkigal · 11/05/2018 16:51

Wow Joan, that article.

womanformallyknownaswoman · 11/05/2018 16:33

I don’t think her mind is entirely closed to everything because of narcissism

well that's encouraging - I wonder whether time will tell or whether she can be peaked

JoanSummers · 11/05/2018 16:04

That article is absolutely right about Penny's circle of chums. OJ, Stavvers, Roz Kaveney, Molly Crabapple and Weev (holy crap, especially Weev) - this is an interesting article on those last two: medium.com/@furrygirl/the-definitive-explainer-on-molly-crabapple-her-ride-or-die-love-of-a-nazi-hacker-and-her-816946ab540d

LP was also close to Johann Hari and was still plugging his work as recently as this February. And, like him, she has been accused of fabricating parts of her work:
zetkin.net/journalism-subjectivity-movement/
www.thecommentator.com/article/1106/laurie_penny_johann_hari_s_final_victim

It is amazing to me how she seems to keep getting published unscathed by all this.

JoanSummers · 11/05/2018 15:35

Laurie would probably employ a female cleaner, then justify it as expanding job creation for women.

Penny did once advertise for a researcher who she offered less than minimum wage. Some info on that here:
She would pay 500 quid for 85 hours of work = comes to about 5.88 pounds an hour. Below the minimum wage. She also specifies preference for a female to do the job, in contravention of equality laws.

Just reading that article on Laurie Penny - what are all these references about people shouting 'scab'at women about? The author doesn't go any deeper so I assume it's a well known thing but not one I'd previously come across.

Offred · 11/05/2018 14:29

My point was broadly this;

  1. Yes, I think she is using her platform to say things I believe are harmful.
  1. I don’t think her mind is entirely closed to everything because of narcissism, based on my personal experience with her, unlike OJ who definitely has come across as narcissistic when I have been in his company.
womanformallyknownaswoman · 11/05/2018 14:12

Wow Amazing analysis of LP by Lisa Muggeridge, who I have a lot of time for. It reinforces my view of LP.

Excellent takedown by Lisa Ansell / Muggeridge.

sorry, not sorry, being a bit facetious HR Grin

HerFemaleness · 11/05/2018 10:16

Jesus, that tweet is pure unadulterated projection. Laurie, go clean your own house out before you try and tidy ours.

JoanSummers · 11/05/2018 10:02

Laurie Penny has her fans, that's for sure.

AngryAttackKittens · 11/05/2018 10:02

The thing is that from the perspective of the person or people harmed by the vulnerable person's actions their vulnerability doesn't make much difference, and shouldn't mean that they're allowed to continue harming others with impunity.

LangCleg · 11/05/2018 09:56

I had a trans activist have a go at me in real life, face to face, this week. I came away feeling like they were very emotionally and mentally fragile, and ever since then my anger has been tempered with the suspicion of that fragility.

You can be vulnerable and malicious or vulnerable and not malicious. One doesn't necessarily mean the other comes with it. But even vulnerable people who are not malicious can present as an increased risk to others - particularly when their vulnerabilities mean they cannot perceive the consent or boundaries of others as existing, let alone valid.

ArcheryAnnie · 11/05/2018 09:32

So from that I conclude she is a person.

Yes? Of course she's a person. All the people demanding we centre men are people. They are all capable of kindness when they feel like it. Some are centring men for malicious reasons, some are doing it because they are badly-informed, some are doing it because they think it's their own best chance of survival to be one of the Cool Girls, some are ideological zealots, etc etc.

I had a trans activist have a go at me in real life, face to face, this week. I came away feeling like they were very emotionally and mentally fragile, and ever since then my anger has been tempered with the suspicion of that fragility. I acknowledge that this trans activist who had a very unpleasant go at me is a person, and I am reacting accordingly. But even that fragility, that knowledge that they are a person, doesn't stop me being angry at their actions, too.

tl;dr of course Laurie Penny is a person. She's still talking bullshit, and is working directly against the interests of other women.

That thread Lang Grin

LangCleg · 11/05/2018 09:17

Also- while we're on this, someone tell me, what's a shorter non-essentialist way to refer to 'people who have a uterus and all that stuff'?

Yep, right up there with all the best feminist theorists! Not like all the raggedy, useless wannabes on FWR!

ArcheryAnnie · 11/05/2018 09:15

And pray, what has Laurie Penny done for feminism except for constantly demand that it centres men, dinosaursandtea?

OP posts:
Offred · 11/05/2018 09:14

LP is what she is. Much I disagree with her on re ideology. Same with OJ. However, LP contacted me personally and with empathy during the labour party’s recent woes and was very kind. She was the only person who understood and offered to write about my experience of being abused by people on ‘her side’ (not re trans). So from that I conclude she is a person. OJ who I have met in person IMO from that experience is entirely unable to engage with thought, he’s virtually robotic.

FermatsTheorem · 11/05/2018 09:12

"Laurie Penny has done more for feminism than you internet women who say things I don't like ever will."

Bit questionable, given that I know there are women on here who devote their RLs offline to working in DV shelters, trade union activism for women's rights, working with women who've exited prostitution.
